Description
Gaea, (Ge) Daughter/Creation of Khaos and companion of Ouranos. Goddess of the element and planet Earth. Mother of Mothers. Mother of the gods. Goddess of ,nature, fertility, all flora, fauna and humanity. The first goddess to take the attribute of childbirth and the care and protection of children. Also admired as a goddess of strength, stability and nobility.

Like Ouranos, not a lot of depictions still exist of Gaea. But there is more than her consort. So, I was better able to piece together this rendition. I have always seen Gaea as a motherly figure, and I added a fuller face and some gray streaks to her hair to emphasize her high status on the Family Tree. Her crown I took from one of the few images of her on pottery. The detail of her dress and himation comes from another ceramic fragment, from a private collection in Germany. The staff comes from yet another pottery depiction. Instead of going with the usual bundles of fruits and plants, I went with her motherly nature, placing a baby in her arms as a reminder that we are all her creation. The back shield however clearly depicts her vegetation attribute with Acanthus and lilies.
