Description CHAPTER 2 IS OUT. [HERE IT IS.]

-

[Firstly, I should mention that deviantART is ANNOYING because it doesn't let you specify the preferred dimensions of Flash files; therefore this is WAY too small! It's shown bigger on my site, here: [link]

-

I am EXTREMELY happy with this!
It's a Flash game that I made entirely by myself! Essentially everything in it is by me; the graphics (vectors AND rasters), story, coding, music, that planet... The only thing I didn't make is the sound effects; I got those from some free sound effects websites years ago, but I don't know which ones specifically because I've had the sounds on my computer for years!

Anyway, this is an RPG. Instructions are provided within.

I'd GREATLY appreciate it if you'd give me GOOD feedback; that it, something a bit more than just "this is cool"! I DID spend countless hours of this, y'know, and it'd be good to know what people think of it.

MARDEK will be a series of 8 chapters; this is the first, introductory one, and as such it's rather short (for an RPG). The others will be several times longer.

Anyway, tell me what you think!! (Especially about the music!)

-

Oh, and I made this (Fig Hunter Games is my own site), but it was *sponsored* oh so kindly by [link]
They paid me money, so give them a visit!

This is an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC game! I love the dialogue too. XP "OH DEAR I HAVE BEEN SLAIN". LOVE. That gay shopkeeper is gorgeous.

I'm SO faving this game.

P.S. ADORE the music. It's fabulous! Brilliant RPG music.
P.P.S. Your website doesn't load.

Well, you've requested encouraging commentations, so I shall give them to you. (Considering I loved the game, I only have one negative comment, which is trival, really. The mouse moved a bit sluggishly for me, though I'm too lazy to change the graphics setting to see if that helps )

I simply looove this game! I'm a big fan of TBS games, 'older' stye games, and good ol' fashioned comic relief.
"Don't you mean WE wll rule the galaxy?" "Yes, that's what I SAID. Weren't you listening?" "No, I wasn't, not at all. I had this amazing little tune running through my mind..."
The story reminds me of several games I've played in the past (mostly the part about starting out with super-hero-like characters and then flashbacking/turning out to be pretending), the combat system makes me think of Final Fantasy (No, not claiming that's where you got it), and the comedy is fresh and made me laugh quite hard a few times. (Though admittedly that's not hard to do lol)

(Scale of 0.0 to 10.0)
Story and dialogue: 9.0 Comments: Inventive, very funny, nostalgic of some other games.

Combat: 9.0 Comments: I especially enjoyed the 'Action and Reaction Abilities' and how they went by rather fast, meaning you had to have quick reflexes to use. Pace was fast (Which is good IMO). Easy to use and understand. Reminds me a bit of Final Fantasy games.

Graphics: 9.5 Comments: By today's standards the graphics are sub-par, but this isn't that type of game. In my opinion, the graphics couldn't be better. In the old days when this type of game was popular, you were lucky to make your character look like anything more then bunch of dots, let alone express emotions and quirkes like you've done.

Overall: 9.0 Comments: While at first glance this game would seem like all the other flash games: nothing more then a simple distraction, upon playing the game, you'll find it's anything but. Funny dialogue, good involving story, very fun combat and abilities, great graphics and audio. Amazing job, I cannot wait to play the sequels!!
To be honest I've been wanting to do something like this for some time, but was too lazy to lol.
I'm happy someone knows how to do it right.

This game is nicely done, it'll be while before I can get close to something like this in Flash.
PS-The link came up as "Too many redirects" (links using links to get to the referred page) but it's still playable on dA, and that's good.

I saw this on Newgrounds a month or two ago and just thought WOW. This is amazing. The introduction is creative, and I love the way the story's progressing so far. You must, must, must release that second one soon! This game is great!

