Keep in mind that platforming in Sonic games only got better when Sega used less of it over time. By the time Sonic 3 comes out, you're mostly jumping over obstacles then platforming. But there's still no focus on action when most platforming games were filled with action.


At least with and action game, combat and engagement is enhanced but so is everything you could usually do in a platformer.

Modern Sonic's idea of combat is boosting into an enemy to me. From what I've observed from the current games which makes me wonder if combat should even be that much of a larger issue as it seems they can't find a consistent tone.

Just because there's one issue, one I've spoken on countless times, doesn't mean others can't be examined. Plus, I think Forces proved (slightly) fixing the tone and nothing else doesn't go a long way.

I didn't mean the tone of the game I meant the tone of the combat and how it is supposed to mesh with the ingredients of speed and platforming. Also I said nothing about it not being able to be examined just that in general combat isn't a heavy part of most Sonic games unless we are talking about Shadow, Boom Ris of Lyric, Sonic Heroes, The Mech stages of the Adventure games, etc.

Never heard tone referred to combat, then saying if combat should be an issue if they can't get the tone right. Sounds like you were saying combat shouldn't be an issue if the tone isn't right, so it through me off.


Anyway, I'm very aware combat isn't a heavy part of most Sonic game, but what else do you have when the platforming portion of the game either hurts the speed or has to be non-existent. You would just be seeing how fast you can run through levels, spectacle, something most games already have with more going for them. It's the notion that combat SHOULD be a larger issue to shakes things up and do more then just running. There's not much else to do, and I don't evne count boosting as combat, it's just faster running.

That's more of what could have been but we've seen what Sega thinks combat meshed with speed and platforming is with Sonic Forces. They either try to keep it as a separate part or clumsily try to slam the three together. To me the best way they did this is with the Adventure series as they had characters prioritize different styles of gameplay that don't trip over each other or disrupt each other for something completely different. As much as I love Heroes' soundtrack and presentation it has the worse way of implementing it's new style of gameplay even for the first outing of a team based gameplay. You slam into parts that require a character to do a specific task way too often and while it is alleviate by upgrading a character the game wants you to do that style of gameplay for that task which is what I'm talking about with combat in a Sonic game. The core of speedy characters is platforming and speed and with this current idea of 3D Sonic they want the momentum to keep going so combat boils down to keep the speed going making it less of a feature (You see this with stepping stone enemies serving to sort of break the speed in order to destroy something in your way but at the same time it's still focusing more on the speed aspect as it's a diluted form of combat that is here to accentuate speed).

But this all depends on the style of game which is why I say the Adventure games got it right because speed isn't as aggressive as it is now where the developers think everything needs to push forward momentum

Action games in general, though I recently did play through Dungeons and Dragons and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, to capcom arcade games, recently. Played through Final Fantasy 15 last year, that shit was dope.

I've played several TMNT games, but never did finish the first arcade game, I did with Turtles in Time though, and those 2 fighting games form the genesis and snes. I'm not big on Double Dragon but I got that one 3D game via Xbox live, beat Super DD a few times, and Battletoads and Double Dragon.


Ooh, speaking of Battletoads, I play their arcade game in full every once in a while, I love that game.
