Being a cheetah, Ruby has a thin build and a long tail. She has a brown-red pelt and small, delicate paws. She is quite dexterous with her paws, which helps in her duties as a healer. Her spots are a light brown but in some light appear reddish like her pelt, due to her mutation. Despite being an adult now, she is rather short and has not outgrown her bright orange mane. Her size and mane lead many to believe she is still an apprentice, while others have said that perhaps she had found the fountain of youth and thus had been forced to stay young forever. Her eyes change color according to the season. In winter, they are blue like the icy mountains and crisp water. In spring, they bloom pink like the new blossoms. In summer they turn green like the lush grasses of the tundra. And in fall, they turn red and orange like the colors of the falling leaves. No one is sure why or how her eyes do this, and it remains quite a mystery. Since she doesn't see a lot of battle, she's gathered only a couple scars in her lifetime. The face scar was from a Bounty Hunter when she was a child. The neck scar is more recent, from a wolf. She prefers to hide them so they are oftentimes not visible.

PERSONALITY:

Gentle - Ruby is highly compassionate and is very gentle when it comes to the feelings of others. She knows that emotions can hurt as much as physical wounds, and so she tries to ensure that anyone in her care is as comfortable as possible. This means reassuring them, being there to listen to them if they need someone to talk to...really anything.

Clever - Ruby is quick on her feet, and clever in mind. Despite her small size, she is still rather fast, can still keep up with patrols with ease. (Although she may lag behind if she raced against other cheetahs.) Mentally-wise, she has a sharp mind and can almost always come up with a solution or way around a problem. It's her sharp mind and fast feet that often get her out of sticky situations. Surrounded by a pack of wolves? No problem. She'll bounce off that rock, climb that tree, and high tail it out of there before the dumb dogs know what happened.

Graceful - After years of her youth spent being a clutz, Ruby's learned how to conduct herself with quite a bit more grace. She's light on her feet, and as quiet as a mouse as well.

Dreamer - Ruby has always dreamed of serving her empire as a healer since she was young. When she has a dream, she follows it with all of her being. She has often been known to sit in a secluded place and look up at the stars. There, she wonders of what amazing things may lay beyond Ice Empire borders. She wonders what lay in the stars. She dreams of who her mate may one day be, what he might be like, and the possibilities that may lay in store if she ever found someone special.

Intuitive - Ruby is very attuned to the feelings and emotions of others. Perhaps it is a hyper-vigilant attention to detail that lets her read another's expressions and body language like a book, but she can usually always tell how someone is feeling. Because she is a healer, others often come to her to seek solace. This intuitiveness certainly helps Ruby to understand the feelings of others.

Determined - When she sets her mind on something, this girl doesn't give up. When others say its better to give up on a patient, Ruby will keep working to save them. If she needs to find someone or something, she'll cross borders to do it if she has to. Nothing stops her or dashes her hope!

Optimistic - Ruby likes to see the glass half full. By doing so, she stays happy and positive. She shares this joy with her empire mates to keep them happy and motivated. She hates feeling sad or down, and hates to see anyone else feel the same. She also has a strong faith in the empire's gods, which may attribute to her optimism.

Sassy - A trait picked up by her former mentor's personality, Ruby can be a bit sassy (even snappy at times), towards others. It's usually good natured, and if not, you're sure to know it. She's rarely snappy towards anyone undeserving, believing it wrong to strike the first blow...in terms of battle or of conversation.

BELIEF:
Although she admires all the empire gods for their respective qualities, she also sees each one as having a destructive side- even Glacio, guardian of Ice Empire, who brings the frost that brings cold and hunger.

She also believes greatly in the spirit of nature, and believes there must be an unknown god to represent it... Whoever that god may be, she favors them over all the others and almost primarily speaks to them when she feels the need.

QUIRKS, FEARS AND FLAWS:

-- When she has a lot on her mind, she goes to a secret place in Ice Empire territory to be by herself. She's only shown this place to one cat, Electra. Later, it was discovered also by a drunk Borealis.

-- During the few hot summer days, she doesn't mind going for short lake swims. She always stays near the shore, though, as she's afraid of lake monsters in the depths.

-- she likes to play fight and spar, and hopes to get better at fighting.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Tactics/Intelligence: Although combat tactics aren't her fortay, anything involving the operation of herbs and healing she is an expert on. She applies similar principles where applicable.
Endurance/Stamina: Not the greatest. As a cheetah she can only afford short bursts at max speed, followed by an even longer resting period. At a more casual pace, she can survive much longer without taking break.
Speed: Very fast, even for her size
Strength: Pretty lacking, as she's built for speed rather than fighting.
Defense: Thin, and fairly fragile in battle
Attack: Her attacking skills somewhat make up for her lack of strength; she uses fast movements to outpace opponents and leave them dizzy, and her long sharp claws certainly help to deal damage.

Health: Healthy but not impervious to colds; cheetahs aren't meant for chilly mountains
Agility: A long tail for balance coupled with natural flexibility makes Ruby very agile
Armor Defense: Current armor protects the back, sides, underbelly, and haunches mainly. Supplemental armor protects the legs but the rest is for looks.

