I loved the reference guide! I have been wanting to experiment with that but wasn't sure where to start. Found your post on Pinterest and loved it!

hehe! I love your comment about the photo reference and drawing a horse. I know horses like the back of my hand having owned them and drawn them since I was a little kid. But when I paint my realistic equine sculptures - I always, always use a photo reference. No matter how well you think you know something - references always pay off. Great tut! Thanks!

Thank you for that, it's very helpful !

But I've one question left :
What type of color do you use ? What Swathes ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to MarlyTheTiger [2014-01-02 20:56:23 +0000 UTC]

Hi, I often make up some swatches for each individual piece of work. Often use colours from the reference photo or alter the colours if, as in this case, want an overall different look. As I progress in the painting, the colours are often picked from the work itself rather than swatches.

Over 2013 when I began really getting into Digital art, I've moved from straight copying a reference photo, to painting it different. I'm still working on getting to the stage where I can do a photo-realistic painting with no reference whatsoever... Now that would be a challenge!

MarlyTheTiger In reply to Packwood [2014-01-03 16:18:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh ... All right then.
I didn't think of it that way. It's obviously the best way to match the original.
So, I'll do my best with your advices. Thank you very much !

I hope to improve like that, to make more "fantasist" portrait, to find my own style one day. ((( Fingers crossed ! ))) And at the end, complete the Ultimate Challenge. ^^

Anyway, good luck with all your project. I'll be waiting to see more from you.

DeadPoetic17 [2013-11-16 08:18:44 +0000 UTC]

this helped me but, how many hours does the skin coloring takes you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to DeadPoetic17 [2013-11-16 20:27:35 +0000 UTC]

Sweet, yeah, the skin would probably be the hardest part of a portrait to get right, right behind hair. I will spend probably a good 2*3 hours getting the skin looking right before starting eyes etc. But then I continue to work on the skin throughout if I'm not happy with it.Β

If you look at the YouTube video, and realise it's about 10 hours compressed down to 2 minutes, you'll get a feel for how long I spend on the skin.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DeadPoetic17 In reply to Packwood [2013-11-17 14:44:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, skin is what I love the most but I wonder why 10 hours? approx?

( anyways thanks from the comment )

Goodness why 10 hours OwO hohoho

I have never experienced to color realistic skin in my whole life, but semi-realistic, yes Well, Any a slight mistake it will be so much affected?

Thanks alot! ^w^

how u blend the colors?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to ocheechan [2013-10-13 21:51:42 +0000 UTC]

Hi, just varying the opacity of the colour application (with Wacom pen pressure). I often paint very lightly, hardly perceptible when blending colour. For example, if you have a base skin tone and think it needs a little more red, I choose red, increase my brush size and paint a very faint application of red to give it just a tint. I find the blend tool that some people use not that great, cumbersome and it doesn't give a very nice result.

Packwood In reply to Packwood [2013-10-13 21:57:34 +0000 UTC]

Actually, in my speed painting videos I often have to cut out a lot of footage because although I'm painting, you can hardly see any change (not great viewing, even when sped up). The first thee steps above probably span a minute, the next three about 10 minutes, the next 6 probably an hour and the last three about 8 hours.

How many layers you used in this tutorial sir?

I mean you mentioned a base color and a paint layer... you did the painting on just a layer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to yasermohavi [2013-08-05 06:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Hi, I encourage you to watch the YouTube Speed painting video youtu.be/LNa-tpjVwwI

Mostly I use one layer for the background, one for the face, one for the hair and one for a sketch layer, all depends how complex I want to get.... I think the most I've used is about 120 layers

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

yasermohavi In reply to Packwood [2013-08-05 07:12:12 +0000 UTC]

Using one layer for each part doesn't make it harder if you make a mistake?

some people use ( Base-shadow-light) layers and some like you use one and still the outcome is Great ,having hard time to figure out the numerous waysΒ for painting, I guess I'm lost...Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to yasermohavi [2013-08-06 09:31:02 +0000 UTC]

lol, with painting you always make mistakes but you continue to paint and fix it, or the undo key. Having too many layers can actually make it harder to paint, for example, you paint on a layer but a layer above obscures your painting. Sometimes I paint on a higher layer but then merge it with the layers below and continue to paint on the merged layer. Certainly learn to layers and layer masks.

Hi Sir....
This tutorial Execellent and i want ask you about tools Use are
is You Use Only Brush ? Right ? and you press ( Alt ) to re coloring to mixingthe color all them thats right or im wrong
please repeat me

thanks

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Packwood In reply to JaferAlbahli [2013-07-30 19:52:01 +0000 UTC]

Hi, yeah, the eye-dropper tool to pick from your painting, pallet or reference. In my video, it may be too fast to see, but I'll be painting and then using eye dropper (ALT) click on the reference colour I want somewhere else in the face and then paint. With practice you get very fast and becomes like second-nature.

Do you use your own custom set of skin color swatches, all with different shades of skin color? Or pick them with the eye dropper tool of the original photo? Or just use the color sliders to visually get to the color you want to paint in?

Great tut, always had trouble starting the base part because I always start with a rather bright color as I don't really know how to color human skin. Seeing a step by step like this helps a lot.
