Description
So I've been asked to do one a million times and finally found a moment to do it. Part 2 will deal with refining and detailing, but I'm not sure when it'll be up. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
I know I'm not the best at explaining things. Some things are a bit hard to explain for me because they're things you learn as you go, things you learn to see and it's hard to teach someone else that. But I hope it gives an idea of how I work. If it helps anyone at all I'll be happy.
NOTE: I forgot to state that after I set in the initial shadows/highlights I merged the sketch layer with the shading layer and continued the shadow/highlight bit ON TOP of it. Sorry about that. Also, some blending was done with the smudge tool, but mostly just with the soft brush. ; I told you I'm terrible at explanation.
The method I use is almost identical to the one used by WeiWorks on youtube and he explains it much better than I. Please check out his videos if you want a video walkthrough.

It should be up soon! I'm also going to try and make a video to demonstrate visually, so keep an eye out if you're interested.

Surely I will, I love tutorials from artists that paint beautifully! Videos are the best also to see the steps with more detail, so it's good news! Especially those videos without the speed-up, will you give us a link to some full video or just a youtube fast version?

I'm not sure if I'll speed it up. It depends on how long it is. I can always make a "fast" version for youtube and then upload the one in normal speed for download for the people who are interested in that. I paint very slowly so I think it would be really long. X_X

Oh I see, any version of video would be good anyway! Thank you for making those tutorials.

Thank you so much for this! Skin is so difficult for me! I will definitely be giving this a try!

Omgh I've been wondering how the hell people start with black and white and make it work. Very helpful, thanks very much! Much easier than going in and picking all shades of skin by hand. x_x

I used to do it straight color, sometimes I still do but it's so much easier to get things like shape and likeness right in grayscale. It's much quicker but I could never find a way that made grayscale coloring look semi-realistic. But this way has worked for me because it's painted over anyway afterwards. It's MUCH easier than worrying about shades in the beginning. I hope it helps.
Also, random tip...and I don't even know if you work on a BIG canvas like I do, but I've also found that starting the painting on a scale of around 600 or 700 pixels or so, getting all your base shading in and then increasingly the resolution slowly as you work makes everything blend so much better than just working on a giant scale to begin with.

Oooh, that's a good idea too, I'll definitely try that the next time I have time to sit down and paint!
