I just run the dodge/burn tool up and down the hair length with varying intensities, then use the smudge tool the same way. It is a great technique! Thanks for the nice comments and the collect! ^^

i don't know if you'll be able to help me with this, but i have been having a problem saving my gimp picture onto my computer. i thought i did the lineart part right (it's a drawing i did and scanned) but whenever i try to save it onto my comp, the lineart has disppeared and it looks very sloppy, even though my colored picture in gimp looks very clean.
i tried to flatten the image, i tried to merge the layers down, and i've tried to save it as different file types. but i'm new to gimp and i have no idea what i'm doing
if you could help me figure this out i will bow at your feet lol
thank you

Well, it sounds like you need to save it in GIMP's format, ".xcf" try that! This should save it exactly as you left it!

okay i tried to save it that way but then when i went to look at it, it only shows a blank piece of paper with the gimp dog logo on it. it that how it's supposed to look?

Sorry! I just had to reply to this!
Do you see the blank peice of paper with the GIMP logo on it in you pictures folder? If so, just double click on it and the GIMP will open it for you!

That tutorial is awesome!!! Just one question, whenever I use the fuzzy select tool, it either selects all of my lines, or it selects the entire layer. Do you know what I am doing wrong?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pheona In reply to guidedoglover [2008-05-17 20:06:01 +0000 UTC]
OK, first make sue that you are on the correct layer. You want to be on the layer that has just the lineart. Make sure you click in the space where you want to color, not on the lines. Also, make sure that the threshold is set to a low number (under 10). Hopefully this helps, but please feel free to ask any more questions if you need help ^^

guidedoglover In reply to pheona [2008-05-18 01:42:44 +0000 UTC]
Wait. Aren't you supposed to create a new layer before you use fuzzy select? Or, do you just color on the line art layer?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pheona In reply to guidedoglover [2008-05-18 03:09:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you need a new layer for each color. after you make the selection on the lineart layer, just move to the new layer before filling in the selection

Actually, I have some questions:
1. Can this also work with Wacom Tutorial's photoshop?
2. When you mean the fuzzy tool, do u mean the magic wand?
3. I try to cell-color the lineart but it came out "messy"(the fuzzy white lines showed up). I read-over ur directions on how to color it the way u did by using the magic wand but it came out the same, know what i mean? Actually, I don't have the "select transparent area" button so maybe that's why.
4. How did u do that effect on the hair(at the bottom right)?
Sorry, if i asked too many questions but, just wanted to be sure if i did it wrong or not

pheona In reply to skittles713 [2008-05-12 18:31:31 +0000 UTC]
1. I'm not sure if it will work with the Wacom Tutorial, because I don't really know what that is
2. Yes
3. there are many reasons why this might be happening. If your lines are too thin, you might be coloring past them after you grow the selection. Try using thicker lines, or making sure that you do not 'grow' the selection any more than 1px. Also, reduce the threshold on the fuzzy select tool to a small number (under 10). the "select transparent area" is in the box below the tools (tool dialogue box) when you have the fuzzy select tool selected. It should be there
4. I used a bunch of colors and ran the brush (with my mouse) up and down the length of her hair, then used the smear brush to smush it around, then blurred it with the convolve tool a bit.
I hope that helps, and you cannot ask too many questions, so please feel free to ask me anything else you need.

umm....actually, i sort've need help again.
Okay, ever since i download GIMP, i followed ur directions on the fuzzy tool thing but after when i made a new layer(named it "skin) and tried to fill the color in, nothing happens, it's just blank.
am i doing something wrong?

pheona In reply to skittles713 [2008-05-12 23:56:18 +0000 UTC]
Hmm. You need to make sure that you are on the right layer (make sure you click on it so the layer in the dialogue box is blue, that means it is selected) when you fill in the selection. Also, make sure that you have the right area selected and that it is, in fact, selected. If you still have a problem, note me or contact me on windows messenger (pheonax@msn.com) or Gmail (pheonax@gmail.com) chat so I can explain things more clearly.

This tut is really nice and thought out.
I just have one question; when I color, etc, the color is there, but there are little pixels of white and such around the edges. >.> It's really annoying.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pheona In reply to Wario-WAFT [2008-04-14 03:14:29 +0000 UTC]
Hmm... this could be your lineart. Was it originally a scanned picture? Also, the coloring might be going outside the lineart. Either way, just use the eraser tool and erase the "white pixels". Oh, and if you forget to 'grow' the selection before filling in the color, that could be the result as well ^^

what do you mean by 'layering' each shade? do i give a new layer for each shading thing?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pheona In reply to FriedIceCream [2008-04-08 02:13:33 +0000 UTC]
Nope, just use a lot of different shades (that is, gradents of color) to make it smoother, like I show in the picture

um i'm on the burn /dodge/blur part, but when i try to burn the thing, nothing happens. can you explain more carefully to me?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pheona In reply to FriedIceCream [2008-03-30 00:48:25 +0000 UTC]
Make sure that you don't have anything selected (that often happens to me). If there is still nothing, be sure "burn" and "shadows" are selected, make sure the opacity is up, and the rate is up as well. For using the convolve tool, again, be sure there is nothing selected and make sure "blur" is selected and the opacity and rate is up. I hope that helps ^^
