Description Well, here he is again: One step closer to logic, I can't imagine why I thought a more or less solid shade of dull gold could possibly be fitting.... [link] Ack. At any rate, he looks just a hair more believable, even if his mane appears a little superfluous here. Oh, and yes, I acknowledge how "strange" his gold coat is to begin with, but it is an anomaly and is rare among his tribe.

Any thoughts or suggestions you may have on his coloration are very welcome.

(Also, the usual apologies for continuing to be late with replies.)

Solid... gold I'm tempted to draw him as a statue (ie. he has been cast inside). "Am I golden enough now, April, am I?!" And he needs to be fed, he's so skinnyyyy Pro ana -pallanoph? I have to say, you're very in with the times

What I like most are the legs and pawpads. They look somehow... right. Just right. Of course, in all this is awesome work from you as always

pallanoph In reply to kalmanen [2010-03-22 18:11:19 +0000 UTC]

And you know that he'd make an awesome gold statue.

Running around is also very hard on the figure, lol. Is he that thin? I didn't notice! I guess I'll be charged for neglect then, won't I?

Glad you like the legs! I've had so many issues keeping everything "properly" constructed and in proportion as of late, for some reason.

Okay, maybe he's not pro ana yet but he will be, if you cast him in gold...

Really? Well, at least in this piece the legs look just fine

Hey, a pallanoph with my haircolour! I think it's gorgeous.
And that mane gives me the urge to braid it into multiple braids.

By the way, I just tried to pronounce that name... I liked it best with German/Spanish pronounciation, it just seemed to flowy in the english way. But then again, I guess that's the way you'd pronounce it. I get the feeling you wouldn't recognise your pallanophs when I'm pronouncing their names.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Narkya [2010-03-22 17:59:12 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I'm glad you think so! I wonder how he'd feel about the braids? Ridiculous at first, then perhaps he might acknowledge they keep excess twigs and leaves from sticking in it!

I think I agree with you on the pronunciation... it should feel a little more harsh and less flowy, given their own tribe's speech is coarse sounding to us.

Silly, I have a hard time pronouncing the words that way to other people, since they probably wouldn't understand what I was talking about, haha!

Narkya In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-22 21:00:25 +0000 UTC]

Braids not only keep twigs and leaves from sticking in the hair, they also keep the hair from flying into your eyes and kind of stop it from falling onto your food. They are really usefull sometimes. But then again, yes, they can look pretty ridiculous.

If you ever publish your book, make sure to have the names' pronounciation explained at the beginning. I'm sure that would help a lot (and confuse all those unable to read it).

And really, if I ever visit the USA for a longer time, I'll make sure to drop by at your place for an afternoon or something. It should be interesting.

Amazing detail in the fur. I love his face, it looks almost human. I don't know about colours, I like the ones you've chosen. Maybe use some more reds to break up the orange.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Hortensie-Stone [2010-03-22 17:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And I'm glad you see the rather human aspect of his face: I wanted a face that was animal, and yet capable of expressing emotion. Hard to do without people simply assuming it's an anthro.

I am thinking about adding more of the rusty tint in areas... We'll see how it goes!

Wow- love seeing some coloured pencils from you. Nharath looks gorgeous!
Beautiful fur, the variation of tones is great. He's still gold- but much more natural

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2010-03-22 17:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Colored pencil is so therapeutic, probably because one doesn't have to rinse a brush out every few minutes. However, losing track of the color you need can be a little bothersome, hehe...

I've been wanting to do this for ages, he was so... monotone in all his other images, eeks! Hopefully he'll keep evolving in the right direction.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Y-Esk In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-27 08:08:28 +0000 UTC]

Indeed perhaps the main reason coloured pencil have turned out to be my preferred medium. Though I should really try to grab my paints more often. Pencils are just so convienient!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2010-03-28 03:14:07 +0000 UTC]

True true! I especially love mixing the two, but for me, nothing could be easier for backgrounds than watercolors!

For me, having certain kinds of paper make all the difference with colored pencil. I need texture and color, I'm rather helpless on white paper! (Part of the reason I envy how solid your work is!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Y-Esk In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-29 02:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Burnishing helps a lot with white paper although lately I have been laying down a light wash over the subject matter to eliminate the evil whiteness that may show through the pencils XD

I'm still meaning to try some coloured paper- how slow I am at getting around to things

I wish I could texture fur like you . I think he looks much more believable now with the color variations in that gorgeous coat Gold is such a fascinating color in the natural world... I recently met someone with told eyes!
How are you liking those colored pencils? I've only ever been satisfied with prisma thus far, but I don't think I've touched any of the brands you listed above.

btw, you're NOT boring

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Ashzoi [2010-03-22 17:36:24 +0000 UTC]

But you do awesome shiny horsies!

I'm glad you think so! I was so tired of seeing all the images of him in my gallery with his monochromatic gold failure all over the place, bwahaha... I've been meaning to do this for ages now, and only just got the opportunity.

Gold is fascinating... it's rather under appreciated these days, since everyone is so into silver. And gold eyes? Now THAT is awesome!

Derwents are simply fantastic. They blend, erase and layer better than Prismacolor, in my humble opinion. And they come in an awesome variety these days.

Awww... thanks for saying so, Ashley.

At last! He'll probably continue to shift a little bit, but this is definitely a step in the right direction, I think. If nothing else, he will continue to have a gold-based coat.

GaianBells In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-22 23:53:57 +0000 UTC]

I find the gradient of shades you've put in make his coat much more attractive. Especially those dark ochre stripes on his back and tail. Makes him much more three dimensional.

I didn't think it looked strange at all. You see this kind of thing with canids all the time! I think it looks wonderful! Love the blond hair. I have to agree with about the right rear paw. It seems a tad too long in comparison to the others somehow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2010-03-22 17:20:50 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't? Goooooood, this pleases me.

The blondeness makes him stand out, and it also makes him vulnerable in the sense he can't blend in quite as well as his darker colored fellows. Too bad pallanophs see in color, otherwise it wouldn't matter all that much!

That paw is quite off, I should photoshop it into shape, haha!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MistingWolf In reply to pallanoph [2010-03-23 03:01:52 +0000 UTC]

Mhm. It makes me think of referencing naturally dark-haired girls who died their hair blond. Looks just like that, haha! [blond-blonds are so overrated. Too many of them and totally unexceptional].

Hooray colors [did you know that most men are somewhat colorblind? But then they have better night vision to make up for it, or so I hear] Does their prey see in color too? Then it'd be really hard to hide!

Indeed you should ^ ^ Someday

Thanks very much! I'm rather pleased with how his tail turned out, hehe... the dark knuckles of the paws interest me strangely as well, not sure what made me think to do that. Maybe I just wanted to avoid giving him the expected white feet?

Lionsong In reply to ??? [2010-03-20 01:49:14 +0000 UTC]

Maybe a bit more dappling or light brown stripes? Kind of like the big cats it would give him a bit more camouflage in wooded areas or high grassed areas. Figure that the closer you get to woods and out of grasslands you get less of that golden color in animals and more darker tones. Difference between tigers and lions.

Also I can't figure it out, but the back right paw seems too flat. Still a rather gorgeous critter, kind of reminds me of a cross between a Borzoi and a deer.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Lionsong [2010-03-22 17:14:41 +0000 UTC]

His coloration is an anomaly among his type... the Nehrannon tribe (central European, more or less) are normally a lot darker and have some of the faint striping. So he's an oddball, definitely stands out in a crowd. I need to do color examples for the other types, so I'm wondering how that will go.

It does seem a little flat, I noticed that after I'd posted it, haha... Seems to be the way things go.
