Yes, I got my first period at 11, but my body started to change shape when I was 9.
Despite this, i developed slower than the other kids. Many girls bodies started to change at 12 or 13 and in one year they already looked almost like adult women, while my body started to change when I was 9, and at 15 I still looked in the middle of changement.

That's because the puberty starts a few years before your actual menestration cycle.
Typically, before your period comes you will start growing boobs and your hips will start to be more noticable but the change isn't at the same time for everybody.
Sometimes the change is quick, like yours and sometimes its a slow and gradual thing for years.
The change will continue until you're 21, sometimes growth seems to stop but it can start up again but it typically ends at 21.
At 25, your body will then start transforming again as this is when wrinkles, and etc first start occuring as the body stops producing certain hormones and etc. For most transitions are very slow, I am almost 30 and I still don't have wrinkles thank god.

This is greta, although I must say an average 50 woman's body doesn't look as great and firm as that one, it should be already more loose the skin.

It depends on how fit/healthy someone is as well as genetics, not everyone who is 50+ has saggy skin. Some people are extremely cut, and the only way you know they are elderly is their hair color at times. (some don't even have many defined wrinkles)

This is great! It is nice to see how you've shown different character and personality traits in this overall progression. One can almost intuit the personality of each stage (or individual if it were a cast of characters and not a progression) just by body type and hair style alone. Really excellent work. You do really great body language even though your character is standing still and forward-facing.
It just kills me how many people seem to want it to be realistic, even though it is so obviously stylized. I guess they've never seen an anime before?
again, superb reference!

While it's a cool process, this is pretty misguided once you start going 'downwards'.
Biggest problem is that you shortened her bones. Even with stylization such as your's, it makes no sense for her shins and other long bones to shorten like that, especially as you seemed to try drawing a natural process.
Old people look shorter because they are often hunched, as you drew, not because they bones shrink, as you also drew.
Body type changes, and I really like how you did that, but height, not so much.

QueenLilSis In reply to neonUFO [2015-05-11 17:04:47 +0000 UTC]
It's heavily stylized is what it is. It is obviously not realistic at all. A 3-year-old is fully half the size of an average adult female, not barely coming to mid-thigh. Neither will you grow an entire head length between 11 and 16, or half a head between 16 and 30 (though it looks as if the 30-year-old is wearing heels). Also, you can't get those waist measurements without being heavily corseted. If you want it to be realistic, there is much more wrong that you've already stated.
However, this reference is obviously not about realism, but characterization.

Yeah some of us stay smaller I guess. I hit 5'4" and about 105 lbs at 13 and just stayed there forever. I'm 26 now and there's no difference, although I'm sad to say my face looks a bit older now.

It depends from what age you have your first period, and what size you were when it happened.
Women that still grow even after 20's are usually women that have their periods later, or women that, when they have their periods, are very small (like 1,48 at the age of 14)
I was slightly tall for my age until 11, then i had my first periods. And I grew just other 7 cm in the following two years.

You usually grow up until ~20-25. Even with 18 your body is not adult yet even if the offical law sais different.
Of course that can differ vastly between humans.

I know that's true for boys/men, but I always thought women slowed growth and stopped altogether within a couple years of getting their period for the first time. All of my girl friends stopped growing by the middle of high school, but maybe I just surround myself with tiny people lol

Taelune In reply to AliceSacco [2015-05-11 18:17:00 +0000 UTC]
Correct, men on average don't stop growing until they are in their mid twenties, women generally stop growing in their LATE teens, early twenties, but brain growth for all humans on average doesn't completely developed until the average age of 25.
I started puberty when I was 11-12ish, but I didn't reach my full height until I was about 17-18ish.

Sorry to everyone about this subject, but almost no woman achieves those legs/body proportions in their 30s in the first place XD
Let's just remember that this is one reference, that each and every single woman is unique, and that this is the personal style of the artist ;D its in no way an axiom.

I understand you were trying to make a reference towards the subject of the picture, and weren't paying attention to what I was implying to the OP of this topic. Also , it is best to not use passive-aggressive tendencies if you want to be taken seriously, saying "Whatever" is nothing but dismissive and rude.

I started puberty quite early, at 9.
At 13, I already reached my full height.
I saw few girls keep growing until they were 18 (but most stopped to grow at 14).

AliceSacco In reply to Taelune [2015-05-13 10:13:26 +0000 UTC]
I see.
I learned this by observation and experience. I asked the size time by time to see if there were even small differences. I noticed when people shorter than me became taller than me. Usually there were none for girls, while for males there were differences of 5 or 6 cm. occasionally even 10.
I saw few girls growing even after 20's like boys.
One of my friends became taller than me at 21, another classmate I had, was always average in her size until her early adulthood. Now she's tall.
But most girls I meet stopped to grow between puberty and early teens.

Taelune In reply to AliceSacco [2015-05-13 19:03:21 +0000 UTC]
It also depends on genetics, environment, etc. I had a massive growth-spurt when I was 13, but I was still growing until I was near 18 (If we're just talking about height), most of the people that were raised in my town were around a similar height range per gender, but if you went say in the Midwest where my husband was raised most of the men and women were a lot taller.
Men start puberty (on average) later than women so their growth spurts were probably more noticeable, but when you look at early junior high most of the girls are taller or of a similar height to their male counterparts. Growth-spurts do not mean you stop growing (in height) though. It is just more noticeable that way. I hadn't realized I had grown an extra inch from freshman year till right after graduation until I was measured at the Doctor's office. (Since when you're an adult you get a new Primary Care Manager than when you're younger)
But AVERAGE females do have their growth-spurts earlier than males, but this does not mean that they are done growing (It also depends on the individual)
Some people also start puberty later than Average, or specific parts of it (Meaning a girl can have developed breasts, but not get taller until later for example)
So yes, one small area of study (such as your school) is not the national average. :3 That is the point I'm trying to make, and that also there are a lot of other variables. (I do think instead of using specific ages the Artist should have used general age groups though, so that people wouldn't have this confused about splitting hairs. )

I also thought the same, but I as well stopped to think more about it and agree on every person is different to the rest, and also this is just a reference, a base start and of course, in the style of the artist. And a very good work indeed

It's not my style, it's Japanese style. They usually show grannies as high as adult's calf. I don't know why, maybe because it seems cute? and everything they do is supposed to be cute.

manga is about efficiency : how to convey the "feel" about the character in the most direct way, with the less lines possible (like a zen approach)
by being short and crouched, you know it's a "very old character".
It's true in many art, even movies. For example, think about Yoda: everything in his shape was about to make you understand visually he was a very very very ancient and wise exotic teacher.
The point is : it's for characterization, not "cuteness".
