Description I grew up watching Space Ghost, and I always loved Space Ghost and his ship, the fabled "Phantom Cruiser."  This ship looked great, and it had everything!  It could fire every beam weapon you could think of:  Power Beams, Force Beams, Tractor Beams, Freeze Rays, Heat Rays, . . . you name it.  It was way ahead of its time, in terms of Sci-fi space ships.  It had defensive energy shields.  It had an FTL capability, (I think they called it "Hyper-speed.")  It even had a cloaking device, (which they called "Inviso-Power.")  Well, maybe some of the terminology was a bit juvenile, but as a kid, I just ate it up.  You just had to love the Phantom Cruiser.  The design of the Phantom Cruiser changed and evolved a bit over the years, but I decided to build the classic original design.  Since they usually only showed the Phantom Cruiser from one or two different angles, there wasn't a lot of reference material to use in putting this model together.  But I did my best to be faithful to the original design.  The basic design (vaguely reminiscent of a falcon) is wonderfully sleek, and has tons of attitude.  I only took one real liberty with the design.  The original design really seems to have paper-thin wings, and lacks any kind of engine exhaust, so I thickened the wing root a bit to add a subtle exhaust slots to the back of the wings.  There is a similar slot at the front of the wing roots.  This might be an intake, a reverse exhaust port, or a navigational deflector.  Normally, I wouldn't be a fan of a painting a ship yellow and orange, but this design really popped off of the bright blue spacescapes that they featured in the colorful galaxy that Hanna-Barbera had created for Space Ghost.

Thank you for your reply. May have to just try and design it myself. Was going to print it in clear resin and make make it in the ghost version.

Excellent idea!  Best of luck with that.  If it turns out as you imagine it, you should be sure to post some images of it.

Oh yeah. I remember this so well. Ranks right up there with the original NCC-1701. Thanks so much for your faithful rendition.

Thanks so much for taking a moment to write a nice comment.  Yeah, I love the classic Phantom Cruiser too.  What's not to love?

I certainly have fond memories of Saturday mornings in the '60's! Space Ghost (and anything else with a science-fiction flavor) was one of my faves!

Yeah, the Phantom Cruiser is a beauty.  The fact that it could do almost anything was a big bonus too!

Hey, thanks so much for the nice comment.  I checked out your work, and it's beautiful!  Our artistic styles are totally different, but we seem to be passionate about a lot of the same characters, subjects, and interests.  And it seems like we are from the same generation.  Do you ever feel like today's heroes don't measure up to the heroes of the 60's, 70's, and 80's?  Boy, I do.  Back in the day, Gary Owen's Space Ghost, Adam West's Batman, and Leonard Nimoy's Spock were epic heroes that kids could really look up to.  They had epic, exciting adventures, and they could kind of do no wrong.  They always won, and they looked great saving the day with phasers, bat-beams, and all the rest.  Oh, and the designs were classic as well:  The original Enterprise, the Phantom Cruiser, the '66 Batmobile, . . .  Oh well, I'm just wondering if you might have some similar nostalgic feelings.

First, thank you for the kind comments.

Yea, it's not only a generational thing [I watched this shows as a 7 year old] But it was an era where the shows were made to entertain, not sell toys, to tell a story of adventure, when not constrained by focus group guidelines, to be an entity unto themselves, heroes that inspired kids. Yes I know they were white male centrist and they sold advertising on Saturday mornings but as a kid, I was immune to that thinking. I don't look back at those aspects, yes they exist but that was the time they were from. I was young and this stuff fired the imagination. Right or wrong or politically incorrect, they were what they were.

The designs were iconic. The phantom cruiser you did is really a great tweak while staying right in the pocket with its roots, the thing looked like it was hauling ass while standing still. The 60's was all about that "thing' that supported the story, the one's you mentioned are instantly recognizable, the Batmobile, the Black Beauty,  the Flying sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Updated versions rarely, it at all measure up. I'm geeking here, but the Matt Jefferies D7 Klingon battle cruiser was a beautiful design as was the Enterprise. They were clean lines, easy for TV to reproduce and communicated the idea instantly. Now it's detail down to the screw threads. I love CGI, but stand down a tad guys.

But there I go again, I could write a tome on this stuff.

Thanks again for the kind words.

D

Well said!  If you ever write a tome on this stuff, please let me know.  (I'd probably read it.)  (I love your Space Ghost art BTW.)  In the mean time, if you like the clean lines of the original D7 Battlecruiser, (and other such designs) much of my art is based on it, so you might enjoy checking out my gallery.  My art is designed to give you a nice clear (high resolution) look at these designs.  Thanks again for the thought provoking comments.

I also grew up watching Space Ghost and think your Phantom Cruiser is badass!

If it it okay with you, I added to a image to honor the show and your art too...

Are you serious?  That sounds like it would be nightmarishly complicated, but hey, I'm no expert on origami.  Good luck!

Somebody should make a model kit of this design, like they did the Quest Jet.

No problem.  I'm glad I could help.  I'm surprised that no one (that I know of) has made a high-quality collector-style replica of this classic ship.  Before I built this CAD model, I also built a physical Phantom Cruiser model out of sheet styrene and modeling putty.  Then I mounted in on a base with a cratered "lunar-style" surface, (to suggest the surface of the Ghost Planet.)  Then I attached an embroidered Space Ghost emblem (patch) to the base.  It turned out pretty good.  Best of luck with your project!

Both Of Them Actually, I Mean The 1966 Phantom Cruiser Has A Glider Like Touch Feeling To It But The 1981 Phantom Cruiser Has A Almost Fighter Jet Type Style As Well.