When Ruby became an apprentice, she knew she wanted to train under Bird. Bird had taken care of her since she was a cub, and Ruby looked up to him as a sort of father figure. Despite his snappy personality, Ruby always loved him and always payed very close attention to his teachings. She even had to use the skills he taught her to take care of him once when he fell ill. Eventually, when Ruby graduated to full healer, Bird was lent to Fire Empire, to help train another healer apprentice who's mentor had died. But due to his good training of her, she was able to maintain the empire well in his absence.

[[ when snow melts ]]

A large dark cheetah, and one with fur as white as snow. The two felines met in one of the cities surrounding empire, and escaped their human bonds together. At first they had planned to join an empire. He wished to melt in with the Shadows. She wanted to blend in with the Ice. They planned to go their separate ways. But on their journey away from their former city, they fell in love. They knew they couldn't share a love while being from separate empires, so they decided to become nomads. They would take their chances living alone, and would search out their own territory to live and raise a family...After winter passed of course, and the world warmed to a decent temperature for travel. Until then, they planned to move from empire to empire, just to see if they both felt comfortable enough in one of them to stay.

However, not everything always goes according to plan. It was spring when the female found out she was pregnant. The father-to-be thought they should leave the empires before they were born but...they did not leave as soon as they hoped. The two had been traveling through the mountains of Ice Empire, on their way to the outer-most border when she came into labor. The father raced to find a patrol, and they helped the mother back to the empire.

Once there, the empire's healer, Bird, helped to deliver the mother's cubs. The last of the cubs was small and frail. The parents decided to name her Rubiria, or Ruby for short, because of her red/orange fur. (Her fur color later changed to a reddish brown). They knew the smallest cub was far too weak to leave with them, and so once the cubs were old enough to walk, the two nomadic cheetahs left Ice Empire with their cubs, leaving Ruby behind in Bird's care. It is unknown if they kept the other cubs with them after they left or if they gave them away to other empires.

Bird was a cranky jagarundi who didn't appreciate a cub being dumped on him. But he didn't have much choice, since the queens couldn't do it and Ruby was small and needed constant care to ensure her survival. Ruby did not remember her real parents, and so she grew to love the red feline as her father. She paid close attention to what was given to her to help her grow stronger, and even more attention to what was given to others to help mend their wounds. It seemed magical and wonderful, that a feline could hold so much knowledge as to know what combinations of poultices were needed to heal what aliments. Ruby wanted to be just like him. Sometimes though, his snarky personality would hurt Ruby's cub feelings. Whenever she was like this, Nedria was usually never far to give Ruby a hug and a shoulder to cry into. Ruby sees Nedria like a mom.

And eventually she grew from cub to apprentice. At one year and 2 months of age, Ruby participated in a rescue-raid on the Bounty Hunters of Massilia, in an attempt to take one of their members, Mountain, back. The patrol succeeded, but Ruby had been hurt during the raid. And again, she was back in the healer's den, much to her relief. She always knew she'd be no good as a gladiator. So once her wounds had healed, Ruby asked Nedria if she could train under Bird instead. Her wish was granted. Ruby already knew most of the herbs and things, and she was amazed that Bird had even more to teach. At one point during her training however, things became increasingly stressful. Bird's pressure to learn everything coupled with overwhelming amounts of work frightened the young cheetah, and after notifying Nedria, Ruby left the empire for a brief time. During this half year, Rubiria lived on her own in the wilds of Ice Empire territory. Her sharp sense of smell and quick feet gave her means to hunt and evade predators and Hunters alike, and the calm of the quiet wild soothed her. She became like a druid, one with nature and nature with her. She studied the plants that grew in the wild, and learned how to plant and nurture them. By the time she was ready to return home, she had created hidden gardens within Ice Empire's borders in which to grow and harvest certain herbs.

After a year and a half of training, Rubiria became a full healer on her third birthday.

Not long after Ruby's graduation to full healer, another healer in Fire Empire died. Named Claudius, Ruby had met him a few times but had not known the skiddish lynx well. He had left behind an untrained apprentice named Kinza, whom Ruby had become good friends with. And since Bird was finished training Ruby, Nedria decided to lend Bird to Fire Empire, in order for him to finish Kinza's training. Ruby found it hard to deal with everything on her own without his assistance, but she managed. For that time being, the only time she was able to see her former mentor was at Gatherings, which are held every season. Sometimes he was too busy to even go to those.

About a year later, Ruby was overjoyed when she learned at a Gathering that Kinza was becoming a full healer, and that Bird could return to Ice Empire. She waited patiently and excitedly the next day, waiting for him to arrive. The day had show flurries on and off, and once they eased off, Ruby and a small group of gladiators set out to forage for plants and such before Bird arrived. Somewhere along the line though, they picked up the scent of blood, and the group found upturned snow smelling of gladiators Alcer and Donovan, but they were no where to be found. What seemed even worse than that though, was the bloody heap of fur they found lying unconscious in the snow not terribly far from there. It was Bird. He was heavily wounded and smelled of Bounty Hunters. Ruby was terrified and hysterical at first; she thought he was dead. But once she noticed his side rise and felt his pulse, she knew there was hope. She had her gladiator companions assist her in carrying him carefully back to camp where she brought him into her den. By that time, most of the empire knew what was going on and were all concerned for the healer, wishing to see him. Perhaps a trait she learned from her mentor, Ruby snapped harshly at them, telling them to back off and leave her be so she could work in peace. Surprised by the soft cheetah's outburst, they retreated, and the healer went to work.

