Description This was a prize in the Benders Vs Bronies competition held on reddit. The winner wanted a line art painting.

Gradients are difficult.

Vector by

EDIT: Some more info since this became a Daily Deviation.

Don't like it? [link]

The piece is a stencil painting made from a vector from the show. It is acrylic spray paint on 12x12 canvas.

All told, it took about 2 or 3 hours to make.

The photo isn't the best quality because I took it at night with a crappy camera so I could show the person who commissioned the piece the final result. I post my work to DA so that other people can enjoy the work that I do.

I understand that some people don't like MLP, and that is totally fine. I am also more than open to critique of my work. Complaining that a piece of art has a subject matter which you don't like is very childish. I am not making this for anyone but the commissioner and for myself as a project to spend an afternoon relaxing.

Before 10/8, I had heard the term Daily Deviation just once or twice. I had no idea how they were picked or anything. I am glad that I was picked because more people can see my art, which is always cool to me. I am disappointed that so many people are dropping negative comments here because it is not up to some standard they expect in a daily or because of the content.

I do want to thank everyone who has taken the time to look through my gallery and favorite some of my work. Painting is just a hobby for me that I got swept up in. Seeing other people like my work is always cool.

Oh, I know there are. But I think this is still deserving of a DD on the grounds that the DD is made to recognize people who may not have that much recognition and gain them some more followers.

Is this fanart? Yeah. But then there are a lot of fanart pieces that get DDs. Some people seem to have a problem with the fact that it's MLP. Well, that really makes no sense either to me. I mean, it's still quality work. I can find no fault in the execution; even the best paintings done with spraybombs have overspray, but I'm not seeing any.

Poo-pooing it just because it's MLP is reactionary and stupid. One person below has something like "dA used to be my haven before MLP." To that, I can only respond with: Hey dude, see this> .

That's the world's tiniest violin playing "My Heart Bleeds For You."

Pardon me, I think you misread my comment. I don't think you understand that it's just TOO much and seeing a pony art EVERY single time when I can tell there are other mediums to use such talent on.

I ADORE such techniques like this: all I WAS saying, before you rudely paraphrased my comment, that I wish the the dA staff would look at other things too ASIDES from the ponies.

So please; do me a favor and READ before you take things out of context.

Thank you so much dear sir/madame.

You also have a rather poor grasp of English, apparently.

Nowhere did I paraphrase you. I responded.

Also, the context is irrelevant. You decided to post something rude and, frankly, obtuse, and it was my prerogative to respond in kind. It's not like you had a 50 page dissertation on the subject of fan art from which I took a paragraph and twisted the words to make them say what I want them to say. You had an eighteen word post, nineteen if you count the emoticon, and again, I merely responded.

Finally, "mediums" is not only a misuse of the word, as it implies that you lied about appreciating the use of spraypaint when I think you meant genre, which has to do with the type of subject being portrayed, but the word is actually "media".

See? If I want to be nasty, I can be nasty. So do ME a favor and think before you type.

They DO look at other things besides pony art. In the last few weeks I've seen Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and myriad fantasy works appear as DDs, some of which I didn't think deserved it (the current Doctor Who playing card piece? Meh . . .). But you don't see me going to their pages and plastering them with hateful or negative remarks. It would be unbecoming of an artist to do so.

And I did read you comment. My fault was in not interpreting enough hatred into it. I assumed you might be only concerned with the technique, as you seem quite reasonable, and not whether there were too many pony-related artworks on dA.

Yeah, I mean I'm not a brony or what ever it's called, I understand people like different things and that's fine. To me the piece of work just seems... bland- but we all view art differently and this isn't the first DD I've felt this way before. You do have a point though, for a spray painting I can't see any over sprays of spill overs. I guess my final judgement would be like: work done was amazing, almost no errors, but the actual piece as art? I just find it boring to look at, I don't get pulled in and want to look at it more.

"My Heart Bleeds For You" on the world's tiniest violin- love the sympathy lol

I completely understand. I actually find it a bit dull to look at, to be honest, but in my opinion, it is made up for by the technique. I don't see spraypaint used very often except by certain artists, and then the only thing they do with it is landscape (and in one case planetscape, or whatever you call space art). But that's my opinion. I'm also happy to see less popular artists getting a spotlight. Plenty of times I've clicked on a DD only to find that I'd seen that artist before several times in that category. It's a bit refreshing to see someone who I don't recognize get a little time in the limelight. It shouldn't be just for great art, though that certainly needs to be a strong factor. A DD should serve to put someone with talent in the spotlight long enough for the person to gain a small following so they might attract attention and perhaps sell some prints.

