Description I finally broke down and designed my own variant of the TIE fighter.  This design solves all of the problems that I've ever had with the classic TIE fighter.  My design features an aggressive canted-wing design and exciting angled tail-fins to bring in the feeling of a modern jet fighters like the F-18, F-22, or F-35.  It has 6 times the firepower, with 8 big forward blasters, 2 rear blasters, and two ion cannons running down the inside of the main forward wings.  It also has much better visibility.

It has 8 forward laser cannons (4 large cannons under the chin, and 2 smaller ones on each wing support), 2 rear laser cannons, and 2 forward ion cannons.  It is also equipped to carry large missiles on hard points under each main wing.

Reminds me of the Jedi Interceptor's Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi used at the start of 'Revenge of the Sith' somewhat.

Yeah, I can see definitely that.  (But I like this one better.)  Thanks for the comment!

looks powerful.....until you realize that the amount of energy needed to power all that is rally high and from the looks of it, this thing would need a bigger battery to be able to perform well. this by itself looks like it would go in and run out of energy after 15/20 minutes of use. even less if damaged.

still this thing would be useful for defeating light/medium freighters and troop transport ships then retreating back to the main ship for a recharge. and looks alone would probably do some good t scare some out of being in your way.

I like this thing.. it's got a lot of anger to it.. it makes me think of a design I was myself considering of combining the Imperial features with the Sith Interceptor/S-12 Blackbolt from TOR.

Thanks so much!  I'm glad that you like it.  I tried to make an aggressive looking design, that had plenty of firepower, big engines, and lots of attitude.  Thanks so much for the great comment!

You succeeded on the aggressive design.. message me, I have a question/thought to share with you.

This is an highly capable ship, which a TIE, according to classic Imperial thinking, isn't supposed to be. *A* TIE fighter isn't much to write home about; it's fast and maneuverable, but also lightly armed and fragile. The key to their effectiveness is that you almost never face *a* TIE fighter - you face a bloody great swarm of the damn' things, which are individually considered fairly expendable. They're like the B1 battle droids of the starfighter world. From what we saw in Episode VIII, the First Order has made its TIEs a bit less cheap and throwaway, but not to the point where they could match a New Republic starfighter one-on-one, as this ship could. An Assassin looks like something a Rebellion/New Republic strategist would have come up with - a ship capable of winning battles even when heavily outnumbered and lacking capital ship support.

So this design implies either a general rethink of starfighter strategy on the part of the First Order, or a specialized model produced in relatively low numbers for crucial, high-risk missions. I'd guess the latter, because, the TIE Defender, its very superiority would probably make it too expensive to mass-produce - especially with the First Order's limited resources. The inclusion of ion cannons is suggestive in that regard. If you wanted to, say, knock out the Senator's fighter escort and disable his shuttle, a squadron of TIE Assassins would be a perfect choice.

Aesthetically, it manages to achieve what the classic TIE designs (to me, anyway) never did - it looks like a seriously menacing and highly formidable piece of military hardware. Unlike the TIE/sfi, though, this looks like a progression of Imperial technology rather than a product of "variant evolution". Beautifully done!

Again, thanks so much for the masterfully insightful commentary!  (I think you put more thought into this than I do.)

Regarding your comments, yes, I can confirm that, (like the TIE Defender) the TIE Assassin was a highly specialized model produced in relatively low numbers for crucial missions.  While it saw limited action during the era of the Empire, the First Order continued the development of this design, eventually resulting in the TIE/sfi.  While the TIE/sfi was again produced only in limited quantities, it was a favorite design of Admiral Rath, who not only flew such a craft himself, but who also insisted on being escorted by an elite squadron of such vessels, to assure his own personal safety and security.

Love it. It's like a hybrid design between the Eta-2 Jedi and TIE Interceptors, which really gives it an agressive look worthy of the Empire. It feels a little too heavily-armed, though, and the huge engines kind of break from the whole TIE aesthetic you're clearly going for. But still, a very sexy design.

So sexy in fact that I wonder if I could draw inspiration from it? I'm in the early stages of creating a CG-animated fanfilm and wish to give one of the antagonists a special type of TIE as her personal fighter.

Glad to hear that you're inspired by this design!  Here is a link to this fighter's sister ship in the First Order.  ravendeviant.deviantart.com/ar…

This would make a good "signature vehicle" for a named character.  Best of luck on your fanfilm!  If you end up using a similar design, let me know how it turns out.

Yeah, I saw the First Order variation too.

Another source of inspiration is this , the one labeled A. I really want to give that fighter an agressive look and yours and MackSztaba's design are the ones I like most.

Wowzers, A nice design,
I have similar concepts too, though not as many cannons or large engines.

Hey, I checked out your work.  Cool designs!  Well done!  Yeah, it may seem like I went a little overboard on the weapons and big engines, but I really wanted to fix all the issues that I had with the original TIE designs.  Thanks for your comments.  It seems like we are kindred spirits in the world of ship designing.

Indeed, I was even trying to go for that larger engine design too with some of them, but you seen what I came up with.

I doubt I'm the only one who wants to fly this in a video game, or even play it in Fantasy Flight's miniatures game (see www.fantasyflightgames.com/edg…). Will you also design its Rebel counterpart?

Ravendeviant In reply to ArmamentDawg [2015-03-09 14:57:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your awesome comments!  You're right!  It would be great to see this fighter in a video game or as a miniature.  I just love the Fantasy Flight's miniatures.  Their attention to detail and weathering are excellent!  Ooooh!  I hadn't thought about designing a Rebel (or Galactic Alliance) counterpart.  What a great suggestion!  I'm kind of a Mandalorian fan, so I might end up taking it in that direction.  But yes, I'll give that some thought.  What would the ultimate Star Wars goodguy fighter look like?  I'll have to give that some thought and attention.  While I'm thinking about that, please check out my idea for a lightsaber/darksaber design.

Thanks!  I'm glad that you like it.  I found that this design pretty much satisfied my "itch" to design a TIE fighter, so I don't have any immediate plans to design new variants.  But, you never know. . . I wouldn't rule it out.  If you're interested, I could post a few more images of this design from different angles, and in formation with others of its kind.
