Description
Just a tutorial for photoshop and digital painting in general (I mainly concentrated on painting techniques rather than photoshop technical details so I assume some working knowledge of the program here!). The piece is a portrait of a rather pretty woman with her cup of teaI use a WACOM Intuos 3 A6 in case anyone is interested
The final image can be found here:

Also, which tool did you use for the lineart?
I hope it wasn't the pencil, because with wacom tablets, if you move the pencil tool too fast, you lose sight of it. At the best of times.

I usually do the lineart in my sketchbook or on paper and then scan in the drawing

Great tutorial. Most in-depth one I've seen yet.
Also the girl in the piece looks like a friend of mine.

I GOT to try this. My sketches are fine, but my digital painting sux. They are truly pitiful. I hate to work on a sketch and end up leaving it in pencil because I'm too inept to try my colors. Thank you for all of the instructions. I shall take them to heart and to canvas! Byrd

I think you have to click on 'download', which downloads it to your computer, then you can open it as normal. But sometimes just clicking on the thumbnail will open it up in fullview. I'm not sure, sometimes DA seems to change its mind *goes to have a look*

Thanks for the comments! I'm hoping to make another tutorial soon, perhaps on my new piece 'And so it was' as it is quite background-heavy and I haven't done a tutorial about blending in backgrounds with the main subject yet

I have a question, do you use a mouse or sketchpad thing if you know what I mean, as I am curious. Though I have a guess that it might be the latter...

QuantumSuz In reply to Animehedonist [2007-02-05 23:08:41 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I use a tablet. I used to use a mouse though, it is ok you just need a different style of colouring (more like cel-style) than with a tablet, which is more like real painting

Something I always wonder when I see people who are so good at "Painting" directly in photoshop. Do you use a tablet? I mean, I have been practicing lately with "painting" over my own pencil sketches that I have scanned, but I could never sketch in photoshop directly. And even if I had a tablet, I don't know if I could sketch on the tablet and look at the screen at the same time. Or does the tablet have its own display?
I really hope that UC accepts me into the art program so I can see how others do this stuff. I'm 35 years old and never went to a "normal" college because I couldn't afford it, ended up going to tech school for electronics. I want to go back to school now for what I wanted to do in the first place (Art), but have no transfer credits and need to start from scratch. And with no money to boot.

Yes, I do use a tablet. I used to use a mouse, for a couple of years, but it is very hard to 'paint' directly with a mouse. Instead I used a lineart and cell shading technique back then.
Sketching on the tablet and looking at the screen is easy, after a while it just becomes natural. The tablet doesn't have a display, just a drawing area. (Although you can lift up the transparent protective sheet to put small drawings underneath and trace over them, I have never tried this though) I use a WACOM Intuos 3 A6 tablet. I find it easier to work on a smaller tablet - at first I thought the bigger the better surely, but you have to move the pen less distance on a smaller tablet to achieve the same brushstrokes. Getting the pen/brush settings in photoshop right I think ius the key, it makes the painting a lot easier. (I think I explained some of these in the second tutorial, can't quite remember though!)
Hope this helps.
I wish you luck with your application for the college!

WOW *speechless* The detail and look of this is so beautiful, how long did the image take? It makes me wish I had even basic ideas of how to use PaintShop Pro or photoshop.
I think you did an amazing job!
