What these people need is skills and supplies to grow crops and raise animals for food.
Do we give them that?
Nope. We give them more useless paper.

Bonfire of the Assholes
The reason why our poor Ethiopian friend is struggling,
to work out how to cook a book for dinner is as follows:
It is because the assholes who run his country don’t give a shit about him because they are enjoying the power they have.
Revelling in their status as gods, who rule by the power of the gun, they have fabulous facilities where they can enjoy torturing, humiliating and killing, a poor family’s beloved father, brother, son etc. (Girls can avoid torture by rape and mutilation – so much better).
And these assholes pretend, they are fighting nastier assholes, who are enjoying their status as gods who rule by the power of the gun, actually getting off on killing, raping and mutilating people for a sick ideology that they forgot what it was, and probably haven’t been laid for a long time.
And of course not to mention that our original assholes are living well off the funds that other bigger assholes than themselves have provided to kill above mentioned nastier assholes.
These bigger assholes are themselves enjoying their status as gods who rule by the power of bigger and fancier guns - so they can fight other bigger assholes like themselves who have very similar bigger and fancier guns.
This is done of course, indirectly through our original asshole participants in our dialogue (Sorry, should I say monologue) - in order that their citizens can avoid the inconvenience of having their children’s arms and legs blown off.
Naturally these bigger assholes have provided the funds to ‘help’ these impoverished people and oops! Didn’t notice how terrible it is that that naughty dictator forgot to put it in the right account, because he was too busy being a ‘good’ and friendly neighbour in the region.
What I forgot to mention is that our bigger assholes don't actually have the money they are using to fund those assholes. They are borrowing it from some very rich assholes, who are enjoying the whole show and reveling being gods by the power of the gun, through the weapons they are selling to all our assholes.
In the meantime the populations of these aforementioned bigger assholes with bigger guns,
feel terrible about all of this.
But they do believe that somehow it will all work out in the end, when everybody realizes that peace is the best way. And they nobly try do their bit by contributing to organisations that are pissing in the wind.
What they fail to recognise, is that all of these various levels of assholes know that peace is the best way, but don't give a shit, because they are all busy getting off on, whatever type of asshollery they are currently enjoying.
In the meantime various idiots like myself and all above posters of self-righteousness (Obviously highly intellectual personages) spend hours on-line discussing and ravaging each other, because our - obviously correct ideology – means that the personage of – obviously incorrect ideology – must be an asshole.
And in all of this, our poor Ethiopian brother still hasn’t got past ‘The Fall of Man’
But if he only persists he will come to ‘Exodus’ where he will learn that if he is one of the chosen people, God will provide Manna from above, which of course he can cook on a Burning Bush, which he will have to climb up a high hill in the dessert and fast for forty days and forty nights.
Unfortunately for him, he isn’t one of the chosen people, so he won’t be getting any Manna, and all the bushes have already been burnt to cook whatever food he didn’t have in the first place. The other issue is that there aren’t any mountains in the vast wastelands that he lives in, but the consolation is that he is in the dessert and he almost certainly has done a lot of fasting recently .
And just as he is thanking God for all of this, he can hear the sound of a flatbed Toyota pimped up with a heavy machine gun being driven by several nasty assholes, wearing bandanas, high on something, looking for a bit of entertainment and a nice chat with his wife.
But don’t worry he will be fine!
He has got a Bible and the good people on Deviant Art to protect him.
But the truly amazing thing is that we are discussing all of this because one person drew a picture!
We don't know if he is an asshole or not, but he has put himself out there and expressed his obviously - correct or incorrect - ideology, depending on where you stand.
But there is one thing that I am sure all of us can agree;
HE IS A FUCKING BRILLIANT ARTIST !!!!
Thank you,
Alexander Asshole Musset.
btw, I am nice and idealistic really, and write humorous poetry for kids/adults. Please come and visit me so I may lighten up your day a little, after all this depressing asshollery.

Many Christians give to charities specifically to help fight against hunger and starvation. If you think it foolish to build a facility that teaches good will, then what about schools? Schools can be helpful, but what could they immediately do for impoverished societies such as Ethiopia? If you want to get technical about human needs, all anyone really needs is basic survival skills and knowledge of agriculture, irrigation, and obtaining clean water.
You say religion is "carrot and stick", but those who do good deeds are often rewarded regardless of religion. If you donate to charity, people will respect you more. The more credibility you build for yourself, the more favors you can ask for in return. I've seen atheist personalities on the internet give to charity, and later ask their followers for financial support. Giving to charity increases your public image, and likelihood you may get things in return.
Animals can't return the favor. Instead of focusing constantly on human issues, what about animal rights? There are plenty of non-religious persons who are not shy about killing and eating animals. Big name atheists such as the Amazing Atheist, Penn and Teller, are not vegans. Richard Dawkins recently said he would like to be a vegetarian, but isn't one currently. Science has concluded that meat is bad for human health and the environment. Christianity has always taught that it's better not to kill or eat meat. There are even verses in the Bible which speak against pollution.
You don't have to be religious to have morals, but those who have a system are more likely to follow it, than those who act on a whim. So which communities are you and your fellow atheists active in? Gay rights, gender equality, race relations, the fight against poverty, environmentalism, veganism, the organic industry, health education? Which do you frequently participate in?

