Description
Balondemu sighed as he waited out in the middle of the Out Lands for Zira to come, cradling his newborn son in his arms. He glanced down at the boy, whom he had named "Kovu" -"scar"- in his deceased mate's honor. Kovu was making cute baby noises in his arms and looking up at him with unfocused dark green eyes. Balondemu spared the boy a small smile, but soon his frown return as he went back to looking out over the horizon.

Just hours ago Ngina had given birth to Kovu while the two had been walking. It had been sudden and unexpected. They weren't expecting the cub to come for another week or so. But while the infant was born perfectly fine, Ngina herself unfortunately didn't make it, and neither did the innfant's sister, who died shortly after birth. For whatever reason Ngina didn't stop bleeding after she gave birth to their cubs, and Balondemu could only watch as she bled to death in front of him. While Balondemu didn't love Ngina, she was the mother of his son, and he'd grown to see her as one of the only friends he had left in this world. Thus he grieved for her when she passed.

Balondemu kept his eyes peeled off into the distance, watching for any signs of Zira and the others. Arafa and Arifa, Zira's self-appointed majordomos, had been near by when Ngina began to give birth, so they went off to grab Zira. Balondemu suspected that Zira had sent the two to keep an eye on them, but he didn't say anything. Zira has always been keeping an eye on him ever since they've been exiled to the Out Lands, due to her hatred of him.

Speaking of the striped lioness, Balondemu soon spotted her off on the horizon, trotting over to him with Arafa and Arifa on either side of her. Balondemu stiffened ever so slightly, but otherwise stayed put as Zira came to stand in front of him. The two lions' eyes met, neither showing any sort of emotion.

"Balondemu." Zira greeted curtly.

"Zira." the former bodyguard replied stiffly. He didn't trust the crazed lioness one bit, however she was Scar's other mate, not to mention the mother of his son's betrothed, Vitani. As much as he hated it, he knew he'd have to deal with her for the rest of his (or her) life. Anyways, Kovu was now without a mother, and Zira would most likely be the lioness to take that place in his life as his future mother-in-law.

"So, the cub. Is it a boy?" Zira asked, looking down at the dark brown lion cub in Balondemu's arms.

"Yes Zira, he's male," Balondemu answered gruffly, "just as Scar hoped he'd be. I've named in Kovu in his honor."

"Excellent!" Zira hissed, her red eyes lighting up with excitement. A wicked grin made it's way onto her face. "Everything is going just as our beloved King Scar planned! Oh, look at him, Balondemu! He even looks like a son of Scar! You and Ngina did an excellent job. I'm sure Scar would be pleased with you if he were here. Speaking of Ngina, where is she?"

Balondemu didn't answer. He simply glanced to his right. Zira followed his gaze and saw the body of the lioness and the other infant, which were already beginning to become covered in a sheet of flies. Overhead vultures flew around in a circle, waiting for the living lions to leave so they could eat their dead meal.

"Ah. I see. What a shame. Oh well. She wasn't a very useful lioness, anyways." Zira snorted. Balondemu let out a furious roar at this, leaping to his feet. The small infant he was holding let out a squeak of surprise as he tumbled to the dusty ground. Before Zira or her majordomos could react, Balondemu had the striped lioness pinned. Zira's eyes were wide with shock as Balondemu got into her face, teeth bared and dark green eyes narrowed into slits.

"DON'T YOU DARE CALL NGINA USELESS, YOU HEARTLESS BITCH!!!" Balondemu roared. "She's done more for any of us than anyone else has in this pathetic pride! While you go off working these poor lionesses to death, she's been acting like a real mother to your cubs! She hunted to provide for the pride, well beyond when she should have stopped for the safety of herself and the cub! She gave encouragement to those of us who had lost all hope of survival! She's given this pride hope! She's given this pride something worth fighting for! She's given up her life to bring Scar's heir -my son- into the world! And what have you done? In all this time, your "greatest accomplishment" was the murder of three innocent cubs, two of which were the sons of Simba! You blame Simba for Scar's death, calling him a murderer, yet you yourself are no better! In fact, if anything, you're WORSE! So don't you DARE call Ngina useless! She was a true leader! You're nothing but a FAKE!" Panting, Balondemu let Zira up, who at this point was stunned into silence. Balondemu then picked up Kovu, who had begun crying from all the yelling. "I will let you around Kovu, but only because our children are to marry in the future. But heed this warning, Zira: If you EVER treat my son like you do your own cubs, you will wish you had died with Scar on that day Simba returned."

With that, Balondemu took Kovu back to the safety of the pride to find Kovu a wet nurse, leaving Zira standing there in silence with Arafa and Arifa by her side.