After hours of careful and strategic work, much rest, and careful watch, Bird began to recover from his injuries, albeit slowly. Although his life could be saved, it came as a price. With a crippled leg, he wouldn't be able to heal again. At least not to the extent he once could. Once he was a decent way through his recovery, he decided to retire from healer duties permanently. Ruby didn't mind; she was just glad that he lived through his experience.

But the fact of the matter was, Bounty Hunters. They took her friend Donovan and nearly killed the only father she'd ever had. Her worry for her empiremates' safety became a furious protectiveness, and she decided it was time she really started to learn all the ins and outs of battle- even if it hadn't turned out so well the first time. She began to train with Silver Gladiator, Zireena, and Zireena's apprentice, Ruka. Occasionally she would also meet with Sugarra, the healer of Lightning Empire, who would teach her some good fighting moves. Sugarra proved to be the best teacher, for the healers already shared similar ways of thinking.

Her battle training couldn't have come with any better timing. An emergency gathering was called that winter, and Evander presented a dangerous idea to the other empires. A war was to begin, and Evander wanted all of the empires' support to send the Hunters a message. They wished to launch a huge-scale attack on the City to release not only their own felines, but also other trapped cats. Tempestas agreed to lend his support. Avita stated she could not, because she was with cubs and wished not to risk their safety; not to mention she had only recently escaped from having been captured. Ruby's leader, Ceres, could not attend this gathering, and in her stead stood Zireena. But Ruby's combat coach insisted it was not her choice to make, and also refused. Ruby was both relieved and disappointed; she wanted to participate, and help the empires any way she could to teach the Hunters a lesson but...she also had a new apprentice that needed her. She heard Andromeda also mention that Fire and Shadow Empire would be joining training forces in order to create a team of gladiators trained to kill. The idea made the healer uneasy, but it also interested her. Although she didn't want to need to kill, having that kind of lethal training would be important for defending yourself and your empiremates... After all, what could one do when faced with an impossible enemy or predator whose only goal is to slaughter you? Or worse, take you back to a terrible place where you are forced to shed more blood? Innocent blood? She hated the idea of taking lives when her job was to save them, but she begrudgingly knew sometimes it might to be done in order to protect your empire.

Too quickly, it seemed, the dreary day for the mega raid arrived. Ruby was stationed at an outpost in Shadow Empire territory, awaiting wounded gladiators to return so she could mend their wounds. Blacksmiths stood by to fix their damaged armor. While she arranged her herbs and awaited the first bloodied souls to rush back in, a friend of hers prepared to leave. His name was Borealis, a handsome lynx from her empire. He was often in and out of her den for some reason or other, but one evening more recently they had had a closer encounter, and Ruby wasn't sure how she felt about him. He made her uncomfortable and made her heart flutter at the same time. He was flirty, and she didn't want to give in to his antics, but no one had ever paid her such attention before. She was afraid for him though; he'd be going off to fight, and the prospect of him not coming back...frightened her. She approached to speak to him, but before she reached him, a female cat from another empire greeted him and whisked him away. Disheartened, Ruby returned to her herbs, not seeing Borealis glance after her sadly as he prepared to leave.

Ruby had pushed the feelings away by the time another event caught her attention. An apprentice from Fire Empire burst into the outpost, hysterical. She reported that Bounty Hunters had attacked the Fire Empire camp, and that there were many injuries, cubs among them. Furious and bursting with determination to help, Rubiria volunteered to go. With a gladiator named Gray to help as a guard, the two took off for the other camp. They found it alive with battle. Gray acted as a distraction to allow Ruby inside the camp to find the wounded. She found the cubs inside the leader's den. One, named Antares, had a deep gash down her shoulder. Ruby feared it might leave a permanent limp. The other, a tiger cub, had an odd paw that Ruby wasn't sure how to fix. The cheetah stayed in the Fire Empire camp for the duration of the battle and into the next day until the leader with her fighting party arrived. She had done all she could for the wounded cats, but not all could be saved. Although she told Ruby that she owed her for saving her daughter's life, Andromeda was distraught by the losses dealt to her empire, and her wails of agony haunted Rubiria from that day on.

A broken heart was something she had never learned to fix.

Recovering from the raid turned war was a long process. Some were ready to go out at once and fight again, while the Hunters were still building up their strength again. Others were hurt more deeply, and needed their own time to heal their bodies and minds. Every Empire had felt the effect of long battle. Every cat knew someone who had been lost. For healers, the work was almost overwhelming.

