I just set the blending mode to "multiply" on my line art. I find the resulting lines are cleaner than if I lift them via selection.

Yup! The "multiply" trick is much faster.
That was my main go-to for a few years.
Had to start doing this though, once I wanted colored line art, or since certain coloring methods get messed up from multiply layers.

Huh, as long as the line art is strictly b/w I never had a mixing problem. But I expect if the lines have any color, then other techniques become necessary.

Don't be mistaken:
This is only to SEPARATE the lineart from the background layer (if they are merged).
It does nothing to help clean up messy lines.
Still gotta do that manually.
