Description
This dragon is about 7inches tall. Made from sapele, maple, walnut, and blood wood. I lost count on how many pieces are in it because of the scales. The back and front scales were boiled in water and formed to the piece.Related content

I added the time it took me to make the parts out of paper and cardboard as well. I needed them as a template to make this little guy.

Thanks, I really want to get better at this form of wood working so I can make these for any one. Many of the people on DA help with there comments which is great because I can't find anyone local to ask (how to) with this type of art.

Beautiful work! How many hours would you say you have in the dragon?

Thank you. It took about 840 hours because I made it out of paper to get the shapes before cutting the wood.

Thank you. Everyone seems to like my dragon and I'm afraid to try outdoing it, but I know I have to give it a shot. I have 2 more side projects to do and I'll get started on the next dragon.

did you take pictures of the process or just the finished product?

rcdog In reply to jasonclaude [2011-09-14 21:45:42 +0000 UTC]
The dragon was made a different way than my other projects and I didn't think it would work out like it did. So I didn't take any pics of the process. After I finish the next 2 things I'm working on I want to go back and build a water dragon ( but a full body one). I hope it turns out close to this one and I hope to have pics during the process.

Amazing piece, . Question though, what does boiling the wood do?
π: 0 β©: 1
rcdog In reply to Rychee [2011-08-28 00:31:56 +0000 UTC]
When you take a piece of thin wood ( my were .024in.) and dip them in hot water they can be bent around small objects with out snapping. The back scales were bent around a 1 in. dia. bottle and left to dry. The head and belly were done the same.

Thank you, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out when I started it. I wish could sell it but the first one is the prototype and I use it to help me make the others better. ( like I did with Spike)
