Description Linart: Me
Colours: *dyemooch

A couple years ago, I'd started drawing an image of the fallen TFs from TF:TM; and I never finished it. Just a little bit ago, I ran across it again in my image files and thought to try and redo it. Some of the aspects of the original, I kept, but for the most part this is something different.

I tried to play on the raw emotions for this, seeing as how everyone in the image has no more reason to hide whatever they hid before. Ironhide has given in to hysteria, Prowl is irremovably lost and thoughtless, Windcharger is devistated beyond consolation, Brawn is shocked at his inability, Huffer is totally speechless, and Ratchet has completely broken. Which leaves Wheeljack; he was purposely protrayed the way he is in the image to show that while he's taken the impact of his own death, he's still always what he was: a soul for others to share. He's never cared much for his own well-being, and always strived, at his own risk, to protect others. Personally, I always imagined that 'Jack was the net that caught Ratchet when he fell, so I concentrated 'Jack on him. A person can have many friends, but does not often have many best friends.
----

I had hoped that the lineart would have turned out less muddled and confusing, and there were quite a few things that I rushed on, or left unfinished. However, with the help of *dyemooch , who beautifully coloured the image for me shortly after it's completion, I've gained an amount of pride for this and a sense of accomplishment. Thank you, Bumbles. <3

It was very abrupt, wasn't it? To the best of my knowledge it had more to do than just shock-value; they were releasing a new line of figures for Generation II and needed to "make room", so to speak. So they killed off several core characters that didn't quite meet popularity standards in toy-sales. : C
Really is a crummy reason, but that's how businesses based entirely in consumerism works. I think all these years later, they've realized the popularity of the characters is reflected in much more than just toy sales, of course, but that still drives a lot of their decisions in the end. Only difference is that these days, they can make money on much more than just figures.Β Β

Oh, this fact always made me cry. Which is why when the school year is done, I'll try to write a fanfic in which someone finds a way to bring that back to life. I can't promise anything but since I love them so, I'll try.

It was a dreadful scene, yeah. I still get sad to think of it sometimes. I'm happy though that at least in many other story universes they are still alive.
Definitely give it a try when you've got time though! It's a great outlet for creativity! C :

Gutted they killed WheelJack i always remember the first time i saw him disgaurded on the flood in the movie. Did you know in the original script he was never meant to be dead, the animators got muddled and ended up killing a legend.

Great pic.

So I hear! Apparently Windcharger was not totally planned to be trashed on the floor there either. Shame that so many great characters got the axe totally on accident like that. I was totally heart-broken (and sufficiently terrified) when Ratchet got shot up. That was just such a horrible thing to see when I was so young. He was, and still is, my absolutely favorite.

Thank you very much.

It's really something to hear everyone's take on the movie. So many people were so deeply effected by the massive use of character death. I wonder if Hasbro ever imagined their characters could effect such change on people; if they even gave it a second though when they decided to kill them. I mean, clearly, with all the spin-offs and alternate universes that've emerged, featuring those old characters, they realized their importance, but I supposed it must have come as a surprise to them. : \

Just looking at this makes me want to cry. I recently re-watched the movie and it's really just...

Windcharger especially, even though he wasn't really on my 'favorites list'...well, the look on his face affects me the most. Their emotions are so clearly rendered, and so very human in this that one can't help lament for them--and ponder the larger questions in life.

Thanks for doing this.

Thank you so much. I appologize that it has taken me such a long time to write back to you; I really do appreciate your comment. : )
Their faces and posture were integral to the entire image. So while planning it out I sketched a very rough stick figure for thier postures, and from there, started from the face and worked outward. Was a very different way of working, but I thought if I saw their faces first, it'd inspire me to continue [as I often get frustrated drawing pictures with several characters involved].

: ) Thank you. I appreciate the comment. I am glad that I was able to nail the emotions; this picture was very sentimental for me. I couldn't think of a better situation for Wheeljack, and I'm awful glad to hear that other fans feel the same about him. He was always such a non-selfish character; willing to blow himself up to perfect an experiment capable of helping his fellow Autobots to victory or, more often, survival.
Thank you again, T!

I could sense all the feelings from the picture even before I read you comments, which made me feel good that I was able to see eye to eye with the artist and it is a testimony to how well you were able to convey the emotions on this pic.

I was immedtily able to notice that Jack seemed to be the only one keeping it toghter, still like his old self, which kinda gave me hope for the others

Looking as this picture, I can't help but feel a kinda of sad regret about thier fate. When I first watched the movie when I was 7, I really didn't get that they had died, I remember crying because Optimus died but not the others, I just didn't understand.
Only when I was few years older, did it impact me "They Died?!!" I felt so horrible, it just seemed so unfair to me at the time for heros to die, even if they are fighting for the greater good.

ravenshield In reply to Nogojo [2008-01-12 03:44:47 +0000 UTC]

: ) Thank you so much for this lovely comment. I really am so pleased to hear that you, and others, were able to pick up on all the emotions of this image. It was a very personal endevour, as many of these bots were childhood heroes for me, as they were to many other children growing up at the time.
Not that growing up has changed my feelings much; Ratchet and Optimus are inspirational figures to me and I'm not ashamed to say that the thought of them has helped me along the way as I work to fufill my childhood dream of becoming a Paramedic for county Fire service.
While drawing this, I thought very carefully on who would be feeling what based closely on their personalities; When it came time to draw in Jack, I couldn't think of a better role for him then that of the infallible friend that unendingly looks beyond their own shortcomings to comfort another. Jack has always been unshakable in his pursuit of keeping a high morale. : ) I've always admired him for that.
Even though the continuity says these guys are dead, they'll live forever in us; I wonder if Hasbro had ever imagined they'd create such feeling characters that'd carry over such strong bonds to their fans. : )

I think, oddly enough, that it was Brawn's expression that caught me most at first - he's normally such a brash thing, that expression of shock just looks so... unexpected on him.

But then - gosh. All the expressions here are just so heartbreaking. I'm rapidly descending into incoherency here, so I'll just say: Oh, boys. Boys. *weeps*

You and dyemooch are a crack team. Everything between the two of you comes out so beautifully.

I love the strange feeling this piece gives - it's kind of eerie. Like all the characters are standing there, someplace between life and death and someone – hell, probably Primus himself – just slapped them with the β€œGuess what? You’re dead!” speech.

And they’re just sitting there, thinking on what they last remembered seeing, and realizing…

I love how Wheeljack’s the only one who seems to have any sense about him; but then, I think perhaps that out of all the Autobots, he’s one of the most likely to have made peace with himself a long time ago. Especially given how prone he was to blowing himself up. He looks like he’s ready to accept reality and move on to - wherever, but hell if he's going to leave Ratchet behind even in death.

Like you said – one does not find many best friends. Harder still, perhaps, to find one who would be willing to wait with you - for you - until you’re ready to move on. I get that sense with 'Jack and Ratchet, here. And it makes the pain of thinking of them dead for such stupid reasons as corporate greed just a little easier to bear.
