Pleasantly surprised to have it as a DD! Thanks to everyone who has or will fave this. I've tried to thank you all personally on your pages but dA thinks I'm spamming so I'm afraid I can't although I have thanked about 200 deviants here. I will however, respond to all comments on this video.

Running Free is the accumulation of six weeks of intense filming and editing, blood, pain, joy, sweat, fear and above all things, pure freedom.

So often people see free running as something other than an art, Running Free tries to break that idea by giving you a first person account of the art.

The film was born when I happened to mention to my friend, David Stewart, that I was a keen free runner, he mentioned to me that he was a keen film maker, the two minds clicked and we decided to make this film. We spent two weeks writing scripts and coming up with ideas and concepts but we just came out with rubbish. So we decided to just film some footage of me free running and that's when the penny dropped, how could we possibly come up with an idea for a film about something so free? We continued to film for three weeks till I sustained an injury to my coccyx (you can see the accident at 1:35) which put me out of action for a number of weeks. In this time we met up to chat about the film and David had the idea to interview me. I had not planned any of what I was going to say which I think really works for the film, it's a free runner talking about free running in a very honest, off the cuff way. The track, Burial by Forgive just seemed to feel right when we put it in the film and there were no questions as to whether it should be in the film or not.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the film. Our friends who helped critique the first drafts. Hyperdub for giving us permission to use the music free of charge. William Bevan for writing Forgive; seriously, a better track for the video could never be found. Phil Hunter for teaching me what free running was all about. And finally, spontaneity, for giving us brilliant audio for the video.

All filming was done by David Stewart, I co-directed the video with him and the free runner was myself. Copyright is under both our names.

Permission was granted by Hyperdub to use the track, Forgive by Burial in the film in September 2009.

I never really saw free running as a legitimate sport. But after seeing this my mind has been drastically changed! Beautifully shot and said. Love it!

Interesting, how come you didn't see it as a legitimate sport? Glad this was what changed your mind!

Some of your editing is too tight for clear viewing, doubles over and is of a different tempo to the rest of the film.

You have taken a number of quite nice shots, what camera are you using?

Wow, first negative criticism! Thanks , am being honest there, I like it when people find error with my work. I think the tight editing is to kind of reflect the speed of what is happening in the video, even to the onlooker, you can miss what's happening when a free runner runs.

rhysie21 In reply to pyro-tom [2010-02-14 10:15:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but it was inconsistent. There was no buildup and pull down, it was slow and smooth to quick and snappy instantly, and it didn't really work considering it was no more than we had just been seeing.
Some of the audio in parts wasn't particularly great, either. It was too soft or something, I'm not sure.
I liked the fact that you included the falls, too, but at times they did seem out of place.

the thing i love about this film is the clean and simple theme it's based on. You only here the boy talking about something he likes and you see him do it. Very simple, but done right, it can be powerful

You used a technique of socalled 'stills' wich i am fan of. There are no extreme effects in this film and nothing is overdone, you could almost say it was made in Windows Moviemaker l0l xD, that doesn't say it's a bad film, hell no, you have done extremely well.

this shot is the strongest of the whole film, the technique lighting and composition are good enoug for a photo, and the field of depth changing with the movement of the boy, that my friend is a masterpiece ^^

Forgive by Burial. Tis a beautiful piece and it just sums up how free running makes me feel.

It's surprisingly different from all of Burial's other stuff, but that's the nature of his music, it's all different.

i agree with your words!

i am not a freerunner, but i admire those who are. and you're definitely right about how it's not to look cool, but it's indeed a lifestyle.. a discipline. something you can't fully appreciate once you actually set your mind to it. but once you do, it's a great feeling, a feeling of not being tied down by society and the world and to just be ..free.

thank you for the aspiring video. <3
