The Amalekites attacked the people of Israel without provocation while they were wandering in the desert. The Amalekites intended to kill the Israelites and talke their stuff, because the Israelites were not Amalekites. Naturally the Israelites would hold a grudge against the people who tried this. If we ARE trying to give the matter a fair reading (Exodus 17:8-15 NIV)--- Yes, the Amalekites DID attack the Hebrews unprovoked. Motivation was undefined. The Israelites retaliated the following day. And as long as Moses held up his hand, the tide of battle was in their favour.
The "genocide command" in this story was "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.' / Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, 'For hands were lifted up to the throne of the Lord. The Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation".
And yes, agreed with you. It was pretty much just another incident of ancient, tribe-on-tribe warfare. A dispute over territory and resources.
And yes, agreed with ryu238 down below, NO, it wasn't worth killing all of them. And this is hardly the only God-sanctioned genocide in the Bible. But if you look at it from the wider perspective... tragic, yes, but mass murder and razing of settlements was pretty much standard practice in ancient warfare.
And to everybody concerned, I dare say, if we want others to listen to us, it pays to be polite. Can't we have a simple, civil discussion?
