Description
Just a tutorial for photoshop and digital painting in general (I mainly concentrated on painting techniques rather than photoshop technical details so I assume some working knowledge of the program here!). The piece is a portrait of a rather pretty woman with her cup of teaI use a WACOM Intuos 3 A6 in case anyone is interested
The final image can be found here:

Thank you so much for sharing. I've experimented with digital painting, but without a slightly more formal set of ideas to work from, I've been unhappy with my results. I'm really looking forward to trying this technique!

This tutorial helped me a LOT with getting started. I just finished my first digital painting [HERE ]. My method ended up being a little different from yours, but I just have to give you the credit for teaching me my first lessons. Thank you so much!

This is an amazingly useful painting tutorial, in fact one of the most useful ones I've found for a beginner like myself. I've wanted desperately to PS paint for a long time, but have been having so much trouble figuring out where and how to start. This gives me some really great insight into how a painting takes shape.

I've got a question, do you use Pen pressure on all your brushes? Or just sometimes? If so, when? ^^ Just got a tablet and I suck at drawing so this tutorial really helped!

QuantumSuz In reply to LukinT1 [2009-02-16 10:36:26 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I usually use pen pressure to adjust the opacity, and also the size (so it gets lighter and thinner at the beginning and end of the strokes). Although sometimes I set pen pressure to adjust foreground->background colour as that also produces nice painting effects

What about when you sketch? You use pen pressure then too? Because my sketches always become very light if I dont like press insanely hard with the pen, therefor my tips gets flat real quick lol

Ah - I tend to do the sketches traditionally and then scan them in rather than using the tablet.

Can I ask a question though?
I wanted to know what size uhm, canvas this was all done on? The uh...*thinks*
Pixel dimensions! I think. >.>;

Wow... How you can go from a rough sketch to that is beyond me, even if the answer's right in front of me. I just can't sketch straight into Photoshop. I have to use paper, which is annoying because I get through a huge pack of the stuff every few months. But anyway, beautiful stuff

Thank you. A big pile of paper is the best thing. I do most of my sketches on paper and then scan them in before I start on Photoshop. I love my sketchbook, I take it everywhere

I used to have sketchbooks but then I could never fit the ringbinder in the scanner. So do you do some pics straight into Photoshop with absolutely no preparation?

I assume you mean the tablet? It's a Wacom Intuos 3 graphics tablet - you use it with a digital pen instead of a mouse

Very sweet, even though I use GIMP, I can still do all of his. <33 I'm excited, once I learn how to shade properly my coloring may turn out to be much better using this method. Thanks a lot for making it!

I was just wondering what size and resolution do you tend to paint at? And do you scale the image down after?
I'm just starting to learn painting in adobe so I was just wondering what gives a better image with detail.
Awsome and very helpful tutorial. Thanks.

QuantumSuz In reply to darkgarden [2008-02-04 10:04:45 +0000 UTC]
I work at a low resolution to begin with, maybe 600px by 800px, in order to get the initial sketch looking correct. To do the details I then scale the image up to about 3000px by 4000px. The trick is not to use too many layers, or it gets very resource-hungry on your computer (I don't have a particularly fast machine). Anyway, layers are overrated, I prefer to paint in as few layers as possible I tend to scale the images down to 800px by 600px or something like that for web-resolution, that way people can't rip anything hi-res enough to matter, and I retain the 'original' myself
Hope that is helpful!

yes, very! Thankyou so much. I have been working at 1000x1500ish for my first try but I think I need to scale it up.
Thankyou for the help!