One night, Ruby went out to gather herbs while they were crisp and cool. There, she ran into her friend Rue. They talked for a short while about recent goings on, then decided to go on a hunt. They had pulled down a good sized elk when a pack of hungry wolves surrounded them in an attempt to steal their kill. Ruby, with her poor night vision, had to rely mostly on scent and Rue's cues. They were vastly outnumbered, but the two stuck by their kill; their empire needed it. A wolf leaped on Ruby before she could evade, pinning her down and tearing at her throat. It didn't manage to do serious damage before the weight was lifted by another cat slamming into the wolf and fighting it off. Rubiria couldn't scent who it was through the blood. As the tides turned and the wolves fled, the three gave chase after their kill that had been dragged away during the battle distraction. They caught up at the treeline, where Rubiria realized the other cat was none other than Andromeda, Fire Empire's leader. She forced the alpha wolf into retreat, and the rest of the pack followed. The leader reported that she had heard the sounds of a fight from across the border and had come to help, and would return back to her empire now that the threat had passed. All there were wounded and would need to get back to their respective camps. They thanked the leader, and Ruby told Andromeda that the debt was repaid, a notion that she was sure the leader would appreciate. The two best friends struggled home together and upon their return sent gladiators to fetch their kill while they mended their wounds. Although she did her best, Ruby wasn't used to applying medicine to herself, and was left with a scar on her throat. She often wears a scarf to hide it.

Around the same time, Borealis went missing. The two had become increasingly close, which made it an even harder thing for Ruby to hear. It was reported that he had been hunting near a river when he must have been swept away. Pieces of his armor were found near the banks. Ruby kept his leg armor close to her, knowing how important they had been to him. Eventually, she began to wear them in his honor, and promised she would never forget him. Privately, she hasn't given up hope that one day he would return.

Ruby was right not to doubt that Borealis would one day return. Although a lonely year passed since he vanished, Ruby did her best to keep her head up. She even helped one of her empiremates climb out of a deep cassavas where he was stranded in the winter! Everything was forgotten when she laid eyes on Borealis again as he padded into camp wearing new armor. Once they had the chance to talk in private, the two laid out their hearts right then and there, and agreed to be mates. They were near inseparable, and meshed well, despite Borealis' almost constant doubt and uncertainty. He was always stuck in the memories of things he had done, and it seemed impossible for him to leave the guilt behind. Ruby did her best to reassure him that it didn't matter anymore.

Then one day, Ruby realized she was pregnant! It was the happiest and most exciting realization of her life, and telling Borealis was even more wonderful. A few months later on November 28th, four healthy cubs were born to the reunited couple. The proud parents named them after herbs and medicinal plants: Aloe, Marigold, Rosalie, and Chamomile.

Ruby's newest armor combines lightweight, flexible materials, with style and functionality. Around her midsection is leather armor with plenty of pouches for collecting and transporting herbs. On her rear, above her tail is a lightweight sheet of metal armor. Beneath it and hanging from her belly is scale mail. Her rear legs have small armor plates for protecting her knees, and her front has leather/fabric leg covers with small leather bands. They used to belong to Borealis, as did the sash that she wears around her waist. On her lower paws are silver anklets, each sporting a small ruby. They match the decorative ones on her tail. Additional lightweight fabric hangs for no reason other than fashion, with small beads dangling from some places.

She still owns the dove feather that she wears behind her ear. She replaces it with a new one when it breaks or becomes to ragged. Sometimes, a parrot feather that belonged to her former mentor will join it, but she doesn't always wear it in fear of it getting lost or broken.

Ruby also owns a gold necklace with a larger ruby in the center of the pedant. This was given to her by her parents before they left the empire.

Now that she is training as a gladiator as well as being a healer, she finally decided to have armor made for her. She still owns the red scarf and under it, her old red collar, although she never wears one without the other. She doesn't care much for the collar and would be willing to trade it for something else. She still has her dove feather as well, which is never removed. The plates on her armor are all thickly layered leathers, shaped in such a way as to not limit movement or flexibility, so she is still able to run her fastest without it inhibiting her. The plates are held in place with leather straps that are colored blue, for her empire, while the shape and color of the plates are to represent her; as are the rubies on the armor. Obviously. Not pictured, she also owns a red belt with pouches on either side for herb collecting. She no longer wears the metal cuffs she used to have, and may have either given them to the forge or has them in storage somewhere.

Although she may be beginning to rethink it, Ruby has never really worn much armor. Reason being, she would rather see the materials go towards the fighting force of the empire, who she feels need it more. But, Ruby has thin fur and having armor would help keep her warm. Plus, since she isn't much of a fighter, she would need the extra protection perhaps even more than the gladiators, as without it she's a sitting duck. For now, her only worn items include a red collar which is worn under a fluffy red scarf. She has two small silver-metal cuffs with rubies decorating the center (a commonly seen decorative armor), and for now, two tail rings decorated with small rubies. She also wears a dove feather behind an ear, as a symbol of peace and sign that she is a healer.

