Yes, it's veneer and to get it to bend, I boil water and soak the wood till I can flex it around the area I need to cover. The type of wood matters too. Some wood I used just don't want to take the shape I need.

Thanks so much for the reply. Ah! Boiling water. I tried cold water and it wasn't working. I'll try hot water and see if I have any luck. Not that I'm creating anything as marvellous as you are of course.
Let me guess... is it oak?! Oak doesn't like being anything other than itself! It doesn't like being manipulated in any way!!!

Oak is a pain but I can get it to bend with the grain. Most of the wood I used was .025 thick on the projects I make.

Thank you. I would love to do a full size carousel horse but I would never want to get rid of it.

Handsome sculpture. Β I look forward to seeing the steampunk version, too! Β Are some of those pieces laser cut (like the scales)? Β

rcdog In reply to VibrantIce [2013-08-13 00:55:18 +0000 UTC]
Yes, the wood is to thin to cut with a scroll saw. I cut the pattern Β larger and sand them to fit.Β

Awesome. Β Thank you for the response. Β I want to play with a laser cutter (or scroll saw for that matter). Β Wood is just not a medium I've worked with much yet. Β Work like yours makes my mental gears turn.

I choose this type of woodworking because it make me think 2 or 3 steps ahead. It's the ideas of (what to make) and then (how to make) that sometimes drives me nuts.

You have major skills and a project like this is going to come out amazing. That fact that your layering such well crafted pieces together like that, its going to look perfect ^^ and a well made stand like that matches it superbly

From some one who's skills and art crosses different media, it's nice to hear how you like the way it turned out. This one turned out to be a good test with very little re-do.