SPOILERS

I love how you used two kids imaginations as the introduction. Of course they were top-notch do everything handsome warriors, 'cause that's what every fantasy-loving kid is.
It's great how they just kind of snap out of their imagination playtime and into the real-world.
The fourth wall-breaking is great! (I. E. Those adventurers, just going into random people's houses!)
It's nice how it's all pixel-ish, but you have the animated characters with the expressions.\
The spaceship- never saw it coming! Sci-fi+woodlands village is really original!

You, sir, have a well-designed and well-plotted game. I hope to watch Deugan and Mardek as they grow up.

I really really loved this. I think, if nothing else, it was your witty humor that sold me. I couldn't stop laughing the entire time. I loved how well you captured the little boys personalities, especially the girls are icky part. I also loved the strange adventuring words and the usual "well what do they actually mean?" comments that gamers have, as well as the way your characters made comments about the game. I liked that the game gave me the feel of just about every game I loved as a kid (Zelda, Pokemon, Final Fantasy...) and whether that was intential or not, it got smiles. I also love the dilects of all your characters, and the humor at the usual RPG stories. I'm really really excited for the next chapter, and I usually hate online and flash games.

I also liked the art. I think pixel fit your story and style so much better than more detailed would have. it gives us a better view of the world, and lets face it, pixel is probably less time consuming to do than really detailed animation, hunh?

I can see you really put a lot of time and heart and energy into this, and it really paid off. Your personality shines through, and its great to see you did ALL that on your own. I really really can't wait for another installment.

It's clear that you spent a lot of time on this. This thing is amazing, it hearkens back to the old days of the SNES.

My only complaint thus far? I can't figure out the Reaction Commands for the life of me. I don't know if it's my poor reflexes or not understanding them or what. A better tutorial on how they work would have been nice.

*Played through the whole first chapter*
I am pleased to say I immensely enjoyed that! The dialogue was hilarious, and it was fun looking at all the pixels, which is something I do prefer over 3D graphics, because pixels are oldschool. The music is pretty nifty as well. Can't wait to see the next chapters. Well than, tally-ho!

This was the coolness! Amazing! I could see all the hard work put into it. Once the storyline kicked in I started sitting up in my seat. I find it original and very interesting. At first when I saw the actual pixel game play I was kind of sighing, but now that I got past the dragon and finished this chapter it makes me want to play more. Not a bad game at all!

HowlingRiot [2007-07-13 09:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Having made an RPG myself too (in C++ though), I can really appreciate this one. It's nice to see how much is possible in flash.
The graphics, although funny in old-school appearance, are a little too undetailed to my liking. The animated faces in the conversation screen are a nice touch.
The music may not be very complex, but they don't get annoying at all, and the one in the castle suits the level quite well.
The battle interface could use some tweaking: It is a rather odd mix to use arrow keys in the levels, yet only a mouse in the battle screen, limited to pressing on-screen buttons. I'd say; if you're going to use a mouse, let people click on their target instead of on-screen buttons, or show keyboard keys next to the "attack" etc. options. I liked the "x" key symbol in the conversation screens a lot. very clear.

Thanks for the option to save it to my computer. I'll enjoy it some more later.

One programming comment: when a door in the town is "locked", and you press the x button to end the message, the message continues to appear until you walk away from the door. I use a "now the player is still keeping the button pressed"-toggle variable for such things.

I don't suppose I could ask you to make a tune for a DDR-ish flash game I'm making? ^^

there are a few glitches when you're in Gonzor and you go up to the buildings. when i hit "X" to clear the message/dialogue box, it just keeps coming up until i click on it.

so that was a technical critique, and now for an enjoyment critique.

i loved it! it was so cute and fun! i love how pixelated it all is, and that just adds that little extra something. so good job! and i hope to see the other 7 chapters of this soon. ♥

Alright, first of all, this is a hugely amazing project you've undertaken. I applaud you. For the dialogue, I give you 100 out of 10 >D< (the green guy was REALLY CREEPY, how'd you do that?)
For my part playing the game, I find it a bit hard for the transition between mouse and keyboard (might be because of my playing on a laptop). Perhaps you could include the choice of all using the keyboard all the time?

