Very good shot. I tried myself last summer to take a shot of a Dragon in flight, so I appreciate the patience and time a shot like this can take.

Hey! Thank you very much I'm really glad you like this!! It was the first shot as soon as I arrived at the lake. Just set up and it just came over. Focusing on these moving is really hard, but when I heard the auto focus beep, I just snapped away. I was very pleased when I seen this later! All the best for the new year Dusk!!

That is just amazing. These little boogers are hard to take a shot of. They alwaya seem to zip right from my shot when I try.

This is amazing - I love how the wings are at different angles - you have caught this so well. I'm going to have to out again and have a go - I didn't even think about trying to get one in flight Or maybe I'll just stick to birds - they are slightly bigger and slower moving

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

quicksimon In reply to Hozzell [2006-09-17 18:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Amzing. How did u take this photo, looks pretty hard to get in the front of the dragonflies, not to say that is even harder to get so much details on a moving insect just great

AKennethN [2006-09-12 14:10:52 +0000 UTC]

Ah! Amazing shot! Do you remember the shutter speed you used? Those buggers' wings move crazy fast.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

quicksimon In reply to AKennethN [2006-09-28 10:00:23 +0000 UTC]

4000/sec at f5.6!! That's the fastest shutter speed on my camera!! I had the camera in av mode and selected the largest aperture. Forgetting about the ISO (it was on 1600) the camera selected a very fast shutter!! Sorry it's taken so long!! Take it easy man!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AKennethN In reply to quicksimon [2006-09-28 12:52:04 +0000 UTC]

1/4000?! That's at least 4 times faster than my current manual! Crazy, fast, mate.

Holy shot!!!! A *flying* dragonfly!!! That earns a fav...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

quicksimon In reply to Hector42 [2006-09-12 10:03:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much Sven!!! Thanks for the too The wings look very grainy as I took this as soon as i got there and forgot about my ISO, it was taken at 1600! I think this probably helped keep its head frozen and sharp though! Shooting in AV mode, the camera would have selected a very fast shutter speed

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

That's a good shot!

How'd you manage to get that?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

quicksimon In reply to Metroboy [2006-09-12 10:08:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much mate! i don't know It was as soon as i got there!! I used a tripod which helps keep the camera steady for macro shots! Just seen it there flying, focused manually, then switched to auto focus, then fired away!!!! using a cable release also helps to eliminate camera shake!

Sigma 70-300? i was trying to catch those dragons when fying but I didnรคt make it :/ great catch! although a bit blurred.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

quicksimon In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2006-09-12 10:13:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, the old faithful sigma 70-300 I've got the 105 macro, but they don't come close enough for that! As I said to Sven, I forgot about my ISO for this shot (this was taken at 1600) So the out of focus wings looks grainy. Shooting in AV mode, the camera would have selected a fast shutter speed, so i reckon this helped to freeze the df and keep its head sharp
