Description
Just a tutorial for photoshop and digital painting in general (I mainly concentrated on painting techniques rather than photoshop technical details so I assume some working knowledge of the program here!). The piece is a portrait of a rather pretty woman with her cup of teaI use a WACOM Intuos 3 A6 in case anyone is interested
The final image can be found here:

The images usually take about 15-20 hours, I have been getting a bit quicker lately, but I think that is to do with me paying less attention to detail. I will have to sort this out for the prints, as you can see some of the mistakes when you look closely at the images. To get them perfect and remove all the little mistakes takes more like 50-60 hours of work It is a long time but the results are worth the effort.
I have been using photoshop for about 4 years now, it is quite easy to learn, and there are lots of tutorials here on DA. I wish you luck!

Wow thats a lot of time, but its understandable with the amount of detail you put in. Your artwork is stunning. Thank you for your support, did you learn Photoshop in a sort of trial and error way or did you use tutorials straight from the get go?

I learnt to use photoshop mainly in a trial and error way. I started with a cell-style shading method but soon realised that I didn't like the resulting outlines... however it is definately an easier method using a mouse. When I got my tablet I started using it just like a paintbrush and trying to keep the number of layers to a minimum, so it is like real oil painting - almost I used a few tutorials that I found online to get started but I also found it easy once I got going to develop my own style and use of the program. I don't actually use very much of the functionality of photoshop, I sometimes think I'd be better off with painter or something, but I can't be bothered learning to use a new program, lol!
I still have much to learn, but I guess the trick is to spend a lot of time on each piece, that seems to be the best strategy...

Nice and easy to follow. I use a different method but I really want to try what you do on my next digital piece. There is something that I don't do or know exactly how to achieve. On step #8 you added a "ring and border" in one of your lowest layers. How did you do that?

Ah, yes you are right I didn't really go into detail about that. I think I explained how to make the border properly in tutorial #2. You can make borders within borders just by increasing the canvas size and filling in the area which appears with the relevant colour. The ring was just a little detail that I added to her hand just using the regular paintbrushes. Hope that helps

this is good, really good
but one question, it doesn't really work for people who cant do smooth lines T_T

Yeah I know, it is a bit of a problem. I guess its just the way I work. Its quite hard to make it useful for several different programs. What software do you use to paint? Perhaps there is a way of overlaying several solid lines to produce a smooth effect. I'm not sure really! :S

This is a pretty awesome tutorial. I personally love seeing tutorials. You give images a different outlook, specially seeing how easily you did this. It's terrifc. I'm in awe at the hair, and you had some very helpful tips, such as time management. Brilliant piece of work.

Yes, I agree. I saved up for my tablet for quite a while, I used to do everything with the mouse in photoshop and it took a lot longer. Most of my earlier pieces (I think up to and including Gothic Fall: Cathedral) are done with a mouse, but they would have been done a lot quicker on a tablet. The mouse isn't too bad if you are doing a cell-style shading but for the fine shading style which I use nowadays the tablet is very useful. Its definately worth thinking about saving for one. Good luck and thanks for comments

Well written, and informative. It's interesting to see how other people go about their painting, and how it differs from everyone else. Hmm...one of these days, I'll have to get a tutorial up. Again, well written, and the piece itself is lovely.

I'm sure you'll catch it whenever I manage to get one up. Might be a bit, with me moving and all, but I'll get one up.
