Description
oh boy, this is the part where I'm supposed to put down an emotional speech that will reach the hearts of thousands to strengthen my argument...I never do well under pressure...In all seriousness, this is something I sometimes still encounter. Both IRL and online. In real life you have people that think it's weird that a 28 year old man still watches cartoons or invests this much time into video games. That I have to ''grow up'' and be an adult and I'm like...I already am?
I have a (part time) job, I pay my rent, I do my own grocery shopping and I pay for my own health care. By all accounts I am an ''adult''. I just happen to have hobbies that don't correlate with what other people do in their spare time (and to be fair, that's mostly adults of my old man's generation. People of my age tend to have the same hobbies as I do).
I don't see the appeal in (and this MIGHT sound a bit stereotypical) watching sports, talking about cars, watching other ''adult'' shows on TV and the like. It never appealed to me and I'm suppose to enjoy that stuff now because I've reached a certain age? That just doesn't make a lick of sense to me. People ought to enjoy the things that speak to them and for me, cartoons, comics and games do that.
These things hold more value most of the time then whatever they watch and most importantly, they are FUN. They are escapism because after a crappy day I want to unwind and forget that I have to go back to that same crappy job again tomorrow. I can play a game where I can be the hero that saves the day, I can watch a cartoon where the power of friendships makes everything right. It's doesn't mean I'm running away from anything. I'm recharging so I can face whatever's ahead of me. For some that's watching sports. For me it's something else. Being an adult simply means to take responsibility and contribute to society in some way, not the things that I enjoy in MY spare time.
As for online, this mostly applies to people who like the same medium(s) as you do but berate you because you like one thing they don't. You won't believe the crap some people give me online because I DARE to like an anime like Naruto or a cartoon like MLP.
I'm not making this into a ''woe is me'' thing'' and it sounds MUCH worse then it is but it just baffles me that these people care THIS MUCH that a random stranger online likes this one thing they don't. To me, that's more worthy of being pitied on (which you SHOULDN'T do btw. Always take the high road). Because in the end we are all geeks. We are the ones with ''weird'' hobbies that, even when Marvel and Star Wars movies make billions of money and trailers premiere during the fudgin' Super Bowl of all things, some people still label as ''childish'' because it doesn't comfort to their views of what an ''adult'' is supposed to like.
Be a geek! Be weird! Be awkward! Make fanart, write fanfiction, make analytic/funny videos on these things, draw ecchi/porn of it and most, most importantly...be YOU! You are a unique person on this world and you have the goddamn given right to enjoy the (legal) things that you like! Share these with your friends and other people! Indulge yourself in them and still take responsibility as an adult! The point of life my friends (besides leaving some sort of legacy) is to enjoy it. Experience and live it to it's fullest potential! To leave your own unique mark on this world and by doing ANY, AND I MEAN ANY, of these things I mentioned above you are doing just that! Your work will inspire others to do the same and they in turn will inspire others and so on and so forth! Create such a chain of smiles! Pierce the very heavens themselves with such happiness! That should be your goal in life!
Your work, you worth as a person is not determined by such standards as ''being a regular adult''! It is determined by how good of a person you are and how you help others and by being a geek, by enjoying these things with other people and sharing it with them, you ARE telling EVERYONE that you are worth something dammit! So stand up and stand proud my friends! Stand up and tell everyone what you like and never show even a quarter of shame for it! For there is nothing wrong with what we enjoy!
Okay, that was WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY too sappy, even for my own tastes. Still, I meant every word I said. Keep on enjoying what you enjoy and don't be ashamed of it. And if someone gives you shit for it...fuck 'em. They are not worth the time and effort. Just keep scrolling forward. Now if you will excuse me, I have some adult responsibilities to take care of!
You're gonna watch more big titted monster girl anime aren't you?
...I HAVE GODDAMN NEEDS PEOPLE! And I'm damn proud of it!
Sad, sad man...
