Description

Edit: 3/12/2019-Update 5.0

Matteo got new sleeves in black, to make his coat more cohesive. This is also to bring him more in line with a lot of the artwork of him. His lower arms also were revisited. His blades now attach on differently.

I smoothed out his torso. Its now mostly dark red with the exception for the chest. Like in the artwork Hashiara did, its supposed to be an embroidered waistcoat.

He has a new belt. I didn't like Matteo's old belt, it was cumbersome and weird, plus Lego made this new zipline part in gold. This one is modeled more after medieval belts where the slack draped down past the buckle(think Game of Thrones belts).

I removed the tasset from his waist. It was a little unnecessary and cluttered up the overall look. I initially added it to splash more red in, but I decided I didn't like it.

About The MOC

Matteo is what I consider to be my official Self-MOC. He is by far my most developed character of any of my MOCs, currently assembled or otherwise. He's also my personal favorite and most worked on my, which was why he became my Self-MOC Matteo represents an old Plague Doctor . This was also what he was called before I gave him a name.

The idea I've tried to instill within this MOC was practicality, antiquity, and style. All of his accessories were meant to be as realistic as possible, while retaining a theme that Matteo is an old fashioned kind of person with his own sense of style. While I can't date any specific period he is supposed to represent in MOC form I do know that all his artifacts predate modern technology and probably predates 19th century technology as well. I would place the artifacts on his person from around 14th-18th century.

A little about his character
Matteo is an immortal, a survivor of a race of Ancient people who found a method to cease aging and gain physical attributes that were wiped out through genocide. Matteo is immortal in the sense that he does not age, and has a certain resilience to diseases and injury, though he still could be killed by most conventional methods(shot or pierced through the head, burned, etc). These attributes have allowed Matteo to survive where most others would have died. This also made him excellent as an Apothecary during a plague as he was always immune to it, or at worst experienced some sickness, but not enough to kill him. Matteo's biography is quite extensive, and as a result I don't quite have it all mapped or figured out. Everything I do know I have learned through the help of collaboratiors, naimly Acyrotin where he appears as a main character in her series, Witching Hour , and collaborating with wolfbossx. He helped early on in figuring out who Matteo is and a lot of Matteo's origin story came from collaborating with Jake. I can assure you though it is quite a tale to be told.

Thanks for the Critique. The back spikes are gone now. I've updated the photo. Were you reviewing the old or new picture?

First, let's start off this critique just by saying this thing is pure genius.

The engineering is put together in such a way that none of the joints look loose or unstable, except the shoulder connectors, which should have a bit more bulk on them.

The anatomy of the MOC looks nice, clean, and makes sense, except for the shoulder connectors, the wrists, and ankles. Those need work.

The hat looks nice. REAL nice, and original. It's really hard to be original when using a skrall shield as a hat, and it's really hard to avoid it looking like a crappy Chinese straw hat, or the hat from that one guy from Mortal Kombat.

Now we move on to the real reason this MOC gets a good rating. The accessories are flowing with life and genius engineering. They really make this character stand out from the crowd of black and red generic MOCs. But, not is all well in the accessory department.

The accessories should be the pretty frills on the cake, not the frosting. The cake itself should look and taste nice before you start shining it up. This...Well, without the accessories it only looks kind of unique. This MOC really needs the accessories to look good, and that's not a good thing. It shouldn't have to rely on them. The base MOC comes first.

Yes, it needs work, but no MOC is perfect. It looks great, and earns the rating I give it.

Hey there Magith. I'll accept this Critique. And if you'd like to go back and redo the one for Wretched Stare and not quote a bunch of others, I'll allow that to. I denied it because I felt it was biased.

So the fact that this is the first bionicle plague doctor doesn't register at all with you? Yes it is. WHen i built him, no one else had done one, and I still don't think anyone else has. You google "Bionicle Plague Doctor" and it all refers to something I did. The fact that you only talk about the build itself is a little irksome. But oh well. Thanks for the critique.

this one is better than hyde, but i still dont see this as being a decent moc.

Vision:
the vision here is nice, but that big cheesy watch looks turrible and the overall moc is not... good

Originality:
as far as i know, there arent many witch doctor mocs, but characters and concepts for mocs are almost endless, so that doesnt count for much, and the skeleton is looking similar to alot of mocs ive seen in the past.

Technique:
the build is too simple here; the skeleton with double jointed knees and elbows are ok, but you didnt do much in the way of armoring to compensate for the large joints; you should have tried to partially cover them or directly armor them in my opinion. the armor on this one is sub par, and boring, the armor gives no interesting shape and serves as nothing but "filler" the feet are overlly simple, the hand pieces on the hips are bare and lazy looking, and the arms are WAY too simple; those forearms could not be more simple, and the upper arms dont really fit the theme of the moc. the shape is bad, and the moc is far too simple; please work on more complicated, intricate designs.