She isn't the most sought after healer, seeing as she is fairly unknown by today's Bounty Hunters and has done nothing against them. (No living BHs remember the small raid Ice Empire laid on them in order to free Mountain...even if they did, Ruby didn't play a huge part in it so she would have been no big deal to them.) However, she is more valuable than, say, a regular gladiator. Since she holds her rank, Hunters may want to catch her in hopes of weakening the empire by taking away their source of healing.
If nothing else, the rubies on her armor have at least some worth.

Being a cheetah, Ruby has a thin build and a long tail. She has a brown-red pelt and small, delicate paws. She is quite dexterous with her paws, which helps in her duties as a healer. Her spots are a light brown but in some light appear reddish like her pelt, due to her mutation. Despite being an adult now, she is rather short and has not outgrown her bright orange mane. Her size and mane lead many to believe she is still an apprentice, while others have said that perhaps she had found the fountain of youth and thus had been forced to stay young forever. Her eyes change color according to the season. In winter, they are blue like the icy mountains and crisp water. In spring, they bloom pink like the new blossoms. In summer they turn green like the lush grasses of the tundra. And in fall, they turn red and orange like the colors of the falling leaves. No one is sure why or how her eyes do this, and it remains quite a mystery. Since she doesn't see a lot of battle, she's gathered only a couple scars in her lifetime. The face scar was from a Bounty Hunter when she was a child. The neck scar is more recent, from a wolf. She prefers to hide them so they are oftentimes not visible.

Gentle - Ruby is highly compassionate and is very gentle when it comes to the feelings of others. She knows that emotions can hurt as much as physical wounds, and so she tries to ensure that anyone in her care is as comfortable as possible. This means reassuring them, being there to listen to them if they need someone to talk to...really anything.

Clever - Ruby is quick on her feet, and clever in mind. Despite her small size, she is still rather fast, can still keep up with patrols with ease. (Although she may lag behind if she raced against other cheetahs.) Mentally-wise, she has a sharp mind and can almost always come up with a solution or way around a problem. It's her sharp mind and fast feet that often get her out of sticky situations. Surrounded by a pack of wolves? No problem. She'll bounce off that rock, climb that tree, and high tail it out of there before the dumb dogs know what happened.

Graceful - After years of her youth spent being a clutz, Ruby's learned how to conduct herself with quite a bit more grace. She's light on her feet, and as quiet as a mouse as well.

Dreamer - Ruby has always dreamed of serving her empire as a healer since she was young. When she has a dream, she follows it with all of her being. She has often been known to sit in a secluded place and look up at the stars. There, she wonders of what amazing things may lay beyond Ice Empire borders. She wonders what lay in the stars. She dreams of who her mate may one day be, what he might be like, and the possibilities that may lay in store if she ever found someone special.

Intuitive - Ruby is very attuned to the feelings and emotions of others. Perhaps it is a hyper-vigilant attention to detail that lets her read another's expressions and body language like a book, but she can usually always tell how someone is feeling. Because she is a healer, others often come to her to seek solace. This intuitiveness certainly helps Ruby to understand the feelings of others.

Determined - When she sets her mind on something, this girl doesn't give up. When others say its better to give up on a patient, Ruby will keep working to save them. If she needs to find someone or something, she'll cross borders to do it if she has to. Nothing stops her or dashes her hope!

Optimistic - Ruby likes to see the glass half full. By doing so, she stays happy and positive. She shares this joy with her empire mates to keep them happy and motivated. She hates feeling sad or down, and hates to see anyone else feel the same. She also has a strong faith in the empire's gods, which may attribute to her optimism.

Sassy - A trait picked up by her former mentor's personality, Ruby can be a bit sassy (even snappy at times), towards others. It's usually good natured, and if not, you're sure to know it. Although she admires all the empire gods for their respective qualities, she also sees each one as having a destructive side- even Glacio, guardian of Ice Empire, who brings the frost that brings cold and hunger.

She also believes greatly in the spirit of nature, and believes there must be an unknown god to represent it... Whoever that god may be, she favors them over all the others and almost primarily speaks to them when she feels the need.

-- When she has a lot on her mind, she goes to a secret place in Ice Empire territory to be by herself. She's only shown this place to one cat, Electra. Later, it was discovered also by a drunk Borealis.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Tactics/Intelligence: Although combat tactics aren't her fortay, anything involving the operation of herbs and healing she is an expert on. She applies similar principles where applicable.
Endurance/Stamina: Not the greatest. As a cheetah she can only afford short bursts at max speed, followed by an even longer resting period. At a more casual pace, she can survive much longer without taking break.
Speed: Very fast, even for her size
Strength: Pretty lacking, as she's built for speed rather than fighting.
Defense: Thin, and fairly fragile in battle
Attack: Her attacking skills somewhat make up for her lack of strength; she uses fast movements to outpace opponents and leave them dizzy, and her long sharp claws certainly help to deal damage.

When Ruby became an apprentice, she knew she wanted to train under Bird. Bird had taken care of her since she was a cub, and Ruby looked up to him as a sort of father figure. Despite his snappy personality, Ruby always loved him and always payed very close attention to his teachings. She even had to use the skills he taught her to take care of him once when he fell ill. Eventually, when Ruby graduated to full healer, Bird was lent to Fire Empire, to help train another healer apprentice who's mentor had died. But due to his good training of her, she was able to maintain the empire well in his absence.

