Description
Ok, official word is that an Affiliation Widget is now in the design phase for the groups system. The staff are looking for as much feedback and ideas as then can get, so please feel free to comment here (sending it to #devBUG just means we have to re-link to it in a comment thread and then individually look at each post, whereas all the comments can be read at once by posting here)I have a request: there have been tons of suggestions about affiliates. and affiliates is something that everyone has a different opinion of what it even is, depending on their experience. could you guys distill all of those suggestions. Comments on this:
One idea that was proposed (=Paradise-of-Darkness [link] 1/3/09) was for folders for affiliates. I tried to model this like the gallery/fav submission system where users could choose which folder their group would appear in on their affiliate's page; so like you can select which folder your submission will go into, you will have the choice in which folder your group appears in.
The affiliates widget could appear in the "About Us" section and optionally the Profile Page, that's how I was imagining this panning out.
I also tried to model the main affiliation initiation section like a reverse join - so rather than a user going up to the group and clicking the 'join' button, the group is going to another group and clicking the 'affiliate' button.
I also agree with *Tetsuk0 that there should be a second way to affiliate (rather than visiting the other group's page as I've shown above) but instead have a page in the admin section that functions nearly identically to the invite system: you can go to this affiliate page by selecting the text link and then just fill in the other group's name and press send.
AND 1 button on your own group's page (only visible to admin people) similar to "invite a member" button, that says something like "INVITE an AFFILIATED GROUP". [link] 1/3/09

Yeah, I just hope they don't do anything weird with affiliation limits - I really don't want to be managing an affiliation list on top of everything else.

I like the invite idea, and the widget looks straightforward as you have it set out. I do also approve of the idea of having different sections where affiliates could be listed, and perhaps the ability to have a "featured" set of affiliates so we can put other similar Groups there, or maybe highlight the other Groups run by the admins, and they'd always be the first ones listed.

It sounds like an interesting addition, but unless there is a large number of affiliates then a simple list might be all that is needed.

I see no reason why not - like the folders in the group's gallery it should be possible to only have one if that's all you want, but for bigger groups like [link] I think folders would be the way to go.

Looks great, but I'm wondering whether we really need folders for affiliates. A lot of clubs just had a simple single list before their conversion to Groups

I want you to look at [link] and tell me that would be better off in one big pile. Looking at #MasterPhotoshop , they've made it clear they want to promote groups that are related to them (they'd affiliate with a digital arts group, but not a sewing group for example), but with folders they could still affiliate without necessarily promoting the other group as much.

Personally I would argue that if there are too many groups to fit on one list, there's not much point in affiliating with them all
I certainly wouldn't look through that whole list, no matter how many folders you split it into

Well, how is affiliating different than posting favs in a group? Both are broken down into folders. With favs, people can try and list them all in one section, but some prefer to break them down into folders. Not everyone looks through the favs, no matter how many folder you break it down into -- the idea is that if one folder like "Digital" grabs your interest, you would be inclined to look at just that folder in the affiliates rather than looking through all of them.
~I certainly wouldn't look through that whole list, no matter how many folders you split it into
Well, if you aren't looking through any of the folders, I can't imagine you looking though an even longer list that would exist without the folders.
~there's not much point in affiliating with them all
I'd go the other way on that, if people are unwilling to look through a huge pile of affiliates, they'd be more inclined to look through a specific folder that lists just groups related to their interests.
What if there was an option to see all the affiliates at once despite the folders they are sorted in, much like the "Browse All" favs option? Would that work?

RE: ~does that mean my icon can be MOVED later by the other group (like gallery deviations), moved from one folder to another if I (or they) decide that the folder name was not appropriate for that group...?
Well yes I did mean that the group who owns the widget does the controlling, what I meant was, say I have a widget which is under my control, can I move icons from here to there if I want to (or if the other person requests it of me)? (sorry I worded it poorly)...
But yes, thankyou for answering my questions. Your model here is great!

WOW! This is looking great! So with those folders, can you add folders and name them yourself (like in gallery). Also, I notice when you were filling in the info in the first part, the applicant selected which folder BOTH groups' icons would go into. Does this mean if I choose that MY group should go into (say) digital on someone elses affiliates, and they don't have that folder yet, my group entering will create that folder automatically on their list? or do I only get to choose from folders that other group already has? and if so, can I suggest (in the note part) which folder I would like to have my group put in to (so they can create a new folder) and then, does that mean my icon can be MOVED later by the other group (like gallery deviations), moved from one folder to another if I (or they) decide that the folder name was not appropriate for that group...?
I am dying for this all to become a reality! Excellent job *applause*

~WOW! This is looking great! Thank you
~can you add folders and name them yourself (like in gallery) Yeah. Sorry I didn't put in as much detail into the widget itself as I should have
~Or do I only get to choose from folders that other group already has?
Yes, that was the design I had in mind
~can I suggest (in the note part) which folder I would like to have my group put in to
Well, your application will tell the system which folder you would like to have your group put into. I tried to make it like the favs system, so you come up to the group and select the folder you would like to submit your art/group into. If they don't have that folder, you can note the staff to add a better titled folder, but there should be like a Featured or otherwise default folder already available.
~does that mean my icon can be MOVED later by the other group (like gallery deviations), moved from one folder to another if I (or they) decide that the folder name was not appropriate for that group...?
I was imaging (though I didn't show it) that each group would have complete control on their own pages, but not over other groups. So if I control #teentitans , and then #MasterPhotoshop asks to affiliate with us, then I can accept the invitation -- after the initial affiliation, I can only control which folder #MasterPhotoshop appears in within #teentitans . I can also terminate the affiliation if I *really* despise the folder they've put my group in (I envision the ability to break of affiliates being more related to breaking off from dead groups or cutting connections with groups that start flamewars of something)
~I am dying for this all to become a reality! Excellent job *applause* Thank you again
