Part III: [link]LAST INSTALLMENT!
I'm gonna be honest! I'm really torn between being happy that I finished this and being really sad that I'm probably going to have to go back and do a lot of edits for continuity and general reworking of bad drawings!
I mean there's definitely at least one set-up where the ground plane is like "lol bbiab"
So it's pretty embarrassing that this took so long to finish! My defense is that I thumbnailed it when I had a lot of free time and then school started so I ended up using this mostly as a warm-up before starting homework. D:
EDIT: There's a dumb little musical reference in the dialogue, did anyone catch it? XD I'm not sure how many people have seen this particular musical (hint: it's not a Jekyll and Hyde reference)
----------------------------------------------------
WARNING: This final section is kind of TL;DR territory.
This section has very little action and a lot of talking and is mostly Frankenstein riding through his hopefully not too contrived character arc.
Right now it seems intrinsic to his personality that he does not become introspective unless he is severely injured and/or bedridden. Otherwise, he is more likely to expel any confusing emotions in the form of, say, a two-month trek through the wilderness.
He is not someone who is ordinarily very good at understanding other people's emotions (something Creature can attest to, according to canon), so someone like Hyde, who is extremely confusing from nearly anyone's perspective, is essentially an emotional black hole that Frankenstein generally just tries to ignore.
Creature is correct, though! Edward Hyde does consider Frankenstein a friend, and is perhaps more affectionate towards him (granted, he is the sort of person to show affection in the manner of, say, a lion) than Jekyll is. Sometimes Hyde can get a little bored with his friends and, you know, kill them and things (as Lucy can attest to), but if he were going to kill Frankenstein, he would have done it before they left London. No point in killing your only guide through an epic wilderness.

Nice. How did you do the flash animation (i.e., where the animation is moved by simply clicking the "next" button)?

I used this tutorial! Please note that the flash tutorial by itself is slightly imperfect--however, the description and comments fill in the occasional hole~
This is very handy for showing storyboards!

these were seriously fun to read, seriously.
you have some mighty clean sketches, you can just turn this into a animation already and it'll still look nice!
it's kinda sweet to see Hyde and Frankenstein sorta like friends, it's sort of something I didn't expect out of Hyde, but then again I just barely got to know his character. I love your version of Hyde, he's scary but he's somewhat humane. Not sure if that made any sense but I just admire this character, I love a character that has two sides. He's also somewhat quite good looking... that little wink he did, SWOON.
Creature's just awesome.

Haha yeah I tend to sketch clean. 8|;; Actually it becomes a problem because sometimes rough is better, and I am bad at doing rough sketches XD;
In my story, Hyde and Frankenstein are actually very good friends! Frankenstein is actually acting more standoffish than usual (mostly because Hyde doesn't ordinarily come to him covered in fresh blood). I think Hyde's actions at the end of this story border on sentimental, but I justify it as: Jekyll's friendship towards Frankenstein go quite deep, so they even affect his very darkest self.

EEeeee this is wonderfu!! :3 Awesome ending X)
I particularly liked how Hyde practically squeeee'd over the sickle. That was the sauce. I also wanna say awesome job on Frankenstein's and Creature's conversation, and the arguement at the end was more than appropriate.
Hope that this becomes a full animation X3

The romance of Hyde and his sickle was an idea I came up with on the fly while watching the Daily Show one day (actually the idea of having Hyde in the story at ALL was an idea that I came up with on the fly....). It's probably the silliest part of the boards, but since I write Hyde so rarely, I am always trying to improve my depictions of him as both scary/silly. >O Glad you liked it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
otherwise In reply to ColtonBalske [2011-10-26 01:54:06 +0000 UTC]
I'm afraid that it most likely will not, for several reasons.... First of all, it was planned JUST as a storyboard project, so I wrote it without regard to length (it would be an incredibly long student film) or economy (the story gets pretty rambly at times, haha). Also I can get very picky with how their voices sound, and our school doesn't have a very reliable pool of voice actors--not to mention that said voice actors would have to be able to handle a Swiss-German accent AND two variations on a British accent. I would LOVE it if I could find voice actors with that ability, but I don't think I could!
Also, since this IS part of a much much longer story about these characters, I would rather focus my attention on fleshing out the rest of the story. X3

Hey that's cool! It's an awesome storyboard regardless, I think finishing the story is a good idea, and who knows maybe one day it will happen, and it will be the next adventure time? (considering it doesn't cross that adult/kid humor boarder that kids shows seem to be pushing back further and further)

AHHH! I loved every installment of this story!
I always got excited whenever I saw a new one up.
They're incredibly fun to read and I love the animation of it all, as if the pictures told the story themselves. WAY too much fun c:
Kind of like I was watching a movie! This format was great!
And I've read both Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (since thesis this year is man made monsters) and I fell in love with your portrayal of these guys.
Comical an yet spot on.
OH GOSH I need to shut up. I could go on and on XD

That's exciting that you're writing a thesis on that subject! Are the specific characters going to be involved? :3 Oh Gosh I can analyze these stories just to itty bitty pieces (and then, as this story demonstrates, pull them apart and rewrite them based on little details in their stories and the whims in my head). So good luck!