A large dark cheetah, and one with fur as white as snow. The two felines met in one of the cities surrounding empire, and escaped their human bonds together. At first they had planned to join an empire. He wished to melt in with the Shadows. She wanted to blend in with the Ice. They planned to go their separate ways. But on their journey away from their former city, they fell in love. They knew they couldn't share a love while being from separate empires, so they decided to become nomads. They would take their chances living alone, and would search out their own territory to live and raise a family...After winter passed of course, and the world warmed to a decent temperature for travel. Until then, they planned to move from empire to empire, just to see if they both felt comfortable enough in one of them to stay.

However, not everything always goes according to plan. It was spring when the female found out she was pregnant. The father-to-be thought they should leave the empires before they were born but...they did not leave as soon as they hoped. The two had been traveling through the mountains of Ice Empire, on their way to the outer-most border when she came into labor. The father raced to find a patrol, and they helped the mother back to the empire.

Once there, the empire's healer, Bird, helped to deliver the mother's cubs. The last of the cubs was small and frail. The parents decided to name her Rubiria, or Ruby for short, because of her red/orange fur. (Her fur color later changed to a reddish brown). They knew the smallest cub was far too weak to leave with them, and so once the cubs were old enough to walk, the two nomadic cheetahs left Ice Empire with their cubs, leaving Ruby behind in Bird's care. It is unknown if they kept the other cubs with them after they left or if they gave them away to other empires.

Bird was a cranky jagarundi who didn't appreciate a cub being dumped on him. But he didn't have much choice, since the queens couldn't do it and Ruby was small and needed constant care to ensure her survival. Ruby did not remember her real parents, and so she grew to love the red feline as her father. She paid close attention to what was given to her to help her grow stronger, and even more attention to what was given to others to help mend their wounds. It seemed magical and wonderful, that a feline could hold so much knowledge as to know what combinations of poultices were needed to heal what aliments. Ruby wanted to be just like him. Sometimes though, his snarky personality would hurt Ruby's cub feelings. Whenever she was like this, Nedria was usually never far to give Ruby a hug and a shoulder to cry into. Ruby sees Nedria like a mom.

And eventually she grew from cub to apprentice. At one year and 2 months of age, Ruby participated in a rescue-raid on the Bounty Hunters of Massilia, in an attempt to take one of their members, Mountain, back. The patrol succeeded, but Ruby had been hurt during the raid. And again, she was back in the healer's den, much to her relief. She always knew she'd be no good as a gladiator. So once her wounds had healed, Ruby asked Nedria if she could train under Bird instead. Her wish was granted. Ruby already knew most of the herbs and things, and she was amazed that Bird had even more to teach. At one point during her training however, things became increasingly stressful. Bird's pressure to learn everything coupled with overwhelming amounts of work frightened the young cheetah, and after notifying Nedria, Ruby left the empire for a brief time. During this half year, Rubiria lived on her own in the wilds of Ice Empire territory. Her sharp sense of smell and quick feet gave her means to hunt and evade predators and Hunters alike, and the calm of the quiet wild soothed her. She became like a druid, one with nature and nature with her. She studied the plants that grew in the wild, and learned how to plant and nurture them. By the time she was ready to return home, she had created hidden gardens within Ice Empire's borders in which to grow and harvest certain herbs.

After a year and a half of training, Rubiria became a full healer on her third birthday.

Not long after Ruby's graduation to full healer, another healer in Fire Empire died. Named Claudius, Ruby had met him a few times but had not known the skiddish lynx well. He had left behind an untrained apprentice named Kinza, whom Ruby had become good friends with. And since Bird was finished training Ruby, Nedria decided to lend Bird to Fire Empire, in order for him to finish Kinza's training. Ruby found it hard to deal with everything on her own without his assistance, but she managed. For that time being, the only time she was able to see her former mentor was at Gatherings, which are held every season. Sometimes he was too busy to even go to those.

About a year later, Ruby was overjoyed when she learned at a Gathering that Kinza was becoming a full healer, and that Bird could return to Ice Empire. She waited patiently and excitedly the next day, waiting for him to arrive. The day had show flurries on and off, and once they eased off, Ruby and a small group of gladiators set out to forage for plants and such before Bird arrived. Somewhere along the line though, they picked up the scent of blood, and the group found upturned snow smelling of gladiators Alcer and Donovan, but they were no where to be found. What seemed even worse than that though, was the bloody heap of fur they found lying unconscious in the snow not terribly far from there. It was Bird. He was heavily wounded and smelled of Bounty Hunters. Ruby was terrified and hysterical at first; she thought he was dead. But once she noticed his side rise and felt his pulse, she knew there was hope. She had her gladiator companions assist her in carrying him carefully back to camp where she brought him into her den. By that time, most of the empire knew what was going on and were all concerned for the healer, wishing to see him. Perhaps a trait she learned from her mentor, Ruby snapped harshly at them, telling them to back off and leave her be so she could work in peace. Surprised by the soft cheetah's outburst, they retreated, and the healer went to work.