Yeah, I have to admit, I stole that from a friend of mine here at college. I knew it would come in handy someday.

You're right, there are a lot of unknown artists on here- it's nice some of them get to get recognized. I guess when I think of DDs I think more of a piece of work that would make me go "Wow, that's amazing!" and not really think about the popularity of the artist... I'll definitely take that into account when looking at DDs next time.

MillenniumFalsehood In reply to fotojoe94 [2012-10-10 09:06:21 +0000 UTC]

I actually catch myself thinking that a lot. A few months ago I decided to read the rules for the selection of a DD, mainly to see if I could actually submit my art for review for that (turns out you can; imagine that). The mission statement of the DD caught my eye, which is basically what I said about giving weight toward the popularity of the artist.

It was interesting talking with you!

I'm not trying to hate on anyone who watches the show most of them are probably amazing people. I just don't understand why it's so popular. I mean it's a childrens show. I guess I'm just not into that kinda thing but to each his own I suppose.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MillenniumFalsehood In reply to Horrorgirl135 [2012-10-09 17:13:28 +0000 UTC]

Hey man, that's cool! I actually sympathize, because I was exactly the same way before I started liking the show. I mean, it's a kid's show, right? For little girls. What's up with that? I figured, "Meh, to each his own."

But I gave it a try after a friend here insisted that it was awesome, and I actually liked it. My main attractions are the references and the fact that the writers have a great sense of humor. Believe me, there have been multiple times where I have said to myself, "Oh man, I can't believe I like MLP." But I'm a big sci-fi fan, and they've done a shot-for-shot homage to the end of Star Wars, one of the villains is basically Q from Star Trek, Doctor Who is a background character, and Twilight Sparkle dresses up like Solid Snake at one point (and makes a great Terminator reference). I'm also in a scientific field, and in that same episode they correctly write all the basic time dilation equations on Twilight's chalkboard. It's not something they had to do, but it was a nice shoutout to those of us who work hard trying to learn and understand the underpinnings of the universe, and it actually fit the context of the episode.

I hope that helps you understand why at least I like it. The characters IMO are great, but those references and the humor just really appeal to me, because I get 99% of the jokes, even the ones that go over most people's heads (there is an awesome music theory joke in the last episode of the second season, for instance, that nobody outside the music community would ever get, but it's in there). The writers, including the guys who compose the music, really go above and beyond, and I just have to hand it to them for doing that.

Trust me, I dislike those guys as much as I do the haters. They not only give bronies a bad name but miss one of the core values that the show tries to instill in its viewers: that everyone has different personalities and likes and dislikes, and not everyone has the same point of view, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Just out of curiosity, do you participate in any fandoms?

Pretty cool! Loki had a pretty awesome set of armor in the movie, though I think I'd like to cosplay as Iron Man, mainly because I'm an engineering major.

I've also been trying to slim down so I can fit into a set of Stormtrooper armor. I'd like to join the 501st Stormtrooper Legion and attend some of their charity events. They're a really cool organization, donating tons of time and money to charities and non-profits. Bronies for Good is another organization I'm considering joining, as they do a lot of awesome things, like raising money and building farms for less fortunate communities in other countries. I'm already a member of Engineers Without Borders, but I like giving of myself.

Yep. That's actually one of my "secret weapons" to use against haters, of both series. They usually say something about how bronies are just pussies or Star Wars fans are a bunch of weird nerds, and then I mention BfG or the 501st, which makes them look like a jerk because they're dissing a group of people who are trying to give back to the world in some small way (fun fact: Bronies for Good actually managed to raise $40,000 in two days for a construction project in Guatemala, I believe ).

I realize this comment is old, but I really want to reply. Because as weird as it sounds, drawing ponies did challenge me. Unlike what you think they really did challenge me to draw differently, helped me find a style I actually liked and overall improved my art immensely. Example before ponies: [link] and just 6 months later of drawing ponies: [link] I would have eventually reached this level with practice but not as quickly had I not received so much feedback and helpful tips as I did whilst in the MLP community.
