Description
Alrighty then!
This is a complete first for me.
=pixiepot requested an animation/bounce tutorial, and this is what I've tried to do. I wanted to be able to cater for a wide range of abilities and levels by including explanations of why things move the way they do, as well as summaries of the absolute basics for those who may be new to animation. I really hope that I managed that balance; that people who already know how to animate using GIMP weren't bored by the revisiting of basics, and that those of you who are new to animation weren't intimidated by the rest of it.
I also appreciate that... there's a heck of a lot there.
I drafted everything I wanted to say in a Word beforehand and trust me, I took out as much as I felt I could.
Succinct is definitely not the word - but I hope that at least some of what I was wittering on about was even a teeny bit helpful to someone.
If you're not familiar with GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) , it's a free program similar to Photoshop, and I personally prefer it.
I would REALLY appreciate feedback on this one. Whether it's on the layout, design, explanations or even my animation methods - if you have an opinion, I'd love to hear it. Maybe you could drop me a critique.
Finally, I hope I managed to be useful! If you use my tutorial, come show me what you made - I'd love to see it.
This tutorial uses one of my deviations as an example.

Thank you so much for this! I appreciate it very much!
I'm very happy that I could help people, and that it was so well received. Maybe I'll make some more one day.
Thank you for your kind words and amazing feedback! You're too kind.

This is quite brilliant! If only it weren't so close to you already getting a DD, I would be suggesting it as we speak.
Firstly, you've managed to successfully keep the length of the tutorial to a suitable and manageable length, too often I find my internet struggles to load incredibly long images, and even though this might mean a tutorial needing to be split in two or sacrifice some visual elements, organisation and size are crucial elements in the design of a well-made tutorial.
Next I would like to compliment the fonts used and text size, it's a good choice to go with a large, simple font for ease of reading, as not all deviants are likely to have the same eyesight. It's a good idea to make sure everything is easily legible since that is also the key point of making a tutorial, people need to be able to read it and understand it clearly!
Next up, you've done really well with your content for the most part, I certainly learned a few things about the subject! The one thing that jumped out at me as something you could do to make the whole process a little easier for others to understand is to explain the movement of the emote for each frame in a similar manner to how this tutorial does; [link]
That tutorial is split in two parts, one for bounce and one for animation but I think yours is fine keeping the two things together (although do check out both parts for possible inspiration if you need). It is also helpful to do the same for any timing on each frame you may want to include (as you can see in that example).
I will conclude by thanking you for taking the time to put together such a valuable resource for the community, for sharing and to say as your first tutorial, you should be very proud!

Gosh! Thank you so much!
I've never had a critique before and now suddenly I get two on the same day?
Firstly I'd like to say thank you so so much for your in-depth feedback! I really appreciate you taking the time to say so much about my work, and you've given me some good stuff to work with. I see what you mean about explaining the movement of the emote frame-to-frame, which is something I considered while planning this. I was, however, conscious of over-doing it, and as I was trying to cater for what essentially was two audiences, (those who were looking for animation basics and those looking for the bounce in particular) a lot of the content I originally planned was taken out. It would have been so long otherwise!
You have a point, though. It's something I'll certainly consider for next time!
Thank you, again, for the wonderful feedback!!
And the fact that you even consider it to be of DD standard is enough for me.
THANK YOU!

You're very welcome, it's good for us both to learn from analysing these things
I hope you'll find something in there that encourages you to do more tutorials, since I'm always looking out for things to learn that are simply put and well organised in the way that you've done here
And if it were a DD, so many more people would be able to learn the classic bounce animation for emotes, particularly since there are so many more new emoticonists joining the community all the time.

That's very kind of you! I suppose I've put off tutorials in the past because I'm never sure if I'm doing things the 'right' way - but I guess there's no such thing a lot of the time. And maybe it's interesting for others to see different ways of approaching it. So yes, I'd gladly make more in the future.
That's true.
Well, lots of people seem to be looking at it recently anyway. I've no idea what happened..!
Thank you! Again!

Do you have to make it move one pxl at a time, or can you move it, f.x., two pixels or even three?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
otohime0394 In reply to dhxjcrd [2012-10-15 18:28:44 +0000 UTC]
You can move it as many pixels as you like. Just bear in mind that, generally speaking, your animation will be smoother with more frames of smaller movements than fewer frames of larger movements. Does that make sense?

....I feel like a noob for asking this, but how do you upload it to DA so others can use it in comments and stuff like that?

otohime0394 In reply to RampagingKoala01 [2012-08-13 18:20:24 +0000 UTC]
Thankya kindly!
Not at all, that's a very good question. Emotes cannot be uploaded directly to the deviantART emoticon legend, but you can create a PLZ account.
Essentially, a PLZ account is a whole new deviantART account made for the purposes of using the icon as an emote. For example, typing :iconteheplz: will create Simply make an account with a name ending in 'plz', and upload your emote as the account's avatar to use it.
Additionally you need to make sure that the canvas is 50x50 pixels, and that the file size doesn't exceed 15kb.
