GIANT FILESIZE AND IMAGE!
Promised myself I wouldn't make this tutorial so long. Opps.
Cross-stitching is quite simple. Don't let the length of this tutorial scare you D: It got longer as I added in the tips :c
I was surprised to see there wasn't much cross-stitchers on dA. Even more when I saw there wasn't a lot of tutorials on this D:
This tutorial covers the basics of it.
I started cross stitching around early 8th or late 7th grade when my mom got into it. c: She used to be a fashion designer, so she was good at sewing. Most of what I wrote in the tutorial was taught to me by my mom ^^ She is awesome. c:
Oh, PS:
Thank you for the support, favs, comments. I haven't gone through all of them (I have some from the start of May!) but I promise I'll be looking through and replying to them today.
Thank you so much, and I really mean it.

thats a really awesome tutorial although you shudnt really tie knots as they can show up as horrible lumps in your final design xx

Very nicely laid out tutorial! Easy to understand for people who've always wanted to try cross-stitching, but don't have anyone around to show them how! ^^
Personally, I've never knotted my threads... I usually leave a tail when I start and end, and then weave it back in among the stitches that I've done. It makes it easier to go back and undo stitches if needed, and it also keeps the fabric from becoming lumpy in the back if you're going to frame the image.

interesting. I don't even knot my thread, I cross the stitches over it to keep it in place. I find it makes it a lot easier to unpick if and when I mess up!

Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much for all the info and the wonderful tips. I do embroidery and never tried cross stitching before but now I feel more confident to actually go and try cross stitch, I thought it was much more complicated XD

I haven't cross-stitched in ages. I think it's about time I pick it up again. I've never been able to use that hoop, it would just make frusturated, I just couldn't use one, so I appluade you. My wrists don't hurt though if I don't use it. Guess it's different for everyone. The other tutorial to make the patterns on photoshop is going to be useful. Thanks so much for making it (= I was getting tired of sewing traditional patterns.

If I could just make a suggestion: When cutting out the fabric for the pattern, it's best to add at least 3 inches around the pattern, just in case. This way, it is much easier to frame, stitch into a pillow, or whatever the plan for the picture is.

I've wanted to try cross-stitching for quite awhile, but never had the ambition or supplies to go through with it. Or the know-how ^^'
Nest time I go to town (I live in the country) with my mom, I'll get some supplies to do this! I actually went to Hobby Lobby today, wish I had seen this BEFORE I went XD
Thanks for making, WANT TO TRYYYYYYY!!!!

You're an inspiration! I can't wait to show you the handmade parchment clockwork version of Mario 1 world 1-1 that I'm working on in case we get the EMP of doooom or the Corporations forbid all memory as "intellectual property" haha... my own gramma couldn't have made a better cross-stitching page course.

Nice tutorial. It covered all the basics. One question I have is how do you do your beginning knot? I find it's a pain when you get down to using a single thread for stitching and have to make 7 knots on top of each other to get a big enough knot so it won't go through the fabric holes.

creativeCrater [2010-01-13 06:03:36 +0000 UTC]
This is incredibly helpful! Actually, I've recently gotten back into cross stitching since my friend got married I made her a bride/groom cross stitch gift. She loved it!
This is helpful though. You covered everything! The only point on which I'd like to make a suggestion is your first knot. If you make really tight stitches (i do, looks like you do) you can run the thread under several vertical rows (not through the front, but partly under it) and then as you stitch you'll stitch over it with no bumpy's! And to end a thread you run it under several rows of stitches you did earlier! Anyhow, that's how I was taught and I thought i'd share.

RainCookie,
This is so helpful. I haven't cross-stitched in years. I remember it as being so frustrating (I was eight). This might be better on my wrists too compared to crocheting.
Do you have a place where I can download your beautiful patterns? I'd love to try some of them out!

You get better with practice. Don't stop if you like it. I definitely am still learning how to crochet, but now that I've been doing it awhile, my stitches are starting to look more "neat." It's hard work but it's fun!

RainCookie In reply to Kurukan [2009-06-25 21:54:46 +0000 UTC]
Hmm I think it might sometimes depend on the count fabric you're using. Some of them are bigger, square-wise, than others. Or maybe you're pulling too tight with the string? I'd need to see it to know exactly why tho :c
