Description Just a little electrocuted Derpy to perch atop my mystical orb of fate's destiny.
Made entirely from Creall Do & Dry modeling paste, the cloud is a big wad of aluminium foil covered in the same. Painted with Acrylic paint and varnish. Eyelashes are paper, painted black. A grounding wire is attached to the back of the cloud, so it looks like there's always lightning coming from it.

Fun fact! If you place a conductive metallic mass with a large surface area (like a ball of aluminium foil sculpted to look like a cloud) on top of a plasma ball, It basically acts like a capacitor and stores a considerable static charge, as well as generating a lot of heat. The discharge caused by touching such an item may cause mild electric shock, burns to the skin and, more importantly, to your precious sculpture that you just painted and now have to touch up again. Argh! Oh well, live and learn. The smell of burning flesh is proof that science is being done!

So yeah, I'm not selling this one. Firstly because I don't want to get sued for electrocuting anyone, and secondly because IT IS AWESOME AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT! Trololololo!

This is an ingenious idea! Do you think there would be any danger of electric shock if there were no metal in the sculpt? Would the bolts still touch the sculpt if there were no metal? Just asking because I'd like to try to recreate this sculpt. I have a plasma ball just lying around & I figure I'd give this a shot sometime..

Should probably work without the tin foil. The lightning seems to strike the clay as often as the foil. I think the important part is the grounding wire. Tie that to a radiator or something and you should be safe from zapping. Without the grounding, the cloud attracts less lightning, anyway.

Hmm, interesting. Thanks so much for the input! I'm trying to avoid any shocking whatsoever.. I wonder if I added rubber suction cups to the bottom of the sculpt to hold it onto the glass if that would eliminate the shock factor? The sculpture being in direct contact with the glass conducts the electricity? or is it the grounding wire?

Epic Science Tiems! Note that the glass itself does not conduct electricity. It functions similar to the dielectric in a capacitor: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacito... It's the surface area and material of the conductor Β (in this case the sculpt) that determines the size of the charge it accumulates. (Tin foil = BAD) But that also determines how much lightning it attracts.Β Safest thing is to dispose of that charge safely by means of a wire attatched to something grounded. That would both increase lightning strikes and eliminate shocks. Said wire would not nessessarily have to touch the glass directly. You could even use that wire to power something small like a little lightbulb for Bonus Sciences!

Having said that, the rubber suction cups would serve only to reduce the amount of lightning strikes, or prevent them completely. In my case the acrylic paint I used for the cloud is tacky enough when dry to keep the sculpt from sliding off. But if you really want to keep it on there, I suggest Glue DotsΒ www.gluedots.com/glue.html or some suitable generic equivalent.

Ah! YAY SCIENCE! Thanks again! This is definitely helpful! Now all I need is some extra time to try this out! XDΒ

Putting it on the plasma ball (aside from the whole electrocution/flesh burning side-effect thing) was just brilliant. It looks great.
