As in, Matthew 8:21 refers not to dead people but to people who are spiritually dead. Practically, if you have Earthly relations (or loose ends), you can not really follow Jesus.

This one is a little disagreeable. The interpretation was to give up everything and give up reality to follow Jesus. Also Jesus represents a new society devoted to man rather than wealth.
Granted the bible is old and this message made sense in that time alone. Sometimes I still think the bible has some good things to say, and then⦠this.

I can roll with that for sure. There's truth everywhere, even the bible. I remember a proverb that says something like, "the man who works with his hands sleeps better at night." At this time that was an astute observation and in the 21st century we know this to be true. A person who labors physically may not like doing it but it works the body and naturally exercises muscle while stimulating blood flow. I sit a computer almost all day and has contributed to insomnia which creates anxiety and depression due to poor circulation causing me to feel sluggish and unmotivated to exercise. The anxiety causes insomnia, and the cycle continues. That's a good thing I read in the bible.
As far as this goes, I personally don't think it's even a real story, but rather an allegory intended by the original author to be an object lesson, just as you described. My problem with it is that it's NOT read that way by literalists and fundamentalist. So by their interpretation, Jesus was a dick for not at least saying he was sorry the guys father died. Instead he tells him to let dead people bury themselves. In a literal reading, JESUS WAS A DICK.

Okay, now that I'm on a computer, here goes.
I live in a Catholic family and I attended a Catholic school for a while, and when that didn't work out (ie, the school staff wasn't practicing "Christian love"), I then had to attend Suday school. This whole idea, Jesus demanding people to leave their family, is a familiar concept. This picture reminds me of the issues I always had with how demanding Jesus could be. It never sat well with me that one was expected drop their friends and family to follow him, but I was told you should be happy to do so since Jesus was the son of God and all. I just wonder why it is at a child could see through this bullshit, yet grown adults couldn't.

Excellent observation. It doesn't seem to map on to reality does it. So either he was attempting to make a point about spiritually dead people or some such nonsense (and you'd really have to stretch it), but he still did not actually address this poor man's situation of needing to bury his father. Perhaps he literally thought dead people could do that, in which one could conclude he was mad (which pretty much falls in line with all the other mad evidence and wild claims of supernatural power and authority over death). OR he's an amalgam of multiple savior and "sons of god" types of that era all wrapped up in the concept figure of "Jesus Christ" and this is just a made up story used for good by some, and wielded by opportunist for their own personal gain by many, many, many others.Β