Oh yes! I actually read Jekyll and Hyde since that was my choice for my thesis theme. I'm a cartooning student so I have to make a sixteen page comic for Jekyll and Hyde. (So hard to condense such a fantastic story into only sixteen pages... D: I want to illustrate the whole story!)
I'm starting it from the end where Utterson is reading Jekyll's letter hoping that Henry summing up the story will help me condense it. It'll have the usual characters... Utterson, Lanyon, and Poole.
It really shows! I love the idea of Frankenstein and Jekyll being friends, both being the stubborn geniuses that they are. I imagine they would act just as you've depicted them.
And thank you! c:

I think choosing a portion of the story is definitely the way to go! Even with a relatively short story like Jekyll and Hyde, it can take up many pages if you plan to dramatize it properly. :< Are you gonna be taking many liberties with the story? I find the text can read as a little dry if you take it absolutely as is.... on the other hand, Henry is so verbally vague with a lot of his story descriptions that I would be interested to see how you show them visually! Please keep me updated on this projeeeeeect, I adore comic adaptations.
Yeah, my Frankenstein and Jekyll have a really epic history together D: They come from similar backgrounds but have gone really different directions in their life--they have a lot in common but then tend to have personal gripes with each other that lends itself to silly comedy like in this storyboard sequence....

azureverie In reply to otherwise [2011-10-26 19:55:23 +0000 UTC]
I'm trying to stick with the text as much as possible, since we have to stay very close to the original text for thesis. But one thing I've strayed away from with the text version is I reversed the ages of Jekyll and Hyde, where Jekyll is the young doctor and Hyde is the shriveled, seemingly older man. And I gave Jekyll a birthmark right under his left eye that he shares with Hyde... to act as a sort of link for the two. Not much really... But the text is very lovely anyway so I don't mind sticking to the story.
I definitely will! I'm sure once it's inked and possibly colored?, it'll end up on dA. I've just finished penciling page four and it's just a huge splash page of Jekyll trembling on the floor just before the pangs cease and he changes into Hyde (that was VERY fun to draw! Poor Jekyll...).
Even when we were reading Frankenstein in class I couldn't help but link their crazy experimental lives together. Only I feel Jekyll has a bit more control of his emotions where Frankenstein is more apt to question things and scare. These two definitely needed to meet and I'm glad you thought of it! I loved their comical friendship.

otherwise In reply to azureverie [2011-10-31 20:50:55 +0000 UTC]
Interesting! I'm wondering, what is your reasoning for switching their ages? It's true that many older versions rigged Hyde's make-up so that he appeared more gnarled and gross, but I don't think it's ever been outright stated that Hyde would be the older one....
Frankenstein definitely has less control over his emotions than Jekyll in the canon! He's like, bedridden for months just because he saw the monster for the first time. XD Jekyll manages to maintain a pretty good outward appearance until the murder....
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
azureverie In reply to otherwise [2011-10-31 23:02:17 +0000 UTC]
Really, I switched their ages on a whim XD There was no true reason why I decided a younger Jekyll would be best, I just had a gut feeling. So initially there was no reason. BUT, as I looked further into it, I figured having an older Hyde would be best, simply because as he's indulging in more freedom he can gain younger more youthful features and Jekyll can begin to look ragged and tired, much like an older man. Since Hyde was locked deep inside Jekyll, I feel like he would be shriveled and old, as if someone locked him under the stairs without food, water, or sunshine. And now that he has all of those, he can begin to grow. I'm kind of working it out as I go...
HAH! Yes. I always thought Frankenstein was overreacting a bit in the books. He thought his creation was beautiful at first but when he heard the creation speak in moans and grumbles he suddenly deemed he was hideous. The poor creature... Jekyll definitely has a much tougher shell. I think that's why I love him more and more as you go on in the book. You just watch this man slowly crumble in your hands.

I think Frankenstein's hysterical attitudes really confuse a lot of modern readers, just as much if not more so than Jekyll and Hyde's non-linear storytelling!

Frankenstein, despite his initial refusal, WILL probably use their corpses in some kind of experiment.

I'm afraid that if I did pick up the story at a later date, they probably would not be involved. :<
I believe that if they lived in any way, it would soften the story point of Hyde killing them.... Since I focus so much on character development, I rarely get to show Hyde being, well, a really nasty evil human being! And you need to see that side of him because it's a really important--probably THE most important--part of his personality. And if he hadn't killed them, Frankenstein would probably seem pretty petty for being nervous about him!