After hours of careful and strategic work, much rest, and careful watch, Bird began to recover from his injuries, albeit slowly. Although his life could be saved, it came as a price. With a crippled leg, he wouldn't be able to heal again. At least not to the extent he once could. Once he was a decent way through his recovery, he decided to retire from healer duties permanently. Ruby didn't mind; she was just glad that he lived through his experience.

But the fact of the matter was, Bounty Hunters. They took her friend Donovan and nearly killed the only father she'd ever had. Her worry for her empiremates' safety became a furious protectiveness, and she decided it was time she really started to learn all the ins and outs of battle- even if it hadn't turned out so well the first time. She began to train with Silver Gladiator, Zireena, and Zireena's apprentice, Ruka. Occasionally she would also meet with Sugarra, the healer of Lightning Empire, who would teach her some good fighting moves. Sugarra proved to be the best teacher, for the healers already shared similar ways of thinking.

Her battle training couldn't have come with any better timing. An emergency gathering was called that winter, and Evander presented a dangerous idea to the other empires. A war was to begin, and Evander wanted all of the empires' support to send the Hunters a message. They wished to launch a huge-scale attack on the City to release not only their own felines, but also other trapped cats. Tempestas agreed to lend his support. Avita stated she could not, because she was with cubs and wished not to risk their safety; not to mention she had only recently escaped from having been captured. Ruby's leader, Ceres, could not attend this gathering, and in her stead stood Zireena. But Ruby's combat coach insisted it was not her choice to make, and also refused. Ruby was both relieved and disappointed; she wanted to participate, and help the empires any way she could to teach the Hunters a lesson but...she also had a new apprentice that needed her. She heard Andromeda also mention that Fire and Shadow Empire would be joining training forces in order to create a team of gladiators trained to kill. The idea made the healer uneasy, but it also interested her. Although she didn't want to need to kill, having that kind of lethal training would be important for defending yourself and your empiremates... After all, what could one do when faced with an impossible enemy or predator whose only goal is to slaughter you? Or worse, take you back to a terrible place where you are forced to shed more blood? Innocent blood? She hated the idea of taking lives when her job was to save them, but she begrudgingly knew sometimes it might to be done in order to protect your empire.

Too quickly, it seemed, the dreary day for the mega raid arrived. Ruby was stationed at an outpost in Shadow Empire territory, awaiting wounded gladiators to return so she could mend their wounds. Blacksmiths stood by to fix their damaged armor. While she arranged her herbs and awaited the first bloodied souls to rush back in, a friend of hers prepared to leave. His name was Borealis, a handsome lynx from her empire. He was often in and out of her den for some reason or other, but one evening more recently they had had a closer encounter, and Ruby wasn't sure how she felt about him. He made her uncomfortable and made her heart flutter at the same time. He was flirty, and she didn't want to give in to his antics, but no one had ever paid her such attention before. She was afraid for him though; he'd be going off to fight, and the prospect of him not coming back...frightened her. She approached to speak to him, but before she reached him, a female cat from another empire greeted him and whisked him away. Disheartened, Ruby returned to her herbs, not seeing Borealis glance after her sadly as he prepared to leave.

Ruby had pushed the feelings away by the time another event caught her attention. An apprentice from Fire Empire burst into the outpost, hysterical. She reported that Bounty Hunters had attacked the Fire Empire camp, and that there were many injuries, cubs among them. Furious and bursting with determination to help, Rubiria volunteered to go. With a gladiator named Gray to help as a guard, the two took off for the other camp. They found it alive with battle. Gray acted as a distraction to allow Ruby inside the camp to find the wounded. She found the cubs inside the leader's den. One, named Antares, had a deep gash down her shoulder. Ruby feared it might leave a permanent limp. The other, a tiger cub, had an odd paw that Ruby wasn't sure how to fix. The cheetah stayed in the Fire Empire camp for the duration of the battle and into the next day until the leader with her fighting party arrived. She had done all she could for the wounded cats, but not all could be saved. Although she told Ruby that she owed her for saving her daughter's life, Andromeda was distraught by the losses dealt to her empire, and her wails of agony haunted Rubiria from that day on.

A broken heart was something she had never learned to fix.

Recovering from the raid turned war was a long process. Some were ready to go out at once and fight again, while the Hunters were still building up their strength again. Others were hurt more deeply, and needed their own time to heal their bodies and minds. Every Empire had felt the effect of long battle. Every cat knew someone who had been lost. For healers, the work was almost overwhelming.

