Description
A detail shot of the chocolate plate.____________________________________
The idea for this installation came about through a humorous chat about casting food. I turned it into reality because the humor of eating body parts cast from food was an idea I couldn’t pass up. I partnered up with a friend because I knew this project would take a lot of time that I didn’t have. We decided to do bit-size body parts instead of casting large chunks of bodies so the audience could feel every texture with their tongue. Fingers, nose, and ears became our form, and cheese, chocolate and rice became our medium. As we were making each piece of food, we became slightly disgusted with the amount of detail in the food. That was a very desired effect. The body parts we chose are very innocent, but physically eating a body part – feeling it’s shape in your mouth as you bite into it – is a very uncomfortable experience. That was the inspiration for our display. We chose to present our food as a normal party table, using very typical plastic partyware. From far away, the table looks very innocent. However, a little closer and you start seeing odd shapes. In reaching distance you realize what forms the food has taken. I like to think of this setup as our own little twisted suburban neighborhood party, where some people may not want to come back, and others may want more. Getting to see viewer’s reaction to our work was very rewarding. Many chuckled, but were timid to try a bite. Others couldn’t wait to dig in. Overall, everybody seemed to find the humor in our installation whether they partook or not, which was our goal.

GAH! There is certainly a great deal of detail in those castings. What were the molds made of?

We used a food safe rubber mold. It was a very timely and annoying process lol.

I bet! We did mold making and casting this semester, and it was a very very long process. Messy, too.

Oh gross but ... fascinating. On first glance, I thought it was either sausages or pumpernickel bread cast like sausages.. and then I remembered your theme from the first uploaded shot. *lol*

Yeah, we got the best detail with the chocolate. The first one we pulled out was very exciting since we did chocolate last.
