Description This tutorial explains how a buyer and an artist can set up payment using deviantART's Commission Widget.  Through this process, the artist receives CASH through PayPal.  The artist DOES NOT receive any points.  There is a two week delay between when the buyer sends payment and when the artist receives the funds through PayPal.

If you see any typos, please let me know

As you can see, this process is needlessly complicated.  To see a proposal for a far simpler system, refer to:

Curious, I have no idea where they got their information from.  I was part of the team that tested this service before public release, so I've inspected the widget in detail but never came across what she's referring to.  The only thing I can think of is that they waive the $5 transaction fee if you're withdrawing by check, but that does not affect the PayPal withdrawal system.  The 20% fee imposed by dA affects all members.  If you pay $5 to DA for 400 points and then commission an artist for 400 points, the artist can only cash the 400 points out to $4.  DA's transaction fee is built into the service equally for everyone.

this might be a dumb question but-- i set up some point commissions but the listing had different point amounts.
the buyer sent in a request of commish but paid a different amount to my PAGE, not through the widget.  so their commish is paid, but i'll have to deny the "request of commish" from the widget because its a different price.  are there any consequences to selecting 'no'?
example: listing says 20 pts, actual commish was 100 = this was paid to page, the 20 pts request is still there
btw is it better to hold point commish and have a direct point transaction, or have the widget?
thanks!

Selecting "No" returns the points the user paid specifically for the commission.  It does not affect any other commissions or point trades except for that one instance.

Direct point transfers are better in most circumstances because you get 25% more value for the same price to the commissioner.

Does this require me to have a paypal account? Because at the moment, I dont have a paypal account yet and set up a commission widget, I noticed it didnt have and commission button. So is it required or not?

parallellogic In reply to RaikaSapphire [2015-05-17 22:39:26 +0000 UTC]

It is not required to have a PayPal account to hold commissions. However, since dA takes out 20% of the money from commissions, it's generally better to just use the Donation Widget to transfer points.

Hey, I'm having this trouble with the widget, and was wondering if you have a solution. Today I wanted to edit a commission, so I tried editing it, but I got a "You have pending requests for this commission these requests must be accepted or declined before......etc" error message. My problem is, that I had no idea that requests from the widget app go to correspondence, so I always mass delete all my correspondence, and it's empty where it says requests should be >_<

So is this what happened? And if it is, is there a way to retreive the requests, or make the app editable again?

That a good question I don't know the answer to.  Please ask the help desk and let me know what they say.

I have few questions.
If I do commission and buyer paid 600 pt

1. mean I received  $6 in next 2 week right?
2. If I withdraw to paypal I'll get = $6- fee(of paypal),  right?
3. but if I convert back to point I'll get 600pt - 20% , right?

If i do commissions and use the widgets and stuff, is there a certain time limit before I have to trade the money? Like, do I have to transfer it to points or PayPal right away? Or can I just keep it there until I want to withdraw it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to DaniDragongal [2015-04-23 06:50:01 +0000 UTC]

The funds will sit in your Earnings page indefinitely until you cash them out as points, check or PayPal.  As I recall, you have to wait a minimum of two weeks before you can withdraw the funds.

I'm a little confused.. uvu;! someone paid with 100 points through the commission widgit and it says they sent me $1 but I don't have paypal. My balance on DA didn't go up by 100 points either. What do I do? I feel like I didn't follow this correctly ;-;

parallellogic In reply to aughtt [2015-03-25 02:19:34 +0000 UTC]

You can convert your earnings to points via this page:
www.deviantart.com/account/ear…
However, as discussed above, I would recommend using the Donation Widget rather than the Commission Widget in the future so you can earn more points for the same effort.

mewhaku In reply to ??? [2015-03-23 14:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh jeez, I accidentally sent points through this as I thought that's where I was supposed to send them- I didn't know that this only converts points to cash. If I request a refund can I get those back and send them to the artist correctly? How long does this take? I'm so, so confused.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to mewhaku [2015-03-23 14:45:34 +0000 UTC]

If someone set up a Commission Widget, that's probably how they wanted to receive points.  The Commission Widget can output both cash and points for the artists.  I'm saying here that if it is known that you both want to deal with points you should use the Donation Widget to transfer funds because there isn't a 20% loss in the process.

It doesn't work here My friend and I tried it several times, contact the DA staff and we still don't get what's the problem. I drew her the comission, she paid it via comission widget and all works, I accept and so on. After that a DA message is send and the points went back to her account

RobertMisirian In reply to ??? [2015-01-23 04:55:08 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually getting started with doing commissions. I have only one question: what do you mean "if both the buyer and the seller hold their funds in PayPal"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to RobertMisirian [2015-01-23 15:11:59 +0000 UTC]

If both the buyer and seller have PayPal accounts, then there is no reason to convert PayPal cash to DA points, transfer the points, and then take a 20% tax before converting the DA points back to PayPal cash.  It's better to conduct a direct PayPal transfer where you aren't losing a large portion of your funds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertMisirian In reply to parallellogic [2015-01-23 17:14:11 +0000 UTC]

So basically to avoid the 20% fee there has to be only one user (the buyer or the seller) who has a PayPal account. Is this true?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to RobertMisirian [2015-01-24 19:07:48 +0000 UTC]

To avoid the 20% both people need PayPal so they can send the funds from one PayPal account to the other.  DA charges 20% but PayPal does not.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertMisirian In reply to parallellogic [2015-01-25 01:03:19 +0000 UTC]

So you can't send funds from a DA account to a PayPal account?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to RobertMisirian [2015-01-25 13:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Not directly, no.  The only way to get funds from DA to PayPal is for one user to send points to another user's commission widget.  The points will then be available to withdraw from DA as either PayPal, check or points.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertMisirian In reply to parallellogic [2015-01-27 04:11:16 +0000 UTC]

Does that happen when someone accepts your commission offer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to RobertMisirian [2015-01-27 13:22:57 +0000 UTC]

No.  By design the commission widget is designed to work with points

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobertMisirian In reply to parallellogic [2015-01-27 23:50:19 +0000 UTC]

I see. So someone sends points to another user's commission widget when one user sends you a request for your commission and you accept?
