I think that one group of individuals went to the jungles and trees, wanting to stay secluded, which separated the groups of people from the common ancestor. This caused monkeys that we know today.

The other group preferred the ground and to be more agile in running across open plains and hills, etc. Β This is where humans broke off (at least the very primitive form).

That's my basic idea of what happened.

A similar thing could've happened with mermaids (if they exist) with individuals who desired to be in the water.

It reminds me of my question of what would happen if bread became sentient, would white bread enslave brown wholewheat loaf? would baguettes surrender at the first sign of invasion from Pumpernickel? WHO KNOWS MAN!... who knows...
