Thank you! I really enjoyed working on this one. Kraid's body folds can be hypnotic.

Wow. Let me begin this with a deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep breath....
ok. here goes.
your pic is awesome. the scale is the first thing that I see, but then I notice Kraid. You really captured this grotesque creature well--this is the best fan-art I've seen of him yet. Really. He's just...well, to put it simply, that huge. The other thing that jumps at me is detail. You spared no expense. I see no flaws. They call that...um...flawless.
Really nice.

Oh goodness, wow - thank you so much.
I really appreciate your kindness. Super Metroid is my favorite video game, so I get kind of...passionate about art I do for it, haha.

Disadvantage? Naw.
Love how you drew him; a giant fleshy, muscular lizard king! Seems like "RAWR" or "GORR" would suit him. And when full viewing, it looks like you did this feat with MSpaint!
Ah... That game was a blast, I loved the music, gave a perfect sense of being overwhelmed by such a monstrosity. Even if he can only take 3 super missiles to the mouth.

Haha, thank you!
Ya, this image was done entirly in MS Paint. I really love working in that programme. The simple, imperfect, lines really speak with personality to me. Gives images a very recognizable soul.
Super Metroid is my absolute favorite game; the imagery, the music, the characters, the story, all of it is just amazing to me. C :

This is brilliant!! I love how Samus is like "time to take you doooown..." I've really got to try some MS paint stuff...
Have you ever thought about doing mother brain?? I bet you could make her look kick ass

ravenshield In reply to SargeMcCluck [2009-01-29 10:13:03 +0000 UTC]
: ) Thank you for the kind comment. MS Paint really is a very fun programme to work in. It's simplicity gives a certain charm to the work that comes out of it; makes it very distinguishable. Also, I'm a simple person - so we fit together great. : D
I do actually have plans to finish this series of images, and Mother Brain is part of it. She's last, however, right after Ridley. There's about...4 left in the series. : )

so how did you make this? is this what drawing tablets let you do? i never seen one, just heard of them

ravenshield In reply to Name-Changer [2009-01-28 19:04:31 +0000 UTC]
All I used to make this image was MS Paint and my tablet. I think people have a misconception of tablets. Tablets do not somehow...enhance your ability to create images or give you "cheats" to different tools, or filters, or whatever in digitized art programmes. A tablet is simply like a pencil, except it doesn't leave a mark. Rather, it's a stylus that transfers the lines you make onto your screen. I was confused about tablets before I got mine as well. I'll give you a run down of them. : )
This is my exact make and model: [link] ; it's a Hanvon Painting Master 0806. It has an 8x6 workspace [which is much larger than most tablets on the market] and has a wireless [and battery-less] stylus, which is also different from many models. I think both these things make this model feel more natural to draw on, especially if you've never used a tablet before.
So really, the advantage of having a tablet is that you can draw digitally and be as precise as you are with a pencil. The tablet allows for pressure sensitivity, whereas a mouse does not [not to discredit the mice, haha. I drew with a mouse for years]. Tablets however, do not increase one's ability to create art as seems to be their rouse. The brand of tablet is not a horribly huge deal either. Folks like to parade the name 'WACOM' six ways to Sunday, but I'll tell you what, my Hanvon has been nothing but spectacular to me, and it was MUCH more affordable. My brother got mine for me at only $80! I think now they run something like $104, but that's still a fantastically affordable price as far as tablets go, and for such a great one at that! I highly recommend it.
Using a tablet for the first time can be weird and, for some people, hard to get used to. You just have to practice with it and get to understand how it works and how you work with it. I hope this kinda explained them better for you. I know I didn't know much of anything about them when I got mine. It helps to have a rough idea. : D
Take care!

