EDIT 10/02/15: If you're doing inktober I strongly recommend you to take a look at this tutorial! I've been getting a ton of questions that can be answered here c:

EDIT 10/05/2015: Fehnryr suggested an amazing site for editing your traditional art pics if you want an alternative from photoshop & softwares. Use www.ribbet.com/  to raise contrasts, make colors pop and make your pics as great as the real life drawings! Thank you Fehryr for the suggestion!!

EDIT 10/04/2016: It's that time of the year again! how are your inktobers going?

Thank you so much for this! I've started drawing recently (going really well so far), I've only been doing sketches since I don't know how to line. But now thanks to you I can start, going to go and try this out today on my old drawings.
Thanks again, I love you.

Awesome tips! Thank you for sharing

It makes so much more sense now why inking pens are often bundled with different sizes in a pack. Your Totoro example really showed the importance in varying line thicknesses.

Thank you for making this tutorial, I've read it several times but I have got to be the worst drawer/ inker ever.
My 2 main problems is I can never make my lines look "professional" / finished and my line weight is always terrible. I hear people say go fast, and go slow. I've tried every variation of speed and my lines still look like garbage. I've drawn with using my elbow and still no dice in line quality. And I have no clue on how you would even begin on making textures in inking.
When I try to make my lines look clean it just looks like a coloring book and when I go for a more complex look, the picture just looks confusing. Shakey lines are my bane and I've tried all those exersizes for months and still no improvement.
My photohsop lines are the worst. Not only shakey, the brushes lines never look right. The lines either too pointy, shakey, no variation and down right unappealing. Even when I put a correct stroke, it never looks as good as everyone elses lines, its hard to explain but very easy to notice their bad. I've never seen anyone else share this problem.

I understand your busy but I'd really appreciate any help on inking. I've tried everything and I've been doing this for years and I'm not seeing much if not any improvement.

Hi there!
I don't know if this is a good advice or if I'm good enough to give any tips (my lines aren't usually very good), but I've found it easier to make lively lines by using a lettering pen (one that is thicker the other way, like this: static2.jetpens.com/images/a/0… ). It automatically adds that contrast between line thickness, even if maybe not in the exactly right places. That's why it's probably not good for too detailed or small things. I've used it here: peilinsirpale.deviantart.com/a…
It's a cheat way to do it, but still might make something look a lot better than it would look like with even lines

But of course, the thing I've found the most important (=most helpful) is to not stress too much about the outcome. It surely won't look exactly like I imagined, but whatever! It will still look good enough if I just do my best (and if it doesn't, whatever. I wasn't just ready for that yet.).
And also doing a small "practice" thing before the real thing to train your hand to the movement might help. For example, I lined a weird clumsy hand before that headshot. That hand is definitely not good enough to show, but it helped to get into the flow of drawing

I hope my thoughts will be of some help

Thank you so much for the advice! Although I don't have the same pen I do have many other pens that have a similar tip.
A piece of advice I recently came across that helped me out was to take lineart that you really liked and trace some of the lines, but not the whole image. Keep trying until your line is almost exactly like the original, and don't go out to get a pretty picture. The point is to  try to get your hand have the feel for how fast, what pressure, etc the pen should go to get a professional looking line and get that into your muscle memory. Its helped me out some and thought you might find it useful as well.
