ahh those troublesome animations! I know I always struggled with them, and somehow taught myself... hope this helps someone!
*this is with PSE 9, I don't remember how to use gimp, so sorry!*

How to animate a bounce (heart/etc)
1: Open what you want to animate.
2: create a new layer and draw in what you'd like to bounce.

3: duplicate that layer, and title it "up".
4: Move ONE of those layers up. (take the little heart etc, and move it up a little!)

5: duplicate your base layer. (the one that you first opened.)
6: title one of the base layers up and one down.

7: NOW. Merge the up base layer with the layer you drew in that you wanted to bounce.
8: Do the same with both layers that you titled down!

9: You should be done. Look at the steps in the tutorial for the rest. (save for web etc)

How to make your icon bounce:
1: Open your file
2: Duplicate the layer, and title it up.
3: Move that layer up.
You should have two layers.
Save for web!