smilie-terrorist In reply to ??? [2007-07-08 11:12:52 +0000 UTC]

This is a great game so far! The music complements the game perfectly, it's not too loud or annoying, which is great. The graphics are just right for an RPG when walking around, so nothing is slowed down, and the animation in the fight scenes is very smooth and controlled.
I also like the fact that you've put in the Help and Options sections - most Flash games I've seen don't have those, and they help a LOT.
The way that the random monsters appear is very reminiscent of the way Pokemon appear in the Game Boy games, but it's very wise that you bring up a varying number of monsters rather than just one, because then it really gives you something to do and won't annoy you as much as the Pokemon do ^^
Finally (^^), the way the characters interact with each other is marvellous. I've never actually come across an RPG game where the characters actually talk to each other from time to time. Usually, like in the case of Mario for example, all the characters say is "thank you for rescuing me!!" and then leave it at that. But the part at the beginning with all the 'tally-ho!'s was very amusing. I also found it quite amusing that the main characters could actually attack each other rather than the monsters XDDD

So overall, a great game, and I look forward to any sequels!!

Tally-ho! That was a lot of fun! The intro was really nice, forgot some things like the use of the X-key once in a while, then I decided to write it down (sorry, lol, I'm not so bright late in the evening). And since then, it worked out quite well. Thanks for making this, it was really, really entertaining, I laughed myself to death while beating the monsters.

Elaihr [2007-07-06 10:43:35 +0000 UTC]

To be completely honest, I could not wait for the bad weather to set in, so I played it now. But then, to make you perhaps a bit disappointed or something, my stupid mother came here to interrupt me and tell me that I had to work. Which is completely true, I'm in quite a big need of money. However, I can still tell you what I think about it this far.

First, the music. I am not very good at commenting at music, to be honest, but I'll try. I think you did a great job with it, the rythms and notes suited the situations perfectly, and I liked the fact that there was a difference depending on where you went and stuff. It would have been SO boring if it didn't.

And then I just have to say that I completely love how Deugan and Mardek look, I really like the graphics over all! It is not, as you say, completely great and new and fashionable and that sort of things, but it suits the game really, really well, I must say that it would have been a bit boring if you made them "perfect" like.. WoW style or something. I think this is what flashgames should be like. And also, that there was a plot! Most flashgames are just like.. Shoot kittens or smash balloons, not much of a plot in any of them. It's a lot more interesting when there is a purpose of the game, if you see what I mean. I guess you do.

And the dialouges! They made me laugh, oh my, that was just great. It would have been a bit plain if it would've been all serious and no fun at all, but thank you very much for not letting that happen.

Oh, it was a happy surprise to see some of your deviations in the game as well, I didn't know that you'd use them like this. Very, very nice. Damn, I sound so lame.. O.o Sorry.

And well, critique... Ehm. Must think..

It would have been easier to give you critique if I would've played the entire game (which I will, because I enjoyed it very much), but.. I just hope that enemies will be a bit harder to beat than the dragon in the beginning. Not like I have any clue yet, but I'll see, I'll see.. STUPID MUM.

BUT THANK YOU FOR PLAYING MY GAME AND STUFF! Yes, I'm glad you did so now you know what I'm actually referring to when I say I'm working on it and stuff!
I wonder though... Did it surprise you in what it was like? Was it the sort of thing you were expecting...?
(I've known people before who, when I say "play my Flash game!" to them, groan because they think it WILL be like... shoot kittens or something. Since MOST Flash games are, after all...)

Elaihr In reply to Pseudolonewolf [2007-07-13 10:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Since I know you quite well, I didn't think it would be very much of that shooting kittens stuff. And since I played your Ortek flyer (you know how I am with names..), I sort of thought that it would be somewhat alike that. I can't say I was extremely surprised, no, and if I was, it was a good surprise. Hm, it was actually quite alike that Ortek flyer game, but there was more of a plot in this one, and that made it a bit more interesting, to be honest. Ah, well..
