Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! Nar Gojira kikassen o'uta bed'den, o'snappa!"Translation: "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming. And then Godzilla woke him up, and boy is he pissed."
No, not an IDW cover this time. This is a special piece for the 100th issue of G-FAN Magazine (yes, I broke my "no fanzine" policy again- my bud Matt Frank asked and it was the 100th issue- sue me). Check out G-FAN here: [link]
The idea for this has been kicking around for a while, ever since I saw a gag on Facebook where someone took the poster art for GODZILLA VS. THE THING (which features G fighting off a mass of green tentacles- which is odd, b/c his enemy in the actual movie was Mothra) and replaced the title with "GODZILLA VS. CTHULHU". So that got me thinking how that might actually look if done "properly"- so here's 'Zilla throwing down with everybody's favorite Great Old One off the coast of Innsmouth.
I like to think the guy on the cliff is played by Jeffrey Combs. One guess what book he's holding.

Godzilla for the win.
Yeah, I'm saying that here and now. Why? Because Cthulhu may represent how we're so small... Godzilla is a different story. Plus, we've never actually seen Cthulhu do battle with anything. Not to mention we don't know if it's psychic abilities work on anything not human.
Plus, Godzilla is king of the monsters.

Cthulu does have amazing regenerative properties, and Lovecraft did say nuking it would only wound it, and mean when he came back he would be radioactive.
However, the newest Godzilla took a nuke to the face and it didn't seem to even of left a scratch on him, and comes with a lot more offensive powers besides "rabid insanity."

Oh my god... You never read a Lovecraft story, have you? Lovecraft NEVER said anything about nukes. That was August Derleth, einstein, and Derleth is notoriously a crappy and unimaginative Cthulhu Mythos author.

Nerd mode on
Put money on tentacle guy... fat chance
Im judging this objectively
Godzilla has brute strength
Cthulhu in other hand has brute strength. But he is not a brainless monster
He is intelligent, proven by his knowledge of magic and manipulation towards mortal
Cthulhu also has more manuever, wings and tentacle, and perhaps even summons
Oh. And if you said size does not matter. Its the biggest bullshit i ever had

Godzilla is stronger and he's rather intelligent. He had a conversation, he asked why he should defend the humans when they're so scared of him. He can pretty much think like a human. In some cases of giang Kaiju fighting, size does matter, but what matters more is sheer power and Godzilla is much more powerful than any Kaiju really. He's fought them all, from giant Kaiju to mechs to even Gods. Hell, he killed Satan

Where on Earth did you come to the conclusion that Godzilla's brainless? Not only is he far from that, Godzilla has won quite a few of his battles by thinking strategically, and outwitting his enemies.

Trust me, Big G is not even close to a brainless monster either. His brute strength alone is enough to take down most enemies, though this match would be a close call.

ββ¦ the brave Norwegian drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. Then awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but Johansen drove on relentlessly. There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler would not put on paper. For an instant the ship was befouled by an acrid and blinding green cloud, and then there was only a venomous seething astern; whereβGod in heaven!β the scattered plasticity of that nameless sky-spawn was nebulously recombining in its hateful original formβ¦β β Excerpt from The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Recombining or not, he lost to a steamboat. Godzilla may very well kill him by accident before they have a real fight.

