Description Given the unpopularity of the BBC's 2010 Dalek, I was asked by Project Dalek to help produce plans for an improved version of the 2010 model that would hopefully appeal more to Dalek builders. The McKinstry Dalek I posted previously was in fact the starting point for that project, the design was then developed through several iterations until the team was happy and we had the True Paradigm.

More acceptable, but the proportions are still too out of whack.

I like this design of the Paradigm Daleks a lot more than the official designs. I wish the BBC could have made them more like this instead, minus the slightly out of proportion backs.

A pure evolution of Dalek perfection (though such a cryogenic shame you have dabbled your daubs with bighead emperor atrocities) Keep it Clean & Mean   CAMPDAP (Campaign for Dalek Purity)

I think if the new paradigm did not have hunchbacks, they would have stayed.

I like your pic, (indeed, that's why I faved it  ).

The Paradigm shift design seems to benefit from good camera angles, especially from the front, where they appear at their most threatening with their exaggerated head and shoulders. I also think those proportions benefit the actor inside; he's probably got a nice cappuccino machine in there along with shower and toilet unit, but he also has the ability to move around easily and having the general comfort of space inside the prop. I do wonder if the actors had any input with the new design? I'm sure Health and safety at the BBC had a few words too.

Anyway, I don't really like the redesign, the only concession I'd give would be the eye-stalk; it gives the impression that absolute evil is staring you in the face.

Also, what is going on at the back?
What's that all about?
Have I missed some website with all the theories about this or is it simply some back door for the Kaled mutant to escape?
Input required please!

Overall, this pic deserves a nice big fat fave because of the scene. The Daleks work by applying a good context. And this pic demonstrates a small vignette of Dalek plotting and machinations. I can just hear the Supreme dictating his plans!

  Prop?

These look amazing, though I didn't hate the 2010 design either, I liked em being bigger and bulkier like sentient tanks that made you think about how wise it was to be near them

Decidedly improved, but, sadly - and this is not a commentary on your terrific work, btw, (VERY impressive!) but the failure of the design  - but a polished turd is still a turd. Thank Heaven they wised up and pushed these uglies in the background!

I'm not particularly that averse to the 2010 style Daleks, colours aside, but I do really like how you've given them more classic proportions here. Suits them so much better. Does this design still have the rear hatch though?

It does have the hatch on the back. I got the plans and am thoroughly impressed. They are also about the height of the 2005 daleks too.

I think the proportions of this three seem more in line with the traditional model of dalek, it maybe optical illusion but they appear slimmer than their 2010 counterparts.

Yes, that was our aim, to take the design elements of the 2010 Dalek and translate them onto a more classic shape. The True Paradigm Dalek is also the same size as a classic Dalek since not only was the look of the new Daleks putting people off building them, so was the size, the New Paradigm is just too big for most people to easily store and transport.

The complete size change and the look of recycled compost bins is the thing that put me off building one. Fred (my very old home build) is getting delapidated after twenty years of trips to radio meetings etc and the bits no longer go together I was just about build a new series type when presto they changed them to that abomination. Dunno about kids hiding behind the couch anymore, more like rolling on the floor in front of it laughing.

What immediately springs to mind is the old conical 'Dalek Book' look - something about the shape of the top sections, I think. And do the skirts bend in towards the back - the side double-hemi panels, I mean? Either that, or my eyes are going screwy, because I can't see how those angles work otherwise!

I'm not entirely sure this look works for me. The proportions of the neck to the shoulders seems skewed a little too far the other way - before, the neck was too small, now it seems too big...but maybe that's just because I don't like that compost bin being anywhere on a Dalek! I don't think it helps that the skirts seem to be vaguely Imperial in their lines, very straight and upright. That's probably just the angle of the render, though.

But, what the heck do I know compared to the massed knowledge of so many Dalek builders?

Ratbullets In reply to Librarian-bot [2011-11-11 11:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the double width panels are angled inward toward the back and you're right about the skirt being very 'Imperial' in shape, when I overlayed the True Paradigm skirt on an Imperial skirt I found the angles at the front to be almost identical.
