Description
Might be the last bit of personal work you'll see in a little while... unless, that is, you'd like to see doodles. And I don't think I could bear to post just any doodle, as I don't want to waste your time, but if I come up with a decent collection I can upload those together. I don't know, I'm a bother right now, and I have a lot more important work to be doing!Yet another of those "waiting for the paint to dry" studies worked on between all the other little things. However, I found it justified, as poor Sorstan the assassin has had extremely few depictions of him posted here, and even less in color. Poor bugger.
That said, I'm also a bit peeved by the way the color bounced off the highlight areas and bled out a bit, haha! Likely need to readjust my scanner, as I'm only so apt at photoshop. *groan* (You think it's just a lame excuse, but I promise you it looks more consistent in person. Unless I'm actually going blind?)
No. For the love of all things holy, he is not meant to resemble a maned wolf, fox, or anything of a russet coated persuasion, I assure you. His plain coat needed some points, so I added them. Note that the creamy markings are not white, but just that, dull cream. I'm not fully certain how I feel about those dark stockings of his, though they serve the purpose of being less visible than light colored feet. His younger brother, Tjardek, is similar, yet is more of a deep dark auburn/mahogany and has less dramatic "points" to his coat.
It's likely I missed something. Anyway, this was an assortment of Derwent colored pencils (Artists, Studio, and Coloursoft) on my preferred surface of choice, Canson Mi-Teintes. (It's a pastel paper.)
Thoughts, comments, critiques, what have you are welcome.

Hm, I didn't even think about him resembling colour-wise some animal untill you mentioned it. And even then, it's a pretty far streched. Blue eyes fit extremely well with his autumn-coloured fur Beautiful work as ever.

Oh, good! I was really worried (once the thing was finished, of course
) That the first words someone would post might be "looks like a maned wolf/fox/etc." So I'm really glad that doesn't immediately come to mind.

Absolutely stunning! Sorstan is such a great character, I've always loved his beard
(I dislike beards on men, but Sorstan carries it off XD!
) I love the new cream highlights to his fur, the texture is wonderful, and I really like the dark stockings, personally - they remind me a little of gloves ^^

Hehe! Glad you don't mind the beard... I've been waiting for someone to ask about it, and potentially demand I get rid of it.
The stockings are growing on me... I think I'll keep them this way.

Wow, I love how your pallanophs are very easily distinguishable for the individuals that they are. I can translate Sorstan into a human version with ease, something flashier self-made species might never achieve. (And if that's what you can do with Derwents, I'll definitely give them a try when my Prismas are used up!)

Ahhhh, gosh thanks so much! As many no doubt can relate, I always worry myself over character design in terms of individuality and how they compare/contrast with others. Sorstan and Tjardek, being brothers, look alike, though I hope, when Tjardek's reference is put up, that one can distinguish their personalities through appearance.
Oh, how I love my Derwents... they harmonize so well with one another!

I can be really rusty about starting a colored pencil piece when I haven't used them in a while, but before long I remember more or less how it all works. Thank you!

Where did you get the name pallanoph from? It seems to me like it might mean something, but I have no clue what... ^^'

It's quite interesting to me that I've been asked this question by a fair number of people! The story isn't all that interesting... I came up with it while ill with a fever 7 or 8 years ago and had decided I should brainstorm a name for the earlier phase of this species. The word "pallanoph" tumbled out by chance, and then stuck.
I should probably find a definition for it, in a sense that the pallanophs call themselves by this name. Unfortunately I'm not all that learned in terms of linguistics.

Thank you! I have a rather chaotic "method" with colored pencils, to be completely honest... a lot of deep color/light color alternations, to keep the color from getting too flat.

Wow, gorgeous color job. Somehow his eyes seem a little odd to be, however that may be due to their blue color against a brown coat (which you know, is unusual).

He looks beautiful, if not that happy to have his picture taken. I guess I can't see where your scanner made the colors bleed, but then again, I can't see the original. I very much like how you colored him, even the stockings. Is that a scar on his right front leg?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2010-07-01 03:36:01 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, yes he does look a bit bothered here, doesn't he?
The scanner kind of burned out the highlighted areas, so they look too luridly yellowish. Glad you like the stockings! I couldn't just leave his legs the same color as the rest of him, and white stockings would be entirely too flashy, especially for an assassin.
Ahhh, not a scar, I don't think, but it does look a bit like one, now that you mention it. o_0

MistingWolf In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-02 01:08:52 +0000 UTC]
I didn't think that the yellowish tinting looked too bad, but I suppose that wouldn't be very good for an assassin. I'm sure the real thing looks even better ^_^
As for the leg "scar", was it just because of the darker shading?

Though I do think supporting such a weight on a back as curved (and flexible) as his would be too much a strain.

I just hope I can modify Tjardek enough to keep him recognizable from past works, yet perhaps a hair more interesting. We'll see how it goes!

He is a rather melancholic character at heart, actually. He's normally quite stonefaced and rarely speaks unless, of course, to relay information/commands.
Oh yes, and that too! We don't like to see dirty feet!