My money's on Godzilla. I think Cthulhu is vastly overrated. In godzillas 50 year career he has overcome almost any challenge he's come across no matter how impossible it may be. Cthulhu can't even win in his own book, he ended up getting knocked out by a steam boat. It didn't kill him but he got his head split open and had to go to his undersea city to heal for like another millennium. If it was like a battleship I would understand but it was just a little steamboat, and this was canon too. If an "all powerful god" gets injured by a tugboat then how will he fair against a nuclear blast from Godzilla? I will admit Cthulhu wasn't at his most powerful at that time and the book states:"the stars weren't quiet right". So does that means he's most powerful SOMETIMES? And the stars are usually just right for one night. So for one night in every thousand years or so Cthulhu's at his most powerful? Yet Godzilla is as strong as he needs to be 24/7. Since there is barley any info of Cthulhu in his canon book, lets look at him when he's not canon. Cthulhu has appeared in South Park and in an episode of the animated ghost busters cartoon, and at the end of both of them he was defeated. When ever I come across something with Cthulhu in it, weather it's a book, tv show, or a video game, he ends up getting defeated in some way. I have yet to see him win or achieve his goals. People keep saying Cthulhu can blink Godzilla out of existence but in when has he ever done that? In no sort of fiction, not even in the book, has he ever blinked things out of existence. And if he can why didn't he blink that boat out of existence. I'll accept that he can turn people insane by looking at him but I don't think that would benefit Cthulhu at all. Now instead of fighting regular Godzilla he has to fight insane Godzilla, which will most likely make Godzilla even more violent than he already is. After all the angrier Godzilla gets the stronger he becomes. Godzilla has a vast majority of fighting experience while Cthulhu has next to none. I don't recall Cthulhu fighting any monster or anything for that matter. He's just used to people worshiping him because he's Cthulhu , he not used to opposition. He's in for a rude awakening when he finds out Godzilla is not gonna back down so easily. Everyone keeps saying Cthulhu is several mountains high and will rule the world but if he gets his head split open by a little steamboat then his head is much smaller and so is the rest of his body. And i have yet to see him succeed in world domination. And size doesn't really matter cause Godzilla has beaten opponents that are much bigger than he is (biollante, king ghidora, kaiser ghidora ,bagon). Infact he tossed kaiser ghidora, who is almost twice his size, into space and blasted him into oblivion. Hell Godzilla was suppose to fight Satan himself (the film was cancelled unfortunately) Another factor is that Cthulhu was created back in the 1920's, before nuclear weapons were created so H. P. Lovecraft could have been amazed by the power of the nuclear bomb and maybe Cthulhu is not completely immortal, just impossible to kill in that time period. The book states that he is an unkillable god who has a vast amounts of powers but are these the words of the all knowing author or the words of the worshipers ,trying to hype up Cthulhu. (I'm actually asking that question because I think the book is in a first person perspective and not in the author's) Its hard to explain but for example, in the first AVP movie the Aztecs (or what ever they are) worshiped the predators as gods. The predators aren't gods but they were treated as such due to the fact that they were so advanced, as far as technology, that humans at that time couldn't comprehend the existence of these creatures so they thought they were supernatural beings. So is Cthulhu really a god or just a very powerful being that is treated as such? (Feel free to tell me) Maybe Cthulhu is a god but if you know any thing about videogames, or just fiction in general, killing gods is not an impossible task, i mean look at characters like kratos, bayonetta, spawn, and even Godzilla, they defeated gods before. Megalon was considered a god and so was Mothra, king ghidora and Baragon in one of his movies(they were guardian gods). And in one retro game called Super Godzilla he defeated a very powerful kaiju named Bagon. Im not sure he was actually a god but none the less he was a very powerful monster. In a nutshell when you look at the two combatants you have one that has overcome seemingly impossible challenges, and even breaks the laws of physics sometimes, (Godzilla vs hedora) while the other claims to be an all powerful god, but has yet to succeed in his goal what ever kind of media he's in.(and who gets owned by 20th century steamboats) Godzilla worked for his title as king and he sure as hell earned it, he defeated countless enemies, but Cthulhu just shows up one day a demands praise without lifting a finger to prove himself. And even if Cthulhu does win its not gonna be a walk in the park for him. In fact I think Cthulhu will have mental problems of his own after fighting Godzilla. I know this is a very lengthy comment but I'm tired of people making Godzilla look like a wuss next to Cthulhu. I'm not saying this is a flawless victory for Godzilla, this might be one of his most powerful opponents yet, I'm just saying I'm sticking with the one that has proved his title as king of the monsters rather than a god who gets beaten almost all the time. Cthulhu might get an upper hand here and there but in the end Godzilla will eventually come out as the ultimate winner. And sadly we might never see this battle in the film industry but it might be a fight on Death Battle oh by the way, epic artwork!

Well, like ya say- you don't know much about Godzilla. But I don't take sides on this one- I prefer watching people who comment on this piece battle it out. There's no denying that I chose to portray Godzilla as the scrappy underdog here, but I think there are excellent arguments for either winning (which is probably why people continue to have so much interest in this pic).
And just to be pedantic for a sec- Cthulhu's not an Elder God, just their high priest. I made the same mistake when I first posted this, and was put in my place by Lovecraft scholars.
