...why are you cutting them out?

rachaelm5 In reply to Negative-Inc [2008-01-25 14:52:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm planning to have several layers of design behind the dragons, and I want the cut-paper design to show through their coils to some extent. Don't worry; you'll see!

Yes indeedy, but I found that I was able to handle it last year with a feathery phoenix, so this actually shouldn't be as bad.

Wow. And you're gonna cut this out? Brave, brave woman you are. So many little details. :>

Very nice work, your colored pencil works never ceases to amaze me. :>

Thanks very much, once again!

Yeah, as ludicrous as it is to *want* to cut the beasties out, there's just a certain look I want to get that I don't think I can get any other way... Well, not without a computer.

Cut them out? Oh dear...

But they do look awesome!

rachaelm5 In reply to Doodlebotbop [2008-01-25 15:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Sure; gotta cut 'em out so that I can use a paper-layering technique kind of like I did for Creating Balance last year.

Do you use an exacto knife?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to Doodlebotbop [2008-01-25 18:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeedy. I had a Design professor in college who loved cut-paper projects, so I got quite a lot of experience with sharp and pointy things. Exacto knives are my friends...

How much is it for a good one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to Doodlebotbop [2008-01-26 02:05:12 +0000 UTC]

Basic X-Acto knife is about $2.50, give or take - [link] . Blades aren't that expensive either, but if you do a lot of intense cuttin' projects, you can rip through those blades pretty quickly.

*snicker*

Not quite where I'd planned to go with this (as my ability to blend my own drawings with anything else has NEVER worked very well... Too much color or something silly like that); in the end, I went very geometric and abstract. I wanted an oriental feel for the piece, and instead of the oriental/organic thing I'd originally planned, the piece decided that it wanted to be austere instead! Totally flipped... But it worked. Better than I'd thought it would, too. I'll get the thing posted as soon as the glue dries.

Well, I love almost every thing you do, you just have a real gift!

p.s.
Sorry for my terrible typos last post. I just now noticed them. I swear I'm getting worse.

JadeThePredator In reply to ??? [2008-01-24 18:25:09 +0000 UTC]

It does wonderful as it is, but it should look more interesting with the background you mentioned.

Good luck cutting that tangled mass...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to JadeThePredator [2008-01-25 15:18:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

It actually shouldn't be that bad. Most of the cutting will be along the perimeter; I left the interior fairly dense with dragon coils intentionally!

pearwood In reply to ??? [2008-01-24 18:23:48 +0000 UTC]

It's tricky to follow the blue swirls, but the brown and red really stand out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to pearwood [2008-01-25 15:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, some of the contrast in the blue dragon got lost in the scan. I'll tweak it for the finale.

ShadowDragon252 In reply to ??? [2008-01-24 18:20:43 +0000 UTC]

That is beautiful! I love the colors you used and how well you made them intertwine so they actually look balanced. Wonderful work =]

rachaelm5 In reply to ShadowDragon252 [2008-01-25 15:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

I'm still kind of worried about the color contrast being *too* sharp, but it looks tolerable to me with the bits of each dragon that overlap the other. Oughta still work, and hopefully the background I have planned will go a ways toward balancing it out a bit more.
