I don't do tutorial requests.Made this for my own personal reference, since I keep forgetting these steps.

Interesting. I've never used a "clipping mask" I'll have to try it.

Yup! They're very useful for non-destructive editing.
(or if you ever wanna go back and make edits to just the shaded portions, and not ruin the "flat colors" layer.)

Ah! Do you flood fill the "flat color" layer and you're painting the mask then?

Yes.
Two separate layers.
One for the flats.
And the other for the shading.
Making it a clipping mask lets you "color inside the lines," without having to re-select everything.

Hmmm... tried it. I can honestly say I can't figure out what it's doing! I use seperate layers too. But what exactly the clipping mask is actually accomplishing, I can't tell.
