Description
Alrighty then!
This is a complete first for me.
=pixiepot requested an animation/bounce tutorial, and this is what I've tried to do. I wanted to be able to cater for a wide range of abilities and levels by including explanations of why things move the way they do, as well as summaries of the absolute basics for those who may be new to animation. I really hope that I managed that balance; that people who already know how to animate using GIMP weren't bored by the revisiting of basics, and that those of you who are new to animation weren't intimidated by the rest of it.
I also appreciate that... there's a heck of a lot there.
I drafted everything I wanted to say in a Word beforehand and trust me, I took out as much as I felt I could.
Succinct is definitely not the word - but I hope that at least some of what I was wittering on about was even a teeny bit helpful to someone.
If you're not familiar with GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) , it's a free program similar to Photoshop, and I personally prefer it.
I would REALLY appreciate feedback on this one. Whether it's on the layout, design, explanations or even my animation methods - if you have an opinion, I'd love to hear it. Maybe you could drop me a critique.
Finally, I hope I managed to be useful! If you use my tutorial, come show me what you made - I'd love to see it.
This tutorial uses one of my deviations as an example.

You linked me to the wrong one, but I found it.
Wow, awesome! She looks extra cute with her glasses!
I tried to add it to the 'Who used me?' list but for some reason the thumb code won't work!

[link] thank you so much! i made the delay between the frames 0.00 except when i uploaded it on dA it suddenly became slower, like 0.01. i don't know what happened but recently it's been happening to all my emoticons. the one i uploaded a few days ago was faster than the animation i gave it on Photoshop. do you know what's wrong?

All riiiight! Awesome work, I love it!
And thank you very much for using my tutorial.
Unfortunately I have never used Photoshop for animation so I'm not sure what the problem could be... Although I know that on Gimp there's a default of 100ms per frame when you save it if it's not specified - did you specify the frame rate?
If that's not it (which it probably isn't because I'm totally guessing), I'd be tempted to nudge you in the direction of `SanguineEpitaph . Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure he uses Photoshop and might be able to help.
Thanks again!

I need some help.
I can't see where I went wrong. When I play back the animation, all the previous frames are still shown, if that makes sense. Please help me!

Aha!
No problem, let's see - first of all, have you named the layers correctly? It's important that they follow the format shown, and make sure that they all say 'replace' and not 'combine'!
If all the layers are named as they should be, the only other thing I can think of is if you cloned the layers to then adjust for the next frame rather than creating a new one. I did that at first, until I realised that for some reason, doing this means the animation doesn't work properly. If you did that, try erasing all the animation information from the layer names, then renaming them all individually. It's a pain, but it seemed for work for me.
Hope that solves it!

Oh. yes, I cloned the layers. I'll work hard and see if I can fix it. Thanks very much!

Hehe, no problem!
I had to work out the solution to that by myself, I got very very frustrated...

Do you also have a coloring/shading tutorial? I'm very noob at emoting. But I may do more, I had a lot of fun making a set, and had good feedback.

otohime0394 In reply to gillianivyart [2011-11-07 20:08:30 +0000 UTC]
Not one of my own, no - I'm very noob too, and when I started I looked at absolutely loads, such as this one: [link] But to be honest, in the end I found it easier to experiment and make it up as I went along.
Do it do it!

Great tutorial, thanks for the link. I went through maybe 10 tutorials before I did my emotes. I kinda did them my own way as well. I used Gimp for the first time with them. On the laptop with a touchpad . I think I can do better with PS and the Wacom!

I think it's more rewarding to do it your own way rather than use somebody else's. Plus it just suits you better!
I've been doing mine on the laptop with a touchpad too.. It's slow, but I'm getting used to it. Could never beat using the tablet though!

A lovely tutorial
I personally go from 'full squish' to 'half squish' to 'no squish after hitting the floor, or I find the movement too fast, but it's nice to see how you do it

Well, I tried that too, but I thought it seemed too slow! Maybe I was doing it wrong.

Indae In reply to otohime0394 [2011-11-07 16:22:32 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps just losing another frame, or something. Really a bounce contains almost of much individual style as an emoticonists shading or expressions. So I wouldn't worry, just experiment~

otohime0394 In reply to Indae [2011-11-07 16:25:25 +0000 UTC]
Maybe I'll try that, then, it would be interesting to test out a range of styles. I certainly will do - experimenting is the best part!