One night, Ruby went out to gather herbs while they were crisp and cool. There, she ran into her friend Rue. They talked for a short while about recent goings on, then decided to go on a hunt. They had pulled down a good sized elk when a pack of hungry wolves surrounded them in an attempt to steal their kill. Ruby, with her poor night vision, had to rely mostly on scent and Rue's cues. They were vastly outnumbered, but the two stuck by their kill; their empire needed it. A wolf leaped on Ruby before she could evade, pinning her down and tearing at her throat. It didn't manage to do serious damage before the weight was lifted by another cat slamming into the wolf and fighting it off. Rubiria couldn't scent who it was through the blood. As the tides turned and the wolves fled, the three gave chase after their kill that had been dragged away during the battle distraction. They caught up at the treeline, where Rubiria realized the other cat was none other than Andromeda, Fire Empire's leader. She forced the alpha wolf into retreat, and the rest of the pack followed. The leader reported that she had heard the sounds of a fight from across the border and had come to help, and would return back to her empire now that the threat had passed. All there were wounded and would need to get back to their respective camps. They thanked the leader, and Ruby told Andromeda that the debt was repaid, a notion that she was sure the leader would appreciate. The two best friends struggled home together and upon their return sent gladiators to fetch their kill while they mended their wounds. Although she did her best, Ruby wasn't used to applying medicine to herself, and was left with a scar on her throat. She often wears a scarf to hide it.

Around the same time, Borealis went missing. The two had become increasingly close, which made it an even harder thing for Ruby to hear. It was reported that he had been hunting near a river when he must have been swept away. Pieces of his armor were found near the banks. Ruby kept his leg armor close to her, knowing how important they had been to him. Eventually, she began to wear them in his honor, and promised she would never forget him. Privately, she hasn't given up hope that one day he would return.

Ruby was right not to doubt that Borealis would one day return. Although a lonely year passed since he vanished, Ruby did her best to keep her head up. She even helped one of her empiremates climb out of a deep cassavas where he was stranded in the winter! Everything was forgotten when she laid eyes on Borealis again as he padded into camp wearing new armor. Once they had the chance to talk in private, the two laid out their hearts right then and there, and agreed to be mates. They were near inseparable, and meshed well, despite Borealis' almost constant doubt and uncertainty. He was always stuck in the memories of things he had done, and it seemed impossible for him to leave the guilt behind. Ruby did her best to reassure him that it didn't matter anymore.

Then one day, Ruby realized she was pregnant! It was the happiest and most exciting realization of her life, and telling Borealis was even more wonderful. A few months later on November 28th, four healthy cubs were born to the reunited couple. The proud parents named them after herbs and medicinal plants: Aloe, Marigold, Rosalie, and Chamomile.

Ruby's newest armor combines lightweight, flexible materials, with style and functionality. Around her midsection is leather armor with plenty of pouches for collecting and transporting herbs. On her rear, above her tail is a lightweight sheet of metal armor. Beneath it and hanging from her belly is scale mail. Her rear legs have small armor plates for protecting her knees, and her front has leather/fabric leg covers with small leather bands. They used to belong to Borealis, as did the sash that she wears around her waist. On her lower paws are silver anklets, each sporting a small ruby. They match the decorative ones on her tail. Additional lightweight fabric hangs for no reason other than fashion, with small beads dangling from some places.

She still owns the dove feather that she wears behind her ear. She replaces it with a new one when it breaks or becomes to ragged. Sometimes, a parrot feather that belonged to her former mentor will join it, but she doesn't always wear it in fear of it getting lost or broken.

Ruby also owns a gold necklace with a larger ruby in the center of the pedant. This was given to her by her parents before they left the empire.

Now that she is training as a gladiator as well as being a healer, she finally decided to have armor made for her. She still owns the red scarf and under it, her old red collar, although she never wears one without the other. She doesn't care much for the collar and would be willing to trade it for something else. She still has her dove feather as well, which is never removed. The plates on her armor are all thickly layered leathers, shaped in such a way as to not limit movement or flexibility, so she is still able to run her fastest without it inhibiting her. The plates are held in place with leather straps that are colored blue, for her empire, while the shape and color of the plates are to represent her; as are the rubies on the armor. Obviously. Not pictured, she also owns a red belt with pouches on either side for herb collecting. She no longer wears the metal cuffs she used to have, and may have either given them to the forge or has them in storage somewhere.

Although she may be beginning to rethink it, Ruby has never really worn much armor. Reason being, she would rather see the materials go towards the fighting force of the empire, who she feels need it more. But, Ruby has thin fur and having armor would help keep her warm. Plus, since she isn't much of a fighter, she would need the extra protection perhaps even more than the gladiators, as without it she's a sitting duck. For now, her only worn items include a red collar which is worn under a fluffy red scarf. She has two small silver-metal cuffs with rubies decorating the center (a commonly seen decorative armor), and for now, two tail rings decorated with small rubies. She also wears a dove feather behind an ear, as a symbol of peace and sign that she is a healer.

She isn't the most sought after healer, seeing as she is fairly unknown by today's Bounty Hunters and has done nothing against them. (No living BHs remember the small raid Ice Empire laid on them in order to free Mountain...even if they did, Ruby didn't play a huge part in it so she would have been no big deal to them.) However, she is more valuable than, say, a regular gladiator. Since she holds her rank, Hunters may want to catch her in hopes of weakening the empire by taking away their source of healing.
If nothing else, the rubies on her armor have at least some worth.
