Description
Detail shot . There is a lot going on here that this photo is not capturing. The idea behind this piece was to combine several structures, textures, and colors which are shared among non-related specimens in the natural world. The following was an inspiration in creating this form.
Coral
Honeysuckle Leaf
Eye Iris
Human Thigh Cross-section
Sand Dollar
Petunia Blossom
There are around 15 different batches of clay here, each with different colorants. I also used a low fire clay body (talc body) and a cone 6 clay body, firing it to cone 6. The low fire clay fluxed out enough for this piece to slump, making it now flat, and causing it to crack apart; a happy accident I was welcoming.
This piece looks very different from what I was expecting. It was supposed to be various shades of green with other colors sprinkled throughout. I am, however, happy with the result of this piece. Looking like a fossil I think has further confused our familiarity with the inspirations.

Technical Information
~ 18" x 24"
~ ^6 Oxidation
~ ^6 stoneware and ^04 talc body
~ Array of oxides used for colorants in the clay bodies
~ Millefiori was used to make this piece. 20 pie shaped sections were cut from a single cane, then stretched and combined to make this form.
~ Dough was rolled into the millefiori cane in order to leave hairline cracks throughout the piece.

I these look sharp. I wonder what an atmospheric firing would do to it? I have a friend that fired books covered in slip in a soda firing and once fires the object then cuts them into slivers in a wet/dry saw. I am excited about your experimentation lately. I would love to see how it all comes together.

I can only sit agog at work of this scale of meticulous construction. I really need my own ceramic studio... Very impressive and such a rich capture of natural textures; wood, fungus, sponge... I think there's a wasp hive in there somwhere Lovely delicate work!

Really beautiful textures. At first I thought it was a piece of wood.

cone 6 really?!?! woooooooow. <3 cone 6. This is amazing work!!! I wish the place I'm at now wasn't so crowded to try to make intricate/delicate things like this. It's a pretty shabby studio... but I keep getting told its the best one in the area.... oh well.
I really wish I could see this in person. I love how it looks like other materials and could be mistake for a fossil, or petrified wood, adding a sense of time to it. Almost armor like. AMAZING!!!!
yay <3

I'd hardly say I found a place to work... I found a place to be a transient... for the time being....
Community college is hardly a place to harness dreams, realities, and creative energy. Community college is an outlet to help the young get through the system and the old to develop a hobby. In between people like me come and funnel through and forget what art, and the creation process of art is. And because the place is jammed packed with a bunch of people that don't care how long you've spent on a piece, their going to pick it up and break whatever they damn well please! I miss my old personal studio where I could make giant signs that say "I will cut off your fingers if you touch or take my things!" even if I had no clue who they were! So yea.... not really a creative place to be lol

Thank you for the kind words! I see what you're saying about the fabrics and feathers, I'll have to keep that in the front of my mind for my next pieces

Do you have any pics of the millefiori cane pre and post cutting? before they were stretched and assembled? My brain is currently unable to picture it..
GORGEOUS work....truly. I am in love with it!

Yeah, I was thinking of posting some in progress shots, but I didn't take any of them after being stretched. I do have a pre and post cutting, so I think I'll go ahead and post them, since you asked
Thanks for the wonderful comment!

Oh I'm so jealous! I miss teaching so much, especially the middle-aged ladies.
I plan on making more, finally I feel like I've found something I can really get into for a while.