Funny, because most conservative Christians I know are really big on meat. You know, middle-of-the countr, gun-toting, hunting, bacon-loving type of people. And I speak from experience considering more than half of my very large, very religious family fits this to a T.
In fact, in my experience (you know, actual experience, not just one or two douche bag people who got famous - I for one hate Amazing Atheist because he's a misogynistic asshole), pagans and atheists are FAR more like to be vegan/vegetarian than Christians, especially Protestant Christians. Most pagan religions are expressly vegan, actually.
AND DON'T YOU FUCKING SAY CHRISTIANS ARE ACTIVISTS WHEN IT COMES TO GAY RIGHTS. DON'T YOU EVEN FUCKING TRY. Yeah, there are Christians who support gay rights, but they are certainly NOT the majority. Atheists and agnostics are much more involved in that, mainly because many of them are actually gay, and have left Christianity BECAUSE YOUR RELIGION TREATS THEM LIKE SHIT AND TELLS THEM THEY WILL BURN IN HELL.
And gender equality you say? That's rich, coming from a religion where women are expected to naturally be submissive to their husbands. There are passages in the Bible where the punishment for rape is the man has to marry the woman he raped and pay her father. Women could be stoned to death if their fathers couldn't prove that they were virgins on their wedding night - Bible-endorsed murder and misogyny! And also, isn't Christianity the religion where women are taught to be seen and not heard? Don't believe me? "1 Timothy 2:11-12: A woman should learn quietness and full submission. I do not permit women to teach or assume authority over a man; she must be quiet." Oh yeah, that totally sounds pro-women.
And HEALTH EDUCATION? Do you mean abstinence education? Because that's what most conservative Christian organizations advocate, despite the fact that states with abstinence-only education have much higher rates of teen pregnancy and STDs.
And race relations? Funny, I seem to recall white Christian pastors justifying slavery by pointing to passages in the Bible that said that a servant's only way to heaven was through obedience to his master. Yes, the SLCC was Christian, but it was made up exclusively of black pastors. Don't go pretending that white churches
As for myself, an agnostic vegan lesbian (as in, a conservative man's nightmare), I'm actively involved in gay rights, gender equality, and animal welfare. I consistently advocate COMPREHENSIVE health education, and would love to run for office some day and start working on reforming the foster care system in our country. I've also been to rural China to help build a schoolhouse - SURPRISINGLY, the people were happier with that than a church - and my ATHEIST mother volunteered in both Haiti and Japan after their recent natural disasters. And by volunteered I don't mean she went and prayed over people and told the dying that they should convert because all hope for their life was lost but they could at least get to heaven. I mean she actually HELPED, because she's a pediatric nurse and several people from her hospital - PEOPLE FROM MULTIPLE RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS - went because they wanted to save lives, not convert people.

I get it...but it makes me sad. Whereas the Word of God can help many people maybe we should give them more urgent things like food, water, shelter, more efficient methods of farming/industry etc first. Religion, though nice it is, can't solve everything...not just by building churches and handing out Bibles like they are leaflets...

pitnerd In reply to DelarosaDX [2013-10-02 21:29:42 +0000 UTC]
I don't think religion solves a damn thing. While I can appreciate what you're getting at, I think giving food, water, and shelter under the pretense that they accept christ as their savior is disgusting. I hate religion. I don't hate the individuals within. I believe their hearts are in the right place and they do achieve helping people, however corrupted it is by cultism.
Giving to others and doing good because some deity tells you to by enticing with the reward of eternal bliss or extremely painful infinite punishment doesn't compare to people who simply give and do good because it's the right thing to do. It's the proverbial carrot and the stick.
Do good, because it helps other people and makes you feel good too. Nothing wrong with that at all, and there is absolutely no need, or any room for that matter, for a god.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, sincerely.

Well, I'm a Christian but...I rarely think about Heaven and Hell...I do good things to try and stop people's suffering...I've adopted a very liberal view on the way Christianity affects me, meaning I am not tied down to the "classical" rules and go about how I feel it should be approached. I think people who shove it down others' throats are just plain wrong...and wars about religion? C'mon people! Just fucking co-exist.

High five! I'm a Liberal Catholic… Well actually Socialist Catholic.
Anyways I believe religion has a time and a place, but not within a starving community. I sometimes cringe when I hear people say, 'Pray for the People in Japan' or something along those lines; because praying isn't doing. I've volunteered my time to people in need including the CAP agency and even to a homeless shelter, but I have severe anger towards people who pray and forget about families in need.
The biggest hypocrites, I believe, are the Religious Right and Conservatives in the deep south. They are hypocrites because they believe in extreme free market Capitalism, which has been the cause of many economical wars and imperialism. And all of it is for the 'Will of God'.
I find that this art presents a clear image of Religious Hypocrites who praise Jesus, but don't live his teachings. If Jesus was anything, he was a person who hated wealth and only cared for his fellow man.

I hope you enjoy living in the past. Yes, I understand that religion is not perfect, the only thing I am uncomfortable with is the outdated depiction of the Ethiopian people.
The people who send Bibles and their own version of religion to this region are neglecting the ancient form of Christianity that has existed for just as long as the ones in the 'west.'

It would be one thing if the church was raising money to feed people in Ethiopia, but obviously they're going to have an ulterior motive. That ulterior motive being to spread their religion there.
