Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! Nar Gojira kikassen o'uta bed'den, o'snappa!"Translation: "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming. And then Godzilla woke him up, and boy is he pissed."
No, not an IDW cover this time. This is a special piece for the 100th issue of G-FAN Magazine (yes, I broke my "no fanzine" policy again- my bud Matt Frank asked and it was the 100th issue- sue me). Check out G-FAN here: [link]
The idea for this has been kicking around for a while, ever since I saw a gag on Facebook where someone took the poster art for GODZILLA VS. THE THING (which features G fighting off a mass of green tentacles- which is odd, b/c his enemy in the actual movie was Mothra) and replaced the title with "GODZILLA VS. CTHULHU". So that got me thinking how that might actually look if done "properly"- so here's 'Zilla throwing down with everybody's favorite Great Old One off the coast of Innsmouth.
I like to think the guy on the cliff is played by Jeffrey Combs. One guess what book he's holding.

The second issue of CRYPT OF CTHULHU had a pic titled this as their cover. As there was no story in the issue, readers were annoyed, so eventually, a Gozilla vs. Cthulhu story WAS written and published.
It reads just like a typical Godzilla movie (not the reboot in which Godzilla is a menace like the first movie.).

I really can't tell who would win. Sure, Cthulhu's power transcends time and space but so does Godzilla's luck. He has been erased from both time and space and came back from it. Oh well we can all settle on one thing, Godzilla would at least give Cthulhu a hard time.

So many people claim that Cthulhu is some kind of reality-bending god, but never show proof. Lovecraft never says anything like that. Never.

Beautiful realization and visualization of Cthulhu. I always liked Godzilla, it's sad to see him in a doomed situation. He might as well be a promiscuous co-ed headed to summer camp on Friday the thirteenth. He's not leaving this in one piece.

for those of you claiming godzilla wins this fight, you seem to forget that cthulhu is, for intents and purposes, a god from before the dawn of time, who's mere existence weakens reality. It is also worth noting, that what we see in the picture, is just a physical form he made for himself, so destroying it will not defeat him. And, just to add to it, cthulhu is not even the strongest of his pantheon, just the most popular one. And he would still be able to obliterate the planet just by acknowledging its existence.

JoeRB In reply to undeadt-100 [2018-06-18 14:38:06 +0000 UTC]
At no point does Lovecraft (the only author who matters because he MADE Cthulhu) ever claim that Cthulhu can bend reality like that. Cthulhu NEVER bends reality in Lovecraft's stories except telepathically transmitting his dreams across the world.
If Cthulhu can bend reality as you claim, then he wouldn't have fallen to sleep in the first place. If Cthulhu can wipe people from existence with a mere though, then he would have erased all of the Elder Things he fought in Lovecraft's story "At the Mountains of Madness" instead of just warring with them for ages.
And Lovecraft never says, even indirectly, that Cthulhu's presence "weakens" reality.

And yet people seem to forget about Godzilla's immense power. He matched Thor in strength who would murder Cthulhu rather easily. Thor can lift a few sextillion tons and compared him to the Midgard serpent in both power in ferocity. The Midgard Serpent can wrap itself around Earth and crush it, and yet Godzilla was compared to it. Godzilla has matched and fought Gods, he's went through time before and fought the Olympic Gods and he went to hell before and kill Satan.

Well, what's wrong with your argument is the fact that you're combining different Godzillas into one imaginary Godzilla. Which is basically what the stupid IDW comics did anyway, merge all Godzillas into one fan-pandering Chuck Norris Godzilla just to satisfy the power-obsessed fans.
If the original Godzilla can be beaten by a man-made invention, if the Legendary Godzilla can potentially lose when facing two MUTOs, then that means no individual incarnation of Godzilla is as grand as you claim, except maybe possibly the one in the anime films. Haven't seen those.
But anyway, regardless of your argument, the other guy you're arguing with is wrong because Lovecraft never said Cthulhu could bend reality. Lovecraft never said Cthulhu's presence "weakens" reality. Lovecraft never said anything about Cthulhu except properly vague horror terms and the climax in which Cthulhu is beaten by a boat to the face.

Cthulhu is actually fairly hard to define power wise, due to that fact the all the authors who had their claws in him never spoke of them in much detail. Godzilla's powers also change, depending on which version of him you go with. Its why i called it a tie in another discussion, as there is no real way to properly compare them. Again though, people keep forgetting the the shell that lies in R'lyeh might not be his only one...

and regenerated right back up after barely a second. the steamboat was supposed to symbolize how futile humanity's struggle against the old ones is, that there is nothing we can possibly do to stop them. it is also worth noting that the we only see the physical shell crafted for our planet. who to say there isn't something worse hidden away somewhere else in the solar system?

This is a fight, not a philosophical debate. The fact is Cthulhu, not matter how "all powerful" he may be, has zero fighting abilities because he never actually fought anything. There is little we actually know of Cthulhu; one of the things we do know is that he can be injured and his injury came from just a sailboat. Godzilla can do far more damage than that.

if you read the book "a colder war" which is considered canon, then, once cthulhu woke up, they dropped multiple thermonuclear devices on it, and and big c just shrugged it of.

godjacob In reply to undeadt-100 [2015-04-25 16:54:54 +0000 UTC]
Yet a boat injured it. I see that the great Cthulhu's feats are inconsistent; probably a result of "A Colder War" not being written by Lovecraft. Also Godzilla has tanked nuclear bombs as well; hell that is his dinner.
On an unrelated note, I find the concept of Godzilla much more frighting than Cthulhu. Cthulhu represents a threat in the stars that would make humanity small and insignificant, Godzilla represents what humanity could and has done to itself. Nuclear destruction was and is a legitimate fear humanity has and Godzilla is a walking reminder of humanity's folly.

I've noticed similarities to Godzilla and Cthulhu. Both are brought out by mankind's desire for more knowledge and power, both are worshiped by a sacrificial race of people(see Odo Island), both monsters embody powers that we humans can't understand. I think in order to make a good Godzilla story, you need to not only create human drama brought about by nuclear weapons, but also understand HP Lovecraft's style of horror. I don't think they did that in the original Gojira, but the film felt pretty similar to something Lovecraft would write about if he lived during the atomic age.