Impact:
it was ok, but again i was all: " dayum these shapes be turrrrrrrrrible"

sorry, man, but this is not an average moc, its actually well below average

That moment when some one gives an art piece 2 stars, and it receives a DD.

Also the little things you had against it are nothing compared to the atrocious spelling you have. I don't know much about MOC ,but I know that this is definitely better than any thing I could build free hand.

Ok, this critic did not take account that every little piece where it is laid is original.
So what if he has a elbow/knee joint system! Every good looking humanoid does!
I have small quells with the MOC myself; logical quells. But the MOC doesn't get two bloody stars because of them.

First, I'd like to say that I'm taking study time to do this critique so you better be happy. x'D

Alright, Matteo has been going through updates frequently, however, his overall appearance hasn't changed so he's been actually improved, not revamped. That's something that Dave's got going there. The various assortments are cool with little intricate designs that help it pop out instead of blend in with Matteo. His design is indeed more unique than many other MOCs out there, especially in terms of mascot characters due to his more unorthodox style and shape. The techniques used suit him well and certainly go out of the normal compared to many other self MOCs using pieces originally intended for other purposes effectively as a different purpose, such as a metru forearm and a glatorian hand. His head design continues to be a central piece of him due to its unique nature of being a plague doctor's mask, a feat not commonly reached by other creators. Although the impact from Matteo is obvious as he is more so of a wise character, it is not easily seen by watchers who haven't any experience with MOCs.

Overall, he's pretty much a MOC with a lot of originality and detail that deserves a good amount of attention.

K, hope you guys like my critique. xD

I appreciate the apology, but you really shouldn't go around to people's stuff and promote your own things. That's a dick thing to do and it really doesn't help your case. Because it comes off as you trying to use my follower base or acclaim for your  own benefit, and you aren't really engaging with me or the post. You didn't say anything about the MOC at all.

A better way to go about it would be to send people Notes or maybe comment on their front page that you would like some advice. But to comment on deviations and only talk about your project comes off as scummy. I'm glad you apologized, but just be aware of how that might seem to the people who's posts you're commenting on next time.

Yeah. I originally built Matteo back in 2010, and I've slowly upgraded him over the years.

I don't mean literally 8 years, working on him every day, but yeah it took 8 years of pulling him off the shelf and reworking things I didn't like about him to go from that old picture I linked to what he is today.

this is without a doubt one of the greatest and most original lego creations i've seen.  so cool and macabre.  the idea of a bionicle plague doctor just sounds so unique.  Matteo himself sounds like an interesting character.  maybe i'll check out the story.  if i can find it.

What a delightful comment to wake up to! Thank you. I'm glad you like him, I've poured a lot of love and attention into this figure and character.

The story is kinda scattered and isn't really solidified yet. I kinda have it in my head as I world build and sort out the timeline, but I haven't posted a definitive story. Basically he's an immortal, but instead of being "Young and beautiful for eternity™" like typical, he's eternally 52. so a middleaged/old man(comparatively to their times 52 was old).

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to FloridanPhotographer [2017-12-11 00:04:23 +0000 UTC]

You definitely want as good a presentation as you can get. Its not terribly difficult to get it though. A blank backdrop with some large sheets of paper or cloth and a couple of desk lamps is all you really need. Posterboard and desk lamps can be gotten for pretty cheap at Walmart.

Lego is a curious medium. You're representing a 3D object in a 2D medium so clutterd backdrops and bad lighting can make it hard for your viewers to see what's going on. I'm also a big fan of multiple angles because it helps show the viewer the parts. One photo can really obscure what's happening or play tricks due to perspective. Some MOCers do this whole "Only from the best angles" nonsense. But my philosophy is that if it can't look good from all angles, then what's the point? Its a MOC its a sculpture its a 3D piece of art, show it that way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FloridanPhotographer In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2017-12-11 01:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. For the longest while with MOCs, Bionicle or not, I've just been using whatever backdrop I can get. (I have a nighttime city backdrop from a old Lego Studios set, so that works at times, but with Bionicle you need something else. Perhaps, until I get posterboard or something of the like, I can just use a natural background like bushes or something.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to FloridanPhotographer [2017-12-12 15:29:54 +0000 UTC]

That could work for a temporary solution. But it could also cause a lot of clutter and confusion. For starters you could also just use a blank wall towards the floor. In my early days I just hung up a sheet tacked to the wall.

Oooooooh, I see you finally added him the clothing he deserves!Really like how he looks with them, the clothing gives him a more smooth and mysteryous look. It's hard to get a decent cover with a MOC of this size using clothes, but you have done a nice work here, specially considering you can see he wears different layers of clothes. Great improvements, dear!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to GoldenArpeggio [2017-07-25 10:19:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The MOC itself was always meant to synthesize clothing. Like Matteo's legs are supposed to look like he's wearing trousers. His upper half is a little more confusing but I've always pictured it as a long sleeve dark red shirt with a red filigree shirt over top of it. The actual fabric elements now help to add additional layers on top of what's already there.
