it was a little flimsy. it's the right size, but if you can find something stronger you would be able to 'fight' with it.

Hmm...I'm trying to see if there's some way I can re-enforce the paper towel roll since I like the roundness of it. xD
I guess I could always stuff putty into it or something but that seems ridiculous. Gonna keep brain storming.

Just finished the discs...gonna cut out the sword body now.

Thanks!

maybe a dowel inside of it?
not sure how expensive those things are..

WTH I totally just responded to this. xD If this comes up as a double post...derp.

Anyways, I wrapped the paper towel in several layers of duct tape, and it seems to be pretty sturdy. Once I finish the sword base I'ma gonna see if it's too flimsy or not. If it is I'm thinking to reenforce it with clay / plaster...problem is I just don't have a lot and nothing to sand it with. xD

Actually...taking another look at this...how did you do the double blade? I want to do something similar, and I saw someone used a whirly sort of method where the full blade spins into place (the model reminds me of a jack knife. However this leaves the sides...open...and I wanted to use a sliding method but didn't see that would be possible without springs (again, limited resources where I am ><). But it looks like that's what you did...somehow...or am I tripping...?

Anyways thanks for the replies~ B)
So excited for this thing you don't even know.

i created a simple set of rails on the inside (just with the foam board, no metal) and added two little tabs on the bottom of the blade that slide inside it. it can be pulled out by hand or if you 'swipe' the blade hard enough it'll fall out, but it's not so secure anymore (from over-use lol!) i don't have any fancy whirly-doodles lol!

the record does spin if you drag your finger along it, but again, it's held in with just a nail. i kept things as rudimentary as possible!

Yup. There's the double post. xD

Actually looking at your "blueprints" they're pretty different from mine...might need to re-draw, since I really like the idea of sliding. xD
Brilliant, no metal. Yes. But I'm a little confused on how you did it...So if you have the full blade inside and turn the sword upside down, will it fall out? Like it just slides along the grooves?

Thanks again so much! :3

pyrogina In reply to Mantamus [2012-11-06 06:56:35 +0000 UTC]

you just have to vary the widths of the board. largest on the outside, smallest on the inside; with a small little piece at the very top to stop the blade from falling out completley.

Mantamus In reply to pyrogina [2012-11-06 07:02:00 +0000 UTC]

Okay so then how do you keep it from falling back inside once it's out and you have the sword turned right side up? That was the part I thought you'd need springs for...
Been staring at this doodle on this printer paper for like hours...xD
Thanks so much again. You've really helped me come up with some good ideas.

pyrogina In reply to Mantamus [2012-11-06 19:33:22 +0000 UTC]

hmm i didn't really do anything special to keep it in place, it was just snug. like, i made he boards just tight enough that the blade would stay snug.
sorry! i don't really know how to explain it other than that :<

Mantamus In reply to pyrogina [2012-11-18 10:37:39 +0000 UTC]

I used a pin and some tape since I figured no one would see the back anyways. xD

Anyways thanks so much! I love how the sword turned out, and it's the biggest cosplay prop I've made to date! I was very happy with it~ And the people at the con really liked it, too. All the sleepless nights paid off! Thanks!

Unfortunately I had to dismantle it to take it on the train / bus.
But I am re-assembling it for Comic Con with added support. The needles were a bit flimsy so I'm gonna add wood to back them.

But again, thanks so much for the help!

Mantamus In reply to Mantamus [2012-11-06 07:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Actually...I was just thinking about it...what if you had a small pin or something that could poke through the poster boar and hold the blade in place whenever it was out? I think that might be an idea...

>< Totally just brain-stormed on your DA.

I wrapped it in several layers of duct tape and it seems to be pretty sturdy. Once I finish the sword body I'm gonna check to see whether it's too flimsy. If it is I'm considering to use clay / plaster to re-enforce it...but I just don't have a lot on me atm.

Anyways, the project continues! Thanks for responding to my derpiness. xD

This is pretty awesome, amazing work.
Quick question though, how'd you get the "Fixed Caledscratch" blade to stay? Hope you don't mind if I borrow your list of materials to try and make one for a cosplay I'm doing of Dave.

pyrogina In reply to Dagomir69 [2012-01-29 18:28:17 +0000 UTC]

lulz! it was moving too easily, so i folded up a dishtowel and jammed it in there!

Dagomir69 In reply to pyrogina [2012-01-29 18:32:50 +0000 UTC]

Clever...hm...I may tweak it a bit to see if I can get it to click in place or something. I must ponder this. Thanks for the answer, and for the amazing work on the prop.

I love the tubing, all of its amazing, my only beef would be that it might not be to durable. And you could probably have used a real mini record.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pyrogina In reply to ageshero [2011-10-13 02:59:32 +0000 UTC]

the tubing is more durable than the foam board. but this wasn't built for LARPing, just for show.

ageshero In reply to pyrogina [2011-10-13 04:23:59 +0000 UTC]

Well i didnt mean LARPING, lol which always sounds funny, erm, sorry.

I mean like film quality prop making, im always in love with the gadgets and props in movies, what if this had that soft white Portal gun sort of quality to it? i dont know its possible to do that unless you have really amazing equipment, but if its a real passion Pyro, GO FOR IT.

I'm just wondering, what are the measurements for the foam pieces?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pyrogina In reply to djrc [2011-07-19 03:51:47 +0000 UTC]

i've made a guide sort of: [link]
blade is about 16", hilt about 12" and handle about 9". the extension is 16".
i think it's around 12-14" wide.

i didn't measure the individual pieces sadly
