yeah, it's from a long rectangle, not from a square, but one single piece

Great work and a very cool-looking snake.

a quick estimate of the number of scales:
I counted somewhere around 125 rows and guess maybe an average of 15 scales per ring, which would mean 1875, give or take however many I am off by.

If I go by what it must have felt like when making it, I would say: several million?

very close guess! great work!
and yeah, it can get very repetitive, but if you love what you're doing... XD

I am actually thinking of making another snake one of those days, a gaboon viper. probably my most favourite snake ever. i love their wide head and complex skin pattern. if i ever get that one done, I'll need a much wider paper, about three times as wide as the paper I used here, so three times as many scales for that one and three times as much work. I must be insane, right? well, maybe i am!

A great model. Something tells me there's a logical way to count the scales since you can count the number of scales in each triangular row and look to see where the rows grow longer, but it wouldn't be fun without taking a complete shot in the dark!

My guess: 1796!

well, you have to take into account that for this to exist, i had to fold the old version, unfold it, and fold it !differently for the update... XD thats why this particular one took so long. also, i am a slow folder... XD

I looked it over, ran the numbers through my head, double checked online, did a few simulations and have come to the firm conclusion that the snake has nine scales. 9.

So, what did I win?

it's actually way more than that, but you win humour points

Okay. At least I got humor points.

PeteriDish In reply to Archipithecus [2014-06-08 07:26:42 +0000 UTC]

well, this was just for funsies anyway, I don't have anything planned for the winner. I don't even know how I would make something like that work, i don't even know if people would be interested. origami contests would probably result in an origami comission and the finished model would be sent to the winner by mail, but then again, people might be reluctant giving their adress to a guy they don't know, but mail is the only way how i can send an actual origami model to someone else, it would be bullshit to request an origami model and end up not actually having it. like i said, I don't know how to make that work, or if that'd be something people would be interested in.
