Description I'm kind of tired, so I'll just write up what I can remember. This'll probably be added to later:

Britannia - mother of the British isles.

She was once the mysterious land known as Albion. Even though she was involved in trade, few really knew anything about her, with some people even claiming she was just a myth. Being Celtic, she is the younger sister of Gaul. And like Gaul, she too had to put up with unwanted attention from Rome.

Very much a love/hate situation, she and the empire had both moments of diplomatic bliss and violent conflict. At one point, pushed too far by the insult suffered by the tribal queen Boudicca, Britannia almost sent Rome packing altogether (the uprising she provoked was so fierce, it actually lead to Emperor Nero considering complete imperial withdrawal from the province). Although Rome's persistence won out in the end, this didn't mean she wouldn't smack him around the back of the head from time to time when he wasn't looking.

As Rome weakened, she kept getting attacked by Germanic tribes and the like. In the end, she would be killed by Saxon...

... Or can I say she didn't die, but rests in Avalon alongside the legendary King Arthur? Or maybe she is Avalon B|a HMM.

Just toying with ideas.

Character wise, she's sly with a sharp tongue, unafraid of speaking her mind. She's also very open, especially where sex is involved, seeing as Britons were noted by Roman writers for being pretty damn out and in the open over their sex lives. What did a British lady say to a Roman noblewoman upon being criticised for this?

"We consort openly with the best men, whereas you let yourselves be debauched in secret by the vilest".

I've been constantly debating who England's father could be. In the end, I find myself leaning towards Rome. Yes, overall English language and culture is mostly Germanic due to the Anglo-Saxon situation, but the fact Rome founded most of this country's most important cities (including the capital, London) and initial infrastructure, I can't help but like the idea. That, and the traditional Britannia personification is pretty damn Latin looking with her Roman outfit. Ireland was born from her relationship with Hibernia (though if Hidekaz hadn't said Ireland was England's older brother, I would have said Hibernia was Britannia's sister with Ireland as England's cousin), and Scotland from her relationship with Caledonia/Pictavia. The original name which Britannia was adapted from was used to refer to all of the British isles, hence the link between the brothers. England of course is "the traitor" - the one who allowed himself to be raised by the Angles and Saxons.

Apparently as a small child, me and my mother would play Boudicca, i.e: she would charge around with me in my pushchair with us yelling "death to the Romans!". Good times.

Edit - the nose was bugging me :'|

Yor artwork is seriously amazing. One could wander in your gallery for hours without getting tired of the astonishing masterpieces you can product. And your own ideas on characters never fail to amuse the visitors.

Great work with this one, too. You even reminded me of the statue of Boudicca near the House of Parliament in London and the small reconstruction of her attack to the Romans in the museum in Colchester. I can totally picture Britannia fighting next to her, setting the tents on fire like a true warrior.

And the comment on her sex life... Priceless.

Marvelous. Nothing else to say.

If Scotland was her son from Caledonia, Ireland from Hibernia, and England from Grandpa Rome, then who is Wales' father?

Scots actually, modern scots, came from invading irish celts, I am told - they finaly assimilated the mysterious Picts or something...

I am tempted to say Wales as well, though Roman influence on Wales was fairly minimal compared to the rest of the province (being mainly restricted to the Southern part of it). Being a country, he doesn't necessarily need a father.

What about the Nordic influences on English culture? Also, thinking about the early culture, they did quite a bit of trade elsewhere, so... Eh, nevermind... :/

Nordic influences came much later with Danelaw and the viking age. The British isles were otherwise involved in the trade of tin and a few other resources, but that was really the extent of their interaction with the outside world during the time of Rome

I suppose I can agree with that... Guess it just seems unsettling, since if Rome is Iggy's dad, he would technically be a rape!child considering how much Roman influenced was forced and practically shoved down the early Britons throats. D; They were so not down with subjugation...

Actually, that's one of the biggest (and annoying) fallacies around. Of course there were battles and uprisings, but much of the power the Romans exerted over the province was monetary (bribes, etc) rather than force of arms. As long as people paid their taxes and understood who was in charge, they were fine to carry on the same way as they had before (for the most part). In some cases, Roman culture was actually embraced.

Ah, well, I suppose we have differing viewpoints. My British History classes and Celtic classes keep touting the opposite, so perhaps it's a biased opinion? My teachers *are* English, so...However the quashing of the Boudicca rebellion was a terrible show of force. They massacred their people's druids at Mora and annhilated much of the clans. From what I've learned, the early clans were always trying to be a thorn in Rome's side and force them away. Rome's peoples were more barbaric then they, anyways.

I'm English too :'|a I wont deny force was used when uprisings occurred, but on the whole, the culture of the Britons was left mostly unharmed.

The Boudica rebellion was caused by monetary (or territorial, to be specific) issues rather than them actually trying to wipe out a culture - the Romans disputed the will left by Boudica's husband, and when she tried to protest this, they went one step too far in silencing her, leading to the rebellion. The fact that she managed to cause so much upset (and even caused the emperor to even consider leaving altogether) meant the Romans could hardly take a soft hand when dealing with it.

If you'd like some books on it, I can recommend this one [link] Alternatively, there are some good (credible) websites out there, including this article by the BBC.

For the interests of both historical accuracy and to avoid the unnecessary pondering, sure, let's go with Rome. The lack of Roman interest in the western half of Britannia is probably personified as Rome playing favourites with his kids.

I hope I'm not butting in, but I'm guessing that if Rome is England's father, he might also be Wales' father. The part of Britain which is called Wales today was also colonised by the Romans: there were mines and Roman towns and forts like in England.
