Description
By the end of the great crusades’ first century, it became apparent to the 11th legion that their fleet of Basilisk self-propelled guns had become dated. Its 132-mm (5.1 in) howitzer lacked the range needed for modern combat. The lack of an enclosed crew compartment left its crew vulnerable to shrapnel and the elements.
The 11th found a replacement for the Basilisk during the campaigns in Segmentum Pacificus; Amongst the many STCs, the legion had recovered during that operation. The STC in question was a tracked vehicle with a 155-mm (6.1 in) howitzer in an enclosed turret with NBC protection.
The 11th then handed the STC readout to the legion-sworn Forgeworld of Keihanshin for testing. After 40 years of technical and practical tests, the new self-propelled gun entered service with the 11th legion as the 155-mm Type 30 self-propelled howitzer. It became known as the Paladin, as other space marine legions adopted it.
Over the next 400 years, the 11th constantly refined the Paladin. These included but were not limited to increasing the barrel length from 23-caliber to 58-caliber, increased ammunition from 22 to 40 rounds, and better multi-fuel engines.