This is alot better than how kraid is potrayed in the games. In the games he looks too soft, and almost like a fat-cuddley thing. This gives him that sinister, kill-you-in-the-face kinda look. I love it and you sir, deserve a medal.
(Are the things he launches from his chest waste? Seriously wtf?)

ravenshield In reply to shedra [2007-12-13 02:48:05 +0000 UTC]
Lol, waste? Not sure which is stranger - alien by-product being launched at you, or mysterious blocks of fleshy spikes and disembodied toes. Either way, it's all shooting out of his stomach and becoming a weapon...god I love that game. X D
And thank you. While I still like the original versions of these monsters, I always wanted to draw them as they appeared in my head; and they always seemed to look more terrifying in there, where I can't just turn them off. >_>

You really know how to bring the ugly side out of every boss.
You've put emphasis on his emence girth, but you did it in such a manner as to make him appear to be carved out of stone.
I hope to see more metroid in the future.

I love monsters, and the bosses in Metroid games are some of my favorite. Kraid was really fun becuase he reminds me so much of the Japanese monsters in Godzilla movies and the like; and I'm a big Godzilla fan. X D
Glad you like him! He always scared me the most when I was young becuase of how big he was, so I decided that when I drew him here, I wanted him to look completely massive, just as he is. : D

I to love Gojira.
The boss that scared me the most was Ridley; for the mere fact that he had those two personal bodygaurds, as well as for his in close fighting style.
I went ballistic the first time I fought him; he was the first boss to my knowelege who was able to actually grab me and throw me - He fought like a monster; yet he was far to intellegent, which is a frightening thought.
I learn something new every day about the people I type to. Thank you.

Oh. My. Dear. Lord. Yes. Yes! YES! This is the best drawing of Kraid I have yet to see! It's an insta-fave in my opinion! You best be working on a picture like this of Crocomire. I remember, way back when, When I first had the game. I actually found Super Metroid in a Super Nintendo in the woods. Gameing wasn't a pass time, but a holy crusade for me apparently, XD. ANYWHO, I brought it in, hooked it up, and started too play. It was right at the save station before Crocomire. I end up beating him, and as a 6 year old child, I see this lizards skin just melt off his body. Scared the crap out of me. I went back thinking "That should be enough of the scarey stuff..." But then, it wouldn't let me out. Instead, the skeleton of Crocomire just pops out of the wall and scares the crap out of me again. It's still my all time favorite game ever. Now, DRAW CROCOMIRE!

Actually, I did start on an image like this for Chroco. X D He's always been my favorite Metroid enemy too! The scene after defeating him is basically burned into my memory, lol. I mean...as if the the drowning in the lava with his skin melting off, thing, wasn't enough, it just continues and when it gets all quiet, and you see those air bubbles coming up...oh man...that was so terrifying. X D
Crazy story though! I mean, how you found the NES w/ Super Metroid in it, just sitting in the woods. o . o It was truely mean't to be. Anyways, thanks for the nice words and the +fav.! Soons' I finish some work on a bit of a team project, I'll get that Croco image done. : D

X D lol. Yup! I remember when I first saw him and I'm like "Oh wow, this guy is HUGE!" and then he came completely out of the ground and I just went " .____. ", and paniced for about 12 minutes before deciding that it might be time to try SHOOTING at him. X D

I never got that far in Super Metroid (or normal Metroid, for that matter) so I've never seen him before. So I'm sure everyone else said this all those years ago, but I'm saying it now.
'Holy Crap!!!!'

Haha, yup. When you first come across him, he's half burried in the ground, like he is in this picture. After you've been fighting him for a while, he pulls himself all the way up, and he's about 2 times the size, in total height, that he is here. Definatly a "Holy Crap." moment, yes. X D

Wow does this bring back memories! Every time I think about this game, I remember that I sold my SNES, and weep XD
Seriously, Super Metroid was such an awesome game! I spent just as much time playing that as I did playing Final Fantasy 7. At first I hated it because I couldn't figure out a damned thing in the game...but once I started thinking outside the box and playing it, it was one of the most fun gaming experiences I've ever had...and even now I still want to play it
Great homage to one of the most frightening battles in the game...first encounter with a major boss...who seemed impenetrable in the beginning...even after figuring out it's tricks, it was still a long battle for me...and then after that, reward: VIRA SUIT FTW! ^_^
